Yoko Taro: "They will only be released in Japan, in obscure forms and I have no intent to translate any of them." Me: "Cool." Shout out to yourself and all the other translators and fans who compiled and localised all these essential pieces of lore, short stories and scripts that Taro has scribbled out over the years. It genuinely amazes me that with the newfound popularity of the series, all the cd dramas, short stories and lore segments haven't been compiled into a book and localised. @BrandoSP If I'm not mistaken, I believe there are TWO types of maso - the white maso particles coming from the Watcher corpse, the Flower, and Her Inflorescence, and red maso, harnessed from the dragon Angelus. Since dragons are the antithesis of Watchers, I think it's safe to say that any Replicant or Gestalt that uses magic, can actually defeat Watcher entities by bombarding them with red maso particles. Had there been a peaceful solution to the game's story, any Watcher invasion could be soundly beat back by the local humans. Especially with heavy hitters such as Wendy, The Twins, The Shadowlord, and Louise.

the backstory of Nier games have so much potential as a standalone game tbh. I wish we'd get a game that set place in between Drakengard & Nier Replicant timeline, and have brother Nier to be one of the main characters in the party members (which would give us a big reveal at the end of the game that he has a sister named Yonah, thus revealing his identity as brother Nier). Also, since brother Nier doesn't have a name, it would be shocking even more for the plot twist if they'll give him a name in this game, so we'll be like "oh my god, turns out *insert name here* is brother Nier this whole time?!?? . @@dogsoldier123 I can see where you might find that Taro is going by the seat of his pants, but his talent in writing is fundamentally more sound than Nomura. There is a visible difference between them when it comes to crafting narratives and characters. That said, Nomura is playing more to typical shonen fantasy storytelling, and his familiarity with that allows him to do a decent job, barring issues in Dream Drop Distance and KH3 (and God, I am not going into the mess that is the mobile games). Taro, however, has a handle on the mechanics and technical details of creating a story, lore, characters, and plot/narrative. He plays fast and loose because that's his personality, but just because he's comfortable like that doesn't mean it undermines his craft. As far as the finer details being lost on people with Drakengard/NieR, the same can be said of KH. And ultimately, that's their issue for not investing the time. I can say, having invested time in both IPs, that Taro is far more competent as a storyteller. Nomura is an excellent art director and designer, and has an eye for action and flair that makes him suitable in a directorial position (he just needs supervision). Taro actually understands storytelling well enough that he can go crazy with it and make something compelling.
@dogsoldier1233 жыл бұрын
@@CloakofAuron Well I'm mostly agree with you and saying that maybe Yoko Taro is up more competent storyteller. The main problem is if you want to know the overall lore especially for Western audiences it's going to be nier (lol I'm so funny) impossible to understand everything. One good example would have to be during side B in nier automata where 9s talks about a volcano erupting when it was actually Beepy and that he's the reason why the machines are so docile and started becoming interested in humanity. Although you are mostly right about nomura at least I figured his stories are easier to get ahold of do the fact that all you need to do is just follow the games. Yes I understand the phone game has a s*** ton of *very* important stuff but thankfully someone by the name of Everglow on KZbin has compiled all the important bits and despite many people's grievances with DDD and KH3 I actually enjoy Kingdom hearts 3 story for bringing everything that started with KH1 to a close and I'm not sure if you are the same complaint with DDD as other people with the whole time travel thing a lot of people tend to forget that Kh2 started the whole time travel thing with Merlin and just opening a portal to the past in Minnie's world. Which funny enough is mentioned in Kingdom hearts III by replica Riku.

Great video, as always! On the whole "Why did it take a military 30 years to defeat something that a Final Fantasy party took down", one :: Snerk :: Okay that was pretty funny, but seriously I think it has to do with the era itself. A few items: - A modern military trains for certain circumstances they might encounter, but the idea of people going essentially zombie mode or turning into salt probably threw morale off a good bit. You've got people hesitating to do certain things because they're worried the entire time about THEMSELVES randomly catching whatever the opposition has or going beserk. Is it in the air? Is the blood contagious? Ohhh god, did I just swallow some of the salt that blew off that human-shaped salt lick, am I going to go next? That's got to have a fairly negative effect on cohesion. - Population - Tokyo is a fairly densely populated city, so as the WCS spreads, even at a low % of the population you're probably talking about more bodies than a larger share of a less dense replicant population, since the latter would have been based on the surviving humans at the time of Gestalt. - Bureacray & Civilian/Military decision making - In the modern times, some of the decisions made reflect the resources available, as well as the bureaucratic mindset surrounding it. Such as building freaking wall around a densely populated city. That's an option the civilization-repressed/freshly awakened replicants just didn't have to even consider wasting time on. As such, every event that happens during the initial spread has to get government buy in or even allied buy in when the world governments start to work together. This involves a lot of political and other leaders who are worried about the impact, their legacy, and what legal repercussions could come about. The replicants of the latter years, after the fall of ciliation, had none of those concerns. They just wanted the sonuvabitch dead and... went and did it. They didn't think about if X country would bring them up on charges of War Crimes, or if they would lose an election when the extent of what they had done was finally revealed. You can see this happening at times in other games, with FFXIV (My current gaming drug of choice) as an example: There's plenty of times "Adventurers" are brought in to do something because if the governments did it, it would cause a huge stir or require a lot more time to get all the necessary votes. Or someone would try to use the situation to try and edge for power, even while they feigned cooperation (looking at you, Syndicate...). Whereas a non-governmentally aligned adventurer can just go in, wreck shit, collect loot, and call it a day. And the last, most important, reason, prior knowledge of the enemies - While the Replicants don't know world history, the androids DO. And they know that the last time Red Eye got taken out, the Legion became far less of a threat. While the modern-era military likely knew Red Eye was a big leader, they didn't know with certainty taking it out would be a game-ender for the Legion. So they had to develop their policy around the idea that there could be other leaders that will arise. The androids know from the end of the original war that Red Eye IS with certainty the hive mind, so from day one they had their target. Overall, I think all that is enough to potentially reduce the war down a few decades.

