Can’t believe that I can actually write this - but I was there. I was in Bimhuis Amsterdam that night, when this amazing performance was recorded. What a privilege for a twenty year old, and a sax student at the time. The best live show I have ever witnessed, without a doubt.

The Branford Marsalis Quartet at its PEAK. This video is a great rendition of what these guys were doing but to be there and feel that energy coming off the stage? Haven't witnessed anything before or after like it. I saw this line up perform five times in small venues and holy shit.....they never failed to burn down the stage. So good it's almost laughable. Tain coming out of an epic drum solo right into a 320 bpm swing? Hahaha! Listening to these guys live was like riding a roller coaster. Strap on your seat belts!

Once I asked my mother flight attendant: please, when in New York, go into a music store and ask for the best in jazz. She returned with Branford's Dark Keys and Kenny Werner's Delicate Balance. That was a game changer. Later on I got a record of a Love Supreme but it might be with Kenny Kirkland on the piano, I think. About ten years later. I took my future wife to a live performance in Warszawa Torwar and I told her: You are about to experience something amazing and absolutely on the highest level of musicianship. She was amazed especially by the contrast between the supporting act and Branford with Joey on the piano and Watts on the drums. I forget who the bass player was.

In 2005, I actually sat in with this same group and survived! (Flint Michigan, the Whiting Auditorium as Bran's guest). In 2019, I played Resolution when Ravi Coltrane and Matt Garrison (Jimmy's son, bassist on the original) both stopped by to complement my playing. Both experiences were outta sight!

Branford is intelligent, creative, open minded, listens and the best of todays saxohone players. Another man I love is Joshua Redmond, these two gentlemen are on par with each other. Thank God when we think that many masters are gone. We have Mr Wayne Shorter and a few other killin' players.
