@doktorfaustusАй бұрын
I received mine today too, also a day ahead of their initial delivery estimate. Some notes: • The screen is noticeably darker than monochrome eInk tablets, including rM2, though not perhaps as dark as a Kaleido 3. The frontlight is almost a must for reading in anything but optimal lighting conditions. • The screen size is a nice boon. Even though it is only an inch and a half larger diagonally, I have already noticed that large-format PDFs are easier to review. • Notepads that synced from my rM2 did not get expanded in text size. Rather, in cases in which I had filled a lined template page with handwriting, the Paper Pro showed the same writing, but the template extended a few blank lines further than the original. Handwriting and template lines all lined up. You may not have noticed on the quick example you examined, because the handwriting extended beyond the bottom of the original page (with the scrolling feature). In short, Paper Pro gives you a couple extra lines, but at roughly the same scale. One thing you may want to test for your viewers, which I will be testing myself, is how reMarkable handles syncing documents between multiple devices if you leave one open on e.g. your rM2 and then open the same notebook on PP. They sidestepped this issue when introducing the rM2 for users of the original reMarkable by only allowing one device to be logged into an account at a time. Now the Connect subscription permits 3 devices on the same account, so I wonder how it will juggle notebooks that might be open on multiple devices simultaneously.

Immediate Questions: 1. Handwriting to text and specifically: Math related handwritten equations to text feature (all the special symbols and recognition of that and exporting it into other documents); you as a physics teacher should know what I'm talking about and can hopefully elaborate. OneNote on Microsoft does it fairly well, but the Surface Pro lineup and their pens and palm rejection on OneNote is terrible for a $1500 device. 2. Left handedness features. Is the X still really easy to hit as a left hander to cancel out of apps? Did they actually change the UI to help lefties or are we left out in the dark (pun intended). Was everything rotated or switched over to the other side so there's literal equivalent for lefties? 3. General import/export of documents and changing of formats. Is there a third party app equivalent to ReadEra on the Android? 4. Touch UI and palm touch rejection. Do I need to write with my hand off the slab? I generally find that so uncomfortable. 5. Battery life with real world life usage. Thanks for your time and awesome reviews!

These tablets have low-speed processors, small storage, and limited RAM. They don't pay Google or Android for licenses, and they offer fewer apps. E-ink displays are cheaper than OLED. So what's driving up the $629 cost of these devices? Hardware-wise, they are 2x more expensive than an iPad.

I've had my Remarkable2 for a couple years and got it's type folio a little while ago. It works perfectly fine for my needs (writing my book/research notes/journal/a random sketch every now and then), and honestly see no need to get the Pro right now. It's basically just a bigger RM2 but with colour, and almost 2x the price. I love the RM2 size it fits perfectly in all my bags lol, if I got the Pro it probs wouldn't fit. I do like that it has back lighting as an option but most of the time I have a light source nearby anyway, though I could see myself using it. Maybe in the future if they roll out some updates and lower the price I'd go for it just because I love my RM2 and wouldn't mind a faster version. Hopefully by then they have some different colours for the type folio too 😁 Definitely appreciate the truly honest review!

