I bought the reMarkable 2 and the Supernote AX5 because I couldn’t decide which I would like better. So, after a year of using both I have to say that I love the reMarkable 2. It’s simple, uncomplicated, easy to navigate with a writing surface that feels just like paper. The Supernote, not so much. While it has a lot features, so does my iPad. I wanted something to just replace all my sticky notes and one place to keep my daily journal, plus my sketches. The reMarkable is a winner at sketching. I don’t care about color as my iPad has that in spades, so if that’s the only reason for an upgrade count me out. I do use the Supernote in my music room and have dedicated it to keeping notes and information strictly involving music. That’s my take on it. I’m sure a lot of people would love the Supernote and would find the reMarkable 2 to be restrictive, but that’s what I love about.

The thing I love about the Remarkable is that it really feels like an extension of my laptop rather than being a separate device. The chrome extension and desktop app sync almost instantly. I've had so many devices that's sync function was unreliable. The Remarkable is so reliable that it's quicker and better than printing a document. I've now side loaded my ebooks to it and I am using it as my primary reading device. I love that I can actually annotate the books rather than just writing on little post it notes. (I also own the Scribe). I know others rave about the Boox devices but I've owned many Android tablets and the number of apps that let you use a stylus and are designed for a large screen are minimal. The only major complaint I have against the remarkable is that you can't search for handwriting. We're paying for a cloud subscription, and this should be included in the price.

"Who should buy" 100%. Nailed it. You are exactly who they designed this for. Comparing it to paper is the *only* comparison that makes sense. It was the design center, according to their pre-success papers. Then again, you are a designer, so you know all about that

Brandon, great video. Totally agree..I spent a year with the A5X and even purchased the A6X2. I love the Supernote and still do. But it was missing two things for me. Better synchronization and no color pens or highlights. I still have them but will probably sell the A6X2. I then tried the Boox Air 3c and found it was taking a lot of steps to do a few simple things I needed to do while writing, plus I could never get the Kindle App on mine to work. Yes it has the color pens and highlights but there were just too many distractions for me to concentrate on writing. I have a phone and android tablet for all that. I sent the Boox back. Then I heard the remarkable had color pens and highlights and I remember watching a bunch of your discussions on the remarkable. I just ordered it and received it a couple of weeks ago and I have found my sweet spot of a tablet. You are correct when you discuss use case. That's what everyone has to decide. Sorry for the long post, but bottom line my use case is that I teach, and for me to teach it helps me to write in different colors and highlights, plus it helps to move my writing around because while writing thoughts don't always come in the perfect sequence. So when I have everything the way I like it, I preview it on my computer, (which is almost instantaneous and in color) and if everything is the way I like it, I then print it out in color and teach from paper. After I teach, I throw the paper away but I always have a copy on my remarkable. The only thing that might make me change would be if they come out with the bigger color version of remarkable, then I wouldn't need to print to paper. Thanks for all you do on this channel.

I absolutely love my RM2. It’s exactly what you say. A great replacement for my paper journals. I use it everyday at work. I love the tactile feeling of writing and it sits next to my keyboard while I work. I grab it for all my meetings and just share my notes when done. I wavered about the price, but after buying it I would get another if I accidentally broke it. The google drive integration ticked the final box for me and ease of importing docs to sign and email.

I was surprised to find that of all the options, I ultimately selected the Remarkable in 2024. Polished cloud support, EU privacy, honoring the GPL, and substantial likelihood of long-term support were all major deciding factors. Happy with it so far, though viable Google Docs collaboration and at-rest encryption would take the Remarkable to another level for professional work.

@@BrandonKBoswell I feel like the Drive integration is okay, but I can't comment/annotate Google Docs without first exporting them from Docs, so the comments aren't visible to co-workers. Encrypted storage feels like something reMarkable could more readily address. Today, it is my impression that a lost device could lead to the leaking of confidential documents stored on the device.

I recently got an RM2, after having the RM1 since they released in 2017. I'm still not convinced that I needed the upgrade: even the RM1 holds up quite well, although the support for a pen with an eraser is pretty neat. All round it's a great device, and I love it for taking notes, reading books, and in particular articles/papers where I want to annotate / highlight stuff. Also, worthy of note: it gets a lot of approving 'oohs' and 'aahs' in meeting rooms and at conferences. People tell me that I look more engaged and present than people taking notes on a laptop, who are "hidden" behind the folded up screen and could be anywhere between fully present and just zoned out and into whatever they're doing on their laptop instead. I wouldn't buy it just because it makes you look professional, but it certainly does help. Screen-sharing to a Teams meeting to show notes and draft things is also very nice.

I have been using the Remarkable 2 for years. I do not recommend it for 2024; it is outdated for current needs. Yes, it is a note-taking device, but it is necessary to add color to the notes, and RM2 does not allow this. The RM2 software is easy to use, yes, but it is so simple that many necessary options are missing, and the software does not implement them. Also, it must be mentioned that to have certain document storage functionalities on the company's servers, a monthly subscription is necessary. How? Yes, if you do not pay every month, all your documents that you have not used in the last 50 days will be deleted from the cloud. The best thing about the RM2 is the writing feel, which is very good, but the very basic software, the lack of color, and the need to subscribe for certain functionalities, make it an outdated device.