Id say its more like every shade is part of the way relapsed.. its when they fully relapse that the replicant dies from the scrawl and the gestalt loses all sanity. Some gestalts are more resistant to relapse. Shadowlord is also relapsed but his drive to save his sister keeps him from doing so. Yonah started to relapse as soon as she touched the book. The reason why all shades are in some stsge of relapse is the replicants sentience and the shadowlord losing his conviction for his sister actually being saved. So essentially as the relapse developes so does the violent tentendancies and total loss of sanity. Project gestalt would remove the replicants sentience.. thus reversing partial relapse for most. Full relapsed shades habe no replicant to go into. And partially relapsed gestalts can join their own body threw posession but they will always coexist inside the replicant shell with the replicant.

One thing though, is that you mention that there are multiple bridges and roads connecting Honshu and Kyushu. I live in Kyushu near to the only bridge connecting Kyushu to the mainland, so I wanted to point out that this fact is incorrect. In the aerial photo you show of the area you can see one large bridge called the Kanmon Bridge which connects Fukuoka (Kyushu) to Yamaguchi (Honshu) and is the only over land bridge to do so. The only other way to cross, besides going over the water on a boat, or flying, is a car tunnel beneath the bridge (also beneath the ocean), and a pedestrian tunnel even further beneath that.

It is interesting. If Caim from Drakengard is based on Guts from Berserk, can we say that Nier is based on Griffith.
@asbehsam3 жыл бұрын
@@kagetsuki23 Hmmm I don't know I don't think Nier's character resembles Griffith, maybe just the appearance? Because Nier's character's need and want are very different from Griffith and they could be the opposites. Nier is kindhearted and positive even in the face of everything that's going on because it's his coping mechanism, and I think it's shown as a big part of his character that he doesn't care about himself, not even one bit. His whole life has been about Yuna (both Gestalt Nier and Replicant Nier) to the point that he considers only her and not himself at all. When he's calling for help in the beginning he literally says "Someone help Yuna!" and not "us" (as you know this is something the English translation messed up) and when he wants to go to the seaside merchant to sell his body he again thinks of Yuna and repeats this is for Yuna (this was really shocking, tbh, my heart broke for him). Even in Ending D he doesn't care about himself at all. I think it's even emphasized by showing kids his age playing and running around while he just has to go kill for Yuna. Nier is all about others. First Yuna, then Kaine, etc. He would break the world for them and not for himself (which might be why we're willing to forgive him). This hugely contradicts Griffith who does everything for himself and his own ambitions and wants everyone on board for his own goals and he uses and kills and does the most terrible things to his own friends for it. On the other hand, I think a lot of what Yoko Taro said about his characters and happy endings. He said Caim doesn't deserve happiness because he kills mercilessly for revenge and for himself, and he doesn't deserve a happy ending. But Nier, and even 2B and 9S are difference because they have suffered a lot (especially Nier who literally lives a hellish life just for his sister) are different and have paid for their mistakes so he allowed them a tiny portion of happiness. I really don't think someone like Griffith would fit in here (I do feel bad for him but I cannot forgive him). Sorry for the long msg. I'm a writing mentor and I find these stories so interesting. I think it is worth noting that originally, DoD2 final ending was supposed to lead into NieR's world by no longer needing seals and Midgard reverting back to Europe as before the Cataclysm - it was shown this way in one of the world companion books (DoD World Inside I think?), but later on they changed that so DoD2 is now completely separate branch from any other. We also know that Tyrann, human that lived in Kaine as Shade, is in fact a descendant of Nero, who was an elf in Drakengard's branch. So it is still possible that main timeline of Drakengard is actually the past world of Nier, not a separate timeline entirely. Tho the other possibilty is that it is just a different timeline branch. And I see people usually have misconception of what Midgard is. It is NOT a different world or universe. It is Europe that was turned upside down thanks to Cataclysm, in which everything occured as in real world before the events in Iberian Penninsula. We also know that Accord is tied to Cathedral City, and she came from 6000s from the dark side of Earth. Which leads to conclusion that most likely there is a bootstrap paradox, in which Cataclysm occured because Cathedral City was transported along with Accord, dragons and magic from the future, and because of this it was brought into Shinjuku in the first place, creating a loop of events that occur because of each other with no point of origin.