Difficult one. If money was no object, I'd probably still go for the pro, because it's only flickering when in colour mode. So colour would be an occasional nice to have. But yeah, if you want to get a great tablet at half the price, there are plenty of options for black and white or colour.
@deltics735Ай бұрын
Thanks for the review; still waiting for mine to arrive (ordered on day of release). A long-time rM2 user I also have a BOOX Note Air3C - rM2 is my digital notebook, the Air3C is my eInk productivity tablet and kindle (Journal, ToDos etc). The Kaleido screen on the Air3C is a step-up from the Note 2+ I had previously, but it demands such a lot of front-light to be comfortable to use, even in a well lit room, that the battery life penalty is a really annoyance, especially given the idiotic placement of the USB-C port for charging (on the “spine”). I wasn’t expecting miracles with the Gallery screen, and I’m optimistic that the “flashing” will become background noise in much the same way that the “annoying ghosting” quickly did when first getting used to eInk in general. The screen otherwise looks phenomenal - the clarity, contrast and brightness/saturation and intensity of the colours all still look like a step-change from Kaleido. Also, I was a little worried when you mentioned “yellow burn-in” in a previous video and - having placed my order - my heart skipped a beat when you pointed out the “burn in” on your device in this video. It was a huge relief when I realised that the “burn in” you were talking about seems to be what most people call “ghosting” in relation to eInk displays, i.e. which clears on a full refresh. The lack of an on-demand refresh is no biggie for me. The Air3C has it and suffers quite badly from ghosting, but in the past year with that tablet I wouldn’t need to take my socks off to count the number of times I felt the need to manually refresh. :) My only concern w.r.t the active stylus is the battery life. The stylus on my rM2 is not only a great device in it’s own right, but also a fidget toy. Even when not taking notes I’ll be playing with the stylus while thinking or doing other work, and often will just leave it on the desk next to the tablet, rather than attached. Not a problem with an EMR stylus which doesn’t need charging, but I am concerned that with the active stylus I’ll need to be more diligent about replacing it to keep it charged ready for use (and the impact this will have on battery life of the tablet itself - that power doesn’t come from thin air after all!). Overall I’m still excited, though perhaps with better calibrated expectations now, courtesy of this overview. Thanks!

Yeah, the USI ones I tried did not work as well as the rM marker though, so I think to their credit they have done some tweaking of the standard. (Or maybe just made it so only their own works as it is supposed to, because those pens work well on the pixel tablet for example.)

@JaredWynsАй бұрын
I'd be curious to see layer performance & how much it can really handle. One issue on my Remarkable 2 is that for really in-depth technical drawings, it takes upwards of a minute to load them up if there's a lot of detail. Thoughts based on the video- I was going to insta-buy this in the next couple months, but I'm now similarly torn. I like the idea of adding colour, but I could just as easily just export and finish sketches in Rebelle 7 Pro on my PC. I use mine predominantly for sketching so the flashing is extremely distracting- I'm unsure if the trade-off would be worth it there. I found the previous size perfect as well, so they're not gaining a lot with the bigger size since Zooming in was fine previously. As an artist, the wobble and the fact the pen needs to be charged makes it nearly an immediate no. While I do appreciate the colour accuracy, if it's going to be flashing like an annoying sign on every stroke or interaction it's not going to be very appealing. It seems like the Canvas color screen needs more work. Currently I'd say the jury's out on this one.. I'll have to look at more reviews/videos to see if I'm willing to invest in this next level and see what else is currently on market. Ideally, I want something that's fast, excellent battery life, no charging pen, capability to sync notes to Obsidian, no pen wobble, with layer blending & some extra sketchbook tools. The main selling point to me is the long battery life & ability to work anywhere in the sun. No screen fatigue is great, so the backlight is wasted on my use-case. I do like that the new folios have the protector for the pen, I've lost count of how many times I've nearly lost my pen so that is a small but critical add. I am hoping that some of the excess screen flashing can be fixed in subsequent software updates as if not... that may be enough to make me skip it. If it's a hardware issue with the technology.. that technology IMO needs more investment/development before it's solid enough for consumer grade. I'm obviously a bit biased here as I use it more for art, but as it has the capacity to fill the niche of being a perfect sketchbook, it'll be a point I'll continue driving home in future surveys from their team.

Thanks for the review! I currently own a reMarkable 2, and there are two key issues I’ve encountered that I hope the new reMarkable Paper Pro addresses: 1. When my digital notebook reaches 30+ pages, it becomes quite difficult to find specific comments or notes. The scrolling on the reMarkable 2 feels slow and cumbersome. Could you show how the new reMarkable handles scrolling through long notebooks and share your thoughts on it? 2. The templates provided on the reMarkable 2 are somewhat limited, so I ended up creating custom “scheduler” templates to enhance my workflow and productivity. However, adding new templates required some technical work, like connecting to the reMarkable’s Linux system. Does the new Paper Pro make it easier to set up custom templates? Maybe set a page you designed/scratched as a template for other notebooks? If not (and to the extent that you can check), is it still possible to add templates via the file system? Lastly, based on your experience, would you recommend upgrading from the reMarkable 2 to the new Paper Pro? Thanks again for your detailed review!

