As a Kannadiga from Bangalore I can confidently tell you that coffee is a staple beverage here. It is by no means an elite drink. It is consumed in every household and it goes way beyond the modern roasters in town. Filter coffee is available for as little as Rs 10. There is a reason why most of these modern coffee chains are established in Bangalore first. We already had a coffee culture for centuries.

Hi Palki, Have always appreciated your research reports. If you dont mind, humbly, I would like to make a small point. There seems to be a small error in one of your data points. The report predomnantly focuses on the bigger brand coffee outlets , but having lived in Tamil nadu most since childhood, I can tell you the corner tea shops across, sell way more. Also as someone who started his career at Nestle', I have studied this market out of curiosity. The ground numbers as per my estimates are : TN alone will have more than 1 lakh unbranded tea shops and roughly 400 cups of tea are sold in each shops costing about Rs 10-12 and 50-100 cups of coffee priced Rs 15 (mostly instant coffee) are sold. But the major sale of coffee is in south indian restaurants like Sangeetha (mostly filter coffee), since coffee is a integeral part of breakfast and in most cases comes along with the combo breakfast. My conclusion: the unorganised market (as for most products consumed in india) is still unorganised.. contributing more than 90% of the sale of the organised brands.

Coffee originates from north Africa & was exported to middle East where it became an art. From these regions variants where developed which Portuguese traders eventually took to Brazil which produced it en mass for the growing demand.yet be it tea , coffee or fizzy soft drinks 1 Indian origin product sits behind it all - sugar cane ! Most of the coffee variants that are grown in India are robusta and not arabica. Robusta is more susceptible to temperature change when compared to arabica that is mostly being affected by global climate change. One more reason why your average cuppa prices have increased is because robusta coffee is much more expensive than arabica for the first time in the coffee market after decades as the procurement of coffee from India have increased to the global markets as production has decreased in the large coffee growing nations like Brazil, Ecuador, Vietnam etc. The coffee market in India is booming right now as all in the supply chain are being benefited from the planter, to the cafes and consumers due to lack of coffee elsewhere due to global warming

Coffee and tea are the most addictive drinks. The cells in body needs more and more. The size of the beverage portions are too large, most of the time it becomes difficult to finish it. Most of us skip breakfast and then have a cup of tea or coffee when we have a headache not aware of the real cause. It is the ambiance of a coffee shop that costs more than the coffee.