So like you said the black scrawl is caused by the Replicant rejecting the Gestald (soul), but if it is like that how did yonah get it in the beginning? was she already a replicant at that time and if she was, how did they remove the black scrawl, since we are told it incurable and can only be slowed. And if Nier agreed to become the shadow lord to stableize all gestalts and in return his sister would be treated, would that mean that Yonah and Nier were "true" humans in the beginning Also i dont know if its answered in the game or not, i couldnt find the answer but what was the purpouse for the grimores? Were they meant to be a type of catalyst for when the gestalts and the replicants were going to be reunited or were they made for a different purpose?
@ThBrando3 жыл бұрын
So the Grimoires were handed out to people at random. Everyone who touched the grimoire who didn't have the potential to become the "Shadowlord" would immediately black scrawl and have their Gestalt go berserk. Nier has the potential so he got the books power, and he fights the ones that were rejected. He tells Yonah not to touch the book but she accidentally does and immediately begins to turn. They put her Gestalt on ice to slow the process in exchange for Nier playing ball, but eventually it stops being effective causing her replicant to begin to scrawl again, which kicks off the Shadowlord taking matters into his own hands.

@@ThBrando So then in the begining of Nier they have already gone through the gestalt project and are no longer human? and also i dont know if you will put it in aother video or not but do you know what is in the bunker on the moon? We know its human DNA or genome of some kind but do we know what it is? like a chopped leg a drop of blood or something like that? Also thanks for clearing up the issue with the grimoires for me

Imagine if the initial tragedy that led to WCS happened in the USA, with its security culture. I have a feeling things would have ramped up in response very quickly, even though the lay populous would probably be telling themselves the disease doesn’t exist while their neighbors died. And likely the extensive international travel would have spread the disease globally a lot quicker.

It’s interesting how it seems like there’s two full games between Drakengard snd Replicant; slaying Redeye and his white legion would have been an excellent driving force, as well as fighting as that Final Fantasy party in the war I wonder if we’ll ever get games or even get to visually see that. We literally have two different main villains and armies with no design yet Something like Nier: Redeye and Nier: Legion or something

What I actually like about the extra lore for the Nier series is that I feel like it isn't necessary for you to understand the actual main story of the Nier games. In fact, I think both games even stand alone just fine separately and depending on which you experience first, your experience of the other game also varies. It's in a way even fascinating to me because I think much really depends on the details and context you absorb and I feel like they don't actually necessarily completely spoil each other. When I started getting into this series I was all intimidated and also excited because people seemed to make such a huge deal about the massive connections between Drakengard and Nier. I think this actually really affected my opinion of the Drakengard stories. When I got to everything recently, I felt dissapointed because I expected so much out of Drakengard 1 and 3's stories. The way people seemed to hype it up, I was expecting a really deep exploration of screwed up people, but what I got with 1 was a preachy and shallow mess with maybe interesting ideas buried in there and with 3 a schlockfest with a lot of shock value that got really old after a while with also maybe something resonant in there somewhere buried under some really insufferable writing. None of the interesting ideas really shone through to me over all of the bad stuff and I feel like most of the bad stuff, like the uninteresting, one-dimensional characters especially wasn't actually intentionally bad, just written by someone who hadn't written many stories, particularly with Drakengard 1. The writers (one of them Yoko Taro) were just sometimes self-aware about it. But it was at least interesting *at points*. I think there was something interesting buried deep in there and sometimes very memorable imagery, some of which showed up in Nier in much more complex and interesting form. The skill and probably time they were given just didn't match the ambition and they knew. That they knew and had some interesting ideas buried in there is what saved both stories from being a complete waste of time for me. (I really wanted to like these stories more than I did.) I 100% think they have a good basis, but if there is a remake, unlike OG Nier, they really have to straighten-out much of the writing, too. Or at least elaborate. I think you can do a good "bad" game, but it is a very delicate balance between intentional and unintentional and I think even just a little bit more elaboration and complexity in even just the games' scripts could do wonders. Anyway, whenever I looked up Nier stuff, people always seemed to really emphasize how you really need to experience all of the Drakengard games and read all of the extra material to actually understand the story and you'll be all confused without it, but now that I've done all of that I feel it really isn't because it actually doesn't affect the core narrative of the games that much. It's neat, but I feel it's not mandatory at all and I find that a very good thing because I think that kind of stuff can drive away new fans and really be a barricade to people who want to get into a series when not handled well.

@dantecrailman88612 жыл бұрын
The Gestalts are humans themselves. They've been called "Shades" by the Replicants. If a Gestalt died, its corresponding Replicant will "relapse" which will also kill the Replicant in the process.