Your review is eye-opening in more ways than one... I just wanted your opinion as a teacher if you think the colours of this device are a good trade-off for the functionality of the Supernote? Hearing back from you would be awesome! As background, I'm a medical student, so drawing is a big factor and the main thing making me insecure in my choice of buying A5X2 when it comes out. Thank you!

Thanks for your great reviews. In a future evaluation video, please advise if the Paper Pro allows you to insert inks in a notebook to other notebooks or PDFs similar to the Supernote.

Waited 2 years from deciding I might want a remarkable but thought might be a new one coming, to now, concluding I don’t think I actually want to pay that much for stuff I’m mostly not bothered about. I don’t want something that big, I don’t expect to need the backlight, and colour is nice but I’m very sensitive to flashing images. Therefore finally ordered a Remarkable 2 last night and it feels like I wasted 2 years. Though I’m tempted to also get the paper pro and hoping I can managed their satisfaction guarantee return process to return the one I like less (if not both)

Thank you! I’ve watched basically all your vids over the year. Ultimate question now… Boox 3C or this? And boox 3C has screen issue too as I research?

Eek is right! The flashing is quite distracting! Thanks for the candid review ☺

Really glad to see this video after seeing the mainstream tech reviewers post their generic reviews. You are a trusted voice in this nich market. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the trickle of comparisons and benchmarks. The initial reviews from reddit definitely has more leaning on the fence to explore other brands, as you mentioned I am wanting more apps on eink. And I don't know if the performance reviews on the pro, being a rm2 daily user, will be enough for me to keep giving RM my money.

Fantastic overview. I think I will wait a while before getting into one of these E-ink tablets thought. I have had the Remarkable 2 on my wishlist for a while but now I think I will wait for what the competition comes out with after the release of this tablet.

Is the power button any different than the remarkable 2? I accidentally jammed it on my 2, and read online other ppl had that issue as well. Not ruined by any means, still works. But hoping the 3 is different style for the button.

Please show the front light. I returned my boox go 10.3 because it lacked a front light and was super dark to use. What I expected to be white was grey.
@joshwilson1279Ай бұрын
Slightly niche question, but could you have a look at it in a mind mapping perspective as well? That involves (ideally infinite canvas) but a fair bit of zooming in and out, resizing. I know at the moment there is only unlimited vertical scroll, but in theory resizing and zooming can essentially negate it- versus on competing products? Thanks in advance

How does it feel in comparison to weight vs the Remarkable2? Love the video
@LeoColtraneАй бұрын
For me the biggest upgrade is having the light. That's major. Writing in the dark is great. But I'm having a hard time acclimating to this screen. It's textured, far more than the rM2, but I don't know if I can get used to this. I'd be settling because of how great it is to have the light. If the rM2 had a front light, I'd be fine. That screen/marker combo is great. All that to say, I'm looking for one of those screen covers that add some drag to the writing experience. I miss being able to write lightly without slipping. Any suggestions?

Love your videos and how you speak and express yourself, thanks for the content! I returned my Remarkable 2 and got this, and I have the impression that the screen background with no light is darker than the Remarkable 2, is it true? Also, how would you compare the background color with the Go 10.3? I know the 10.3 it's lighter, but just how much more?

Could you compare the remarkable pro with Boox Tab X (13.3-inch device) and share your thoughts on which one works best for reading A4-sized (or letter size in USA) scientific papers and taking notes? I'm more interested in the differences in refresh rates and screen-size differences than the ability to read and write in colors. Thank you!!

Does the screen ever wear out from continued writing on it, like lose it’s paper feel and smooth out like the Paperlike film used for IPads and such?
@telockett9850Ай бұрын
Thanks Kit, I love the rM, but also a dual user with the Supernote. I feel a little underwhelmed and look forward to your other videos. I will most likely will upgrade in a few months as I thin the larger screen will be beneficial.

