Good info. Keep in mind that the 4% rule is mentioned because of the impact of inflation. In other words, 4% withdrawal + 2% inflation could be considered as equivalent of withdrawing 6% from portfolio. But, of course, it all depends on how portfolio is structured, and if (as you mentioned) if companies that pay dividends continue to raise their payouts each year (like Manulife, CNR, CU, BCE, ENB, etc.). I personally plan on withdrawing 5% (when I reach 2M) in next year or two.

If you're young and just starting out (and don't need your savings to live on) it can be a good idea to start investing in solid dividend stocks now, but with the dividends going into a dividend reinvestment plan (if available) instead of coming to you as cash. To maintain the purchasing power of your income stream you would definitely need a level of regular dividend increases to combat the natural erosion of your income due to inflation over the years. The ultimate calculation of how much money you will need from passive income will be determined by all available income sources ( government pensions, private pensions, RRSP’s, TFSA’s, other savings and investments ) vrs. what your lifestyle costs are. It’s pretty simple as long as you can balance your income and expenditures. One last piece of advice after many decades is always spend a little less than you can afford and you will always have enough.

I have records for my ownership of ManuLife stock since 2005. The stock split in 2006. The peak I have for the stock (weekly basis) was at the beginning of Nov. 2007 of $42.98. At the turnaround following the 2008 market crash, the value March of 2009 was $9.65. Since then or during a 13 year period, the stock has risen to last Friday at $26.97. Dividends for many years were very static with small increases in some years but this year did have a first quarter increase over the past few years. Still waiting for the value to go up to its peak of 2007. I keep the stock simply to see what getting the stock for no cost because my insurance policy was there when the company changed from a mutual company to a stock company much like most insurance companies in Canada did. The income generated basically now covers the cost of the premium on an annual premium basis. BTW- if you have $2.5 million, likely a better purchase instead of stocks would be a house or maybe two in Vancouver or Toronto areas and rent them out and live on the income and be happy with the increase of value. Most folks don't have the 2.5 million. Still can't beat the old tried and true method of increasing your nest egg of either saving more or spending less. Get rid of debt early in life and then let the power of compound interest help the journey. Learn the rule of 72. Retire early and enjoy life because life will get more difficult the longer you live and you won't be able to do what you could when younger. Time is something no one gets back for savings nor for living.

But, if I have invested in aristocratic or king dividend paying stock companies where I am already getting dividend pay outs like say 15 to 20000, perhaps that 4 % rule would not apply, in which case I may not need to invest a million. What would your formula be?

Another great video Brandon :) I think it's also important to mention the Dividend Reinvestment plans (DRIP) and how taking those dividends and reinvesting them automatically into the company can help grow that number of stocks even faster. It's amazing to see companies increasing their dividend each year, and in your example you were assuming the amount of stocks you owned stayed at 100,000 year to year, but 100,000 sticks x 0.27 (per quarter) = 27,250 stocks per quarter. Then the next quarter it would be 127,250 x 0.27, and so on.... Obviously these are crazy numbers to work with, like you said I hope no one puts 2.5 mill into one company, but still, the power of compound interest and having a DRIP can be huge. Let me know what you think, I know in previous videos you mentioned you don't use a DRIP for most of your investments. But as a dividend investment, a DRIP can really help compound the amount of stocks over time.
@lucky2473653 жыл бұрын
For anyone that is stressing about 2.5 million, don't forget that your portfolio may not be your only source of income. You will get CPP, OAS will likely be clawed back significantly if your income is 100k, and you may get additional income from your company pension plan. So you must take all of these considerations into play when determining how to plan your retirement income.