Yes, and actually the thing that keeps me from buying any of them is that I don't think the technology is there yet in general. Now for people who write all the time and journal and basically organize their whole life writing I can see this being a game changer and worth it now or later. For someone like me who wants to use it for some very specific note taking and that's it, as well as being super picky with responsiveness, resolution, and seamless features, I think I'll keep waiting. I want to not be able to notice I'm using e-ink instead of a sheet of paper, as well as full synchronization with google docs (without downloading), a screen the size of an A4 sheet of paper, and snappy streamlined responsiveness to taking notes, organizing them, and finding them. I have a strong feeling I will be disappointed still in various ways. Maybe the remarkable 3 will do it, maybe not. We'll see.

I've been using a remarkable 2 for a year and a half for university, and it's almost perfect. I bought the keyboard case 3 months ago and it's even better than before. However, I find they're too slow to update the tablet, the last few updates were pretty useless to be honest (today's beta update which makes files prettier for example is the last thing I wanted to have as an update....). I've been asking the development team for months to add circles, which are absolutely essential for students like me. I've been asking for months to be able to change PDF note page templates which would take maximum 10 minutes to code for them, move pages in imported PDFs, copy and paste images (I know it can be difficult to code, but it can be done). Also, adding a green pen isn't unfeasible, and would be really cool. However, I really don't think they care what their users think in the long run. I'm pretty disappointed in them for that.

Brandon - for me the big attraction is if I can write and write and write in my handwriting on a ReMarkable 2 and then after the meeting press a button and what I have written magically turns into type written text that I can then convert into a wordprocessed document or a PowerPoint-type document. Such a feature, if quick and accurate, would be 100% ideal for me. I am told the ReMarkable 2 has a feature that allows the user to convert their handwriting into typed text, but I have never seen a review or a video that shows me this feature being used. Is this because it is not a very good feature? Is it because it is very inaccurate? Or it is a paid extra? Or it is not possible to do this?

Does the left side bar interfere with writting? I see you don't ever show a cover. Do you use/need a cover? Does it change the left handed user experience? Cheers!

what would be the best device to review and markup pdf / word A4 legal documents? Contracts, essentially. Has to sync with some cloud. that would be to avoid printing. Kudos if i can use it to read ebooks too. I have a kindle paperwhite w 300p resolution and i ve used lower resolution ones, i think the difference is stark, so i really question the remarkable and its low resolution. I'd need crisp text where i can see 1 A4 page in one go.

the struggle I have is recollection and search. I think the Remarkable 2 still doesn’t allow for easy search of handwritten notes? Does it allow for search on the mobile app or desktop app (is there a desktop app/web app?) - if so that may be good enough, using the tablet mainly for the immediate notes.
@bgosl
@bgosl 3 ай бұрын
Anything that's handwritten and has stayed handwritten - i.e., you haven't converted to text - isn't searchable, no. You'd have to convert it all to text to be able to search, or potentially make headers with typed text to let you search through those (you still wouldn't be able to search the text body, though).

I looked at it, and was utterly repulsed by the "connect" garbage. You are basically buying a EUR 350 device that's utterly crippled if you don't pay another EUR 36/year. OK, that's not a lot of money, but I utterly despise the whole "subscription for a device you own" nonsense, and refuse to support any company that uses it, because the world will be a better place when each and every one of them goes out of business.

The thing that draws me to the Remarkable is the fact that it isn’t a “general purpose OS” like the Onyx Boox. Im torn between the Remarkable and one of the 11 inch Kobo tablets so that I am not tethered to the Amazon world. Which would you recommend? Now for entertainment purposes I really really really want a Palma as a “phone replacement.”

If color is critical, the RM won't work. If it isn't, it's a great device for reading PDFs. I use mine for that a lot, plowing through articles/PDFs/books. I love being able to annotate with notes in the margin, or just highlight stuff that's worth highlighting.

Im looking for smth to display music sheets. We recently switched to tablets and in the sun you cant see anything. It has to be able to send/recieve files to/from other android tablets and my windows pc and have bluetooth. A color display would be a nice extra for marking stuff in the notes but not necessary. Also a backmight would be good because we also play at night sometimes wich might be problematic without one. It needs to be about A4 sized altho a little bit smaller isnt bad. Just not _too_ small to read A4 sheets. Wich one do you think would be good?

226ppi is far too low for 2024. Its an obvious wait for the RM3. With the ad blitz remarkable are firing out right now, its a blatant final push for sales before the hype of the next model cycle begins. Not seen so many remarkable ads on social media since the release. Even if the new model will be colour, upping the resolution on the b+W model at the same time is a simple enough upgrade that would make a huge difference.

This is a fantastic breakdown of the Remarkable use case. It’s a like having a digital Moleskin or my personal favorite Shinola notebook. My company provides me an awful Dell laptop. I don’t use it much. I use an M1 IPad Pro, 12.9 for most of what I do. The remarkable is for clarity of thought. When I’m brainstorming. I also it to take notes when I’m in person or using my iPad for Video Meetings. The remarkable is the perfect size and has the best writing experience. It’s a notepad. That’s what I like, but the hardware is outpaced by the software. I doubt I’ll upgrade however. It’s a notebook. I will however be upgrading to the M4 IPad 13in.