I am not sure. I think it's still not ready. Maybe onyx could make it faster. At the moment.... you have to really think if you need it or not.
@KitBetts-MastersАй бұрын
Correct. It's great for what it does well, but if you change the content on screen a lot and use a lot of colour it's not a pleasant experience.

The only other e-ink device is a Kindle Scribe that I predominantly read on and take some notes/to-dos. I want to start using the Scribe more for work meetings and then the Pro was announced. It’ll be interesting to see how I get on, do you have much experience with the Scribe vs others, what will surprise me the most?

Ouch ! Wobbly lines and lack of accuracy in the borders is what made me return my rM 1 and 2... I really hoped it would be better. Thanks for saving me 1k€ (and Earth resources !) :)

Do they make nibs that are more like the nibs for the remarkable 2? The new pen/nibs slide/slip more than the remarkable 2
@riley6723Ай бұрын
I think the “flashing” is a visual filler to compensate for the screen pause lag time? When switching inputs. Only a thought.
@merylcooperАй бұрын
What are your thoughts on the backlight? I was quite disappointed. And the screen seems much darker

Hi Kit, I'd love to see how a monthly agenda looks on this tablet. Do daily entries quickly overwhelm the small space of each day's box? Curious if this will be the right tablet for me. Thanks!

Can you check, in the top area, when writing the notes, drawing with the stock pensil, with black color, whether the strokes on the screen would always show precisely, most importantly, if you would keep on drawing the line, continously? There has been reported issues with that, that strokes would stop showing and/or would not be precisely showing compared to the hand movement.
@KitBetts-MastersАй бұрын
It sort of bends up towards the corner like around a magnet. Not bad though. I'll keep my eyes out for that behaviour though!
@jacksonierАй бұрын
Another ask: check , by any chance, when the device screen is turned off, if you see any kind of "bright spot" on the display, despite it is being turned off, like some very very tiny "spot" (or multiple), which would be having kinda "constant tiny light"...There has been also issues reported abt such a defects, hopefully you don't have it
@KitBetts-MastersАй бұрын
No, can't see that at all. Is it the yellow ghosting maybe?

I’m sure you’ve heard this before… but you give some Bob Ross vibes man and I love it
@LeoColtraneАй бұрын
which alternate USI pen did you briefly try in this video? Is the nib softer than the rM marker? The new is rigid and more slippery than the rM2
@KitBetts-MastersАй бұрын
Hiya, it was a Penoval, but no, it wasn't working. I have since been informed by USI that the remarkable does not use a USI stylus.

I’d really like to know if you can transfer typed notes to a Word document, how tedious that process is, and if it translates well to Word if you have pictures or handwritten notes drawn alongside your typed notes? I always look forward to your reviews on these types of tablets. Thanks 🎉

After watching your review, I am not sure how big the advantages of the reMarkable Paper Pro are against their second product the reMarkable 2… Could you evaluate on these differences a little bit more? I would appreciate this very much. Thank you so far for your excellent review of the new product of reMarkable.!
@ttbirds1082Ай бұрын
Thanks for the review. For me, the flashing / refresh approach would be too offputting for me. Would like a BW version.

Kit one question please : is the brightness of RM pro without light same as Onyx BOOX Air 3 C without light ? Because as I noticed there is a difference to brightness between RM2 and RM pro !! I want to buy RM pro but I don’t like the brightness of BOOX Air 3 C when frontlight is off …

i saw on a promotion video that you can tag you notes to go back to them easier. Is that possible to make multi-tags researches ? i seems difficult to organize multiple notes (like for a student or so). Thanks for you vidéos, it's helping me figuring out which model to choose for my upcomming studies 😊

Is there an opacity setting on the ink, for instance if i wanted to sketch lightly with the black colour, and then work ontop of it with heavier black colour ontop? The flashing of colour is slightly off putting. Is that exagerrated by the filming? Fundamentally, I'm intererested in being able to quickly sketch and note take. I'm torn between rM2 or this new rMPP.
