I'm just a hobbyist so I'm not trained in illustration, but I found myself repeatedly thinking "hmm, this is missing something but I don't know what" and I was impressed with how intuitively he seemed to find the solution and how he executed it so tastefully; including things that worked out *much* better than I expected like the long shadow on the Spotify icon.

i disagree! theres a much larger reason at play. the reason we used realistic icons at the beginning is to draw everybody in. familiarity does wonders, especially for older audiences which was their main goal. the elderly could have looked at an icon with a microphone and go "hey, this records!" at the time this WAS simplicity. theres videos out there that explain it better than i did, but thats the gist and the goal of things like fruitiger aero and skeumorphism. the reason we switched to minimalism is because fruitiger aero and similar things envoke *emotion.* minimalism for the most part does not. now that everybody is aware on how to use a phone and apps, how do they keep them on? simple, neutral designs that evoke little emotion. its a similar reason to why doomscrolling is such a problem. its numbing, it doesnt envoke much in you so you continue to use it. its literally just a tactic to keep you on longer

Omg, I've been watching your videos for about two months now. I randomly needed clipart for a portfolio piece and a project for my game design bachelor's; keep in mind that I can't draw for chiz. I looked for about 10 minutes before I gave up, opening gimp, and decided to draw it. Your words echoed in my head, and it actually came out decent.
