The term "Backbeat" has been around since Chuck Berry wrote the song "Rock and Roll Music" in May 1957. In the song he sings "it's got a backbeat you can't loose it". The Beatles and The Beach Boys also covered the song in the 60's and had hits with it. So, the term has been around long before the seventies.

@@ana291crisDrumming is wonderful if you want a job in the performing arts. I don't know what your hopes and dreams are (and you certainly don't need to rush into any!), but mine was always to be on-stage, and drumming is a better way to achieve that than acting, juggling, magic, or wire-walking (all of which I've done). It turns out that every band needs a drummer, and every event needs a band, so you can make a part-time job out of it reasonably quickly. But you do you. If that's drumming, welcome to the team! If that's something else, I hope it brings you all the joy

Great video. Growing up in the middle of nowhere, long before the internet flooded us with an endless stream of free teaching material, I mostly had to teach drumming to myself. A lot of the time I'd spend hours just experimenting with moving stuff around a little and figure out what sounded good (you don't even have to be on a drumset necessarily). And while I wish I had only 10% of the material every aspiring drummer has on their finger tips these days, I think this freeform experimenting approach is still something younglings should do occasionally. It's amazing how deeply you can learn when you accidentally land dead-center in groove town on your own, without imitating what someone else does.

Moving the 2 back to the “and” but keeping the 4 in place sounds like Chad Smith from RHCP. On Souk To Squeeze he moves the first and second measure 2’s back to their respective “and” while keeping the 4 in place but then goes straight 2 and 4 on the third and fourth measures. That’s one line that has eluded me. It’s nice to see it up on the board so I can math it in my head. Thanks Brandon!

man, you're speaking right to me. I'm a self taught drummer , with the help of a few friends. I've always loved playing around with the placement of the snare, and basically everything else. playing alone it's easy to lose myself in new grooves, but when I would jam with friends I could only ever find myself playing basic 4/4 backbeats, unless it was a more specific type of style. I don't blame the other players I think it's just a mechanism of keeping things smooth
@kiwiingenuity66663 жыл бұрын
I've always wondered why 2 and 4 became the back beat and literally not anything else
@rkomada883 жыл бұрын
It comes from the "tap-roll-tap-roll-tap" pattern found in marches that snare drummers play. The march was Americas first pop music craze beginning around 1850, through the civil war era and up to the early teens (1915). The first commercially produced jazz record (1917) has a bit of a March feel to it. The roll itself is usually a five stroke roll, a basic rudiment.
@joedoherty10623 жыл бұрын
I do this sortof thing all the time, such a simple way to spice things up without confusing the listener. I like to scoot the "4" snare note back a 16th, like you did in the video. it makes it groove hard IMO, I call it the anticipation groove. I think playing with anticipation and subverting expectations can play a big part in making something groove.

*Instead of moving the backbeat ahead or behind by an even 16th note..., try just lagging the snare hits by a few milliseconds, while keeping the kick and hat dead on the beat... That's one of the secrets to getting that epic Bonhamesque heaviness..., while adding just a touch of swing, but still keeping it more straight than swing... You can then 'tighten' or 'loosen' the groove by adjusting the lag on the snare, more lag for more looseness, and vice/versa... The trick is just keeping that lag even...*

You guys jamming or even a drum battle would be insane! 😝🤘 Secondly. Great video man! I'm sure this video was supposed to be more aimed towards beginners but, I noticed when you were playing along to the first few in the middle of the video, when you are moving the snare hits around. You were doing lots of ghost notes and extra beats too. Which is wicked cool and all but I suggest most of the drummers that would be needing this info, may possibly get confused with hearing the extra notes to what they are seeing/reading? I don't know but I know I loved it and was fine with reading the music and following what you were playing and saying.
