In 2022, Ontario saw at least 49,000 people leave the province with many relocating to Alberta. With a cheaper rental market, more affordable homes, lower taxes and decent gas prices, Alberta’s campaign to get more Torontonians to relocate seems to be working. Let us know, what would it take to make Toronto liveable again?

No one should be paying more than 30% of their monthly wages in rent. If this was the case it would also ease the strikes for more pay. People need to live not work 24/7 to still be behind.

I moved from Toronto to Calgary and lived there for 6 years before returning back to Toronto. I seriously regret it. I had a good paying job and rented a beautiful fully furnished condo in the downtown core with washer/dryer, smart home connected Google, and fireplace. I paid $1500 monthly with parking and utilities included. I was earning 6k a month and I was able to save 3k out of it. The weather is decent in Calgary, but social life sucks! As a person of colour, I would say, classism is a bigger issue than racism. Calgarians are more reserved and conservative. Most live an active lifestyle by eating healthy and exercise frequently, it's the norm there. I felt home sick and missed out on dating life. Since the collapse of oil an gas, there has been a shortage of single men. Women of all races are struggling with this issue. Lucky for me, I found my now husband in Toronto and I convinced him to move with me back to Calgary. I am truly looking forward to transitioning next year. Best of luck to you all.

Im from Calgary and what I have noticed is alot of people are moving to Calgary and then moving up to Edmonton for more stable options (which does explain why Edmontons higher growth rate). You missed out a political portion where Edmonton votes more progressively, and the rest of the province is generally conservative which people also consider when moving here. My nephew lives in Edmonton and has created a good life for himself in the trades. I hear the film industry is getting a kick-start in Alberta as well, which is great! What's upsetting about Toronto and Ontario, in general, is that the economy improved during lockdown because a lot of people (noted that not everyone got it, and some had trouble getting it as self-employed individuals, which is a whole other can of worms!) had money coming in with CERB. A lot of people like myself who are older got laid off and were forced to work in the gig economy. I had a cushion for basics like food and shelter. If there was a universal basic income put into place, rent control reinstated, and the focus was not put just on home ownership, I think people would consider staying. Now, if they could only improve the TTC...LOL🙃

Rural Alberta is indeed very Conservative. But would respectfully suggest that the big cities (most notably Edmonton and to a lesser extent Calgary) are more Liberal/Left wing than much of the RoC. As a fellow Torontonian who left in 2015, nothing will make the city "affordable." Prices skyrocketed in the early aughts, even during the 2008 recession prices were climbing. There's never going to be a bubble that bursts in the housing market. Toronto has too much bureaucratic rot, high expenses, high taxes and has been mismanaged for decades. This rot has been creeping to neighboring GTA cities, which only continues to raise the cost of living. Ontario is a giant red flag. Get out while you can. Head to Saskatchewan or Alberta. Quebec is great if you're bilingual. And Winnipeg is a goldmine if you can stomach their winters.

PS: Opinion is coming from someone who lived in Toronto for several years studied university in the Niagara region for 4 years...moved to Grande Prairie Alberta for 3 years afterwards lived in Calgary for 3 years moved back to Toronto (due to having to deal with too much systemic racism on a daily basis in Alberta and expecting a second baby wanting to be closer to immediate family and was offered a "better job opportunity" which was definitely a scam in the end) and leaving Toronto 3 years later to come back to Calgary. The lockdowns will have destroyed many people for homelessness because of drugs, specifically meth and opiates(which was a huge cover up from big pharma, which was the main reason we have this problem.) Some times you need to accept the fact especially on a governmental level, that life is an individuals game and there will always be people who make bad decisions no matter what, the best you can do for them is provide em a bed and let the local community through its churches and other local charities help them. For the most part the homeless of calgary have this and enough public areas to stay warm in the winter. It certainly is a problem and I really do hope they manage to turn theirs lives around. But in your form of caring usually just kills them sooner. It enables them to constantly live on the edge, and that will one day sooner push them to their physical limits, and potential life long drug induced injuries, from which point there become even less hope for their lives. I want to remind you that homeless have usually burned bridges with family to have gotten to actual homelessness. Or just don't have one, and if that's the case then, getting clean for life is a really important step, and quite frankly in your bid to save a few, liberals usually end up dooming the many, but never themselves until it's to late, and you end up with huge crime waves and problems like California...

Housing is a human right and especially in a country with an extremely cold climate this is critical. We have politicians that allowed developers to turn the city's housing into a business of commerce and very rarely does one get the quality housing that equates the cost. This is what happens when you have failed leadership that does not have mechanisms in place to support a variety of people to generate income based on their gifts, talent and skills. We also have a brilliant young man who built tiny homes as a solution for the homless and to give those unhoused dignity. The mayor and the other leaders at city hall dragged him through the legal system. This is not strength or real power when you are in a position to crush someone who does not have the resources to fight you and you do. This is a act of great human weakness.

A friend of mine is in Edmonton for job training and it's my experiment to see if things are too good to be true. Crossing my fingers that Alberta is a viable option.

Born and raised in Vancouver/ Vancouver Island, and moved to Calgary 10 years ago, I think once you leave your liberal echo chamber you will find the reasons why so many vote conservative out West( I know I did). We are not a bunch of uneducated racist red necks ( we voted for the first muslim mayor in a major North American city and currently have minority mayors in both Calgary and Edmonton. I have a good paying job with low taxes and an affordable mortgage on a 2300sf house to raise my family. I get to work with wonderful people from around the world, Pakistan, India, Yemen and China to name a few. multiculturalism is alive and well here. Come out this way and see for yourselves.

Until Toronto realizes that is merely a PART of Canada instead of ALL of Canada nothing will change. I have lived in other countries and couldn't believe that many in those countries think Toronto IS the Country! Sure Toronto is BIG, but it is a far cry from the best. I live in a "loser" province that has seemingly stagnated, but, even so, we who live here sure as hell wouldn't move to Toronto. I mean christ! They won't even support their CFL team (which blows NFL crap away) I think Toronto is slowly becoming an embarrassmet. Yous are no better than the rest of your fellow Canadians, so quit looking down on the rest of the country. \m/

All your suggestions for your city are more intrusive government interventions: rent control, regulated wages, more gov infrastructure. Meanwhile, people across North America are visibly fleeing "big government" zones, from Toronto to California. Read the tea leaves, pal! Government isn't your friend.

You lost me at Alberta. Alberta keeps shooting their future selves in the foot by keeping taxes too low and then when the price of oil goes down, their economy bottoms out, and they wonder why.
@Gillz34

thats not true lower taxes is one of the reasons ppl move there instead of sask, Manitoba and the maritimes. Alberta also has the most millionaires in Canada
@highdough2712

@@Gillz34 People moving there because of lower taxes doesn’t change the fact that the low taxes screws the province whenever the price of oil goes down. As for Alberta having the most millionaires, first off that’s not true, secondly, who cares if half your provinces becomes unemployed the moment oil dips below a certain price.

What an idiotic person. We need taxes to be prosperous? That makes zero sense. We are prosperous despite high taxes. We got low taxes and attract lots of business from high tax zones.

Stop calling yourself ‘People of Colour’ and expect to be treated differently. That’s another form of discrimination and racism that only backfires on you. If you want to be treated equally, get rid of the victim’s mindset.
