Branford Marsalis Interview

This was a group project for my film class. It's a little rough, but it's because it was our first project, and completing this project was how we all learned to use the equipment, and it was my first experience doing any kind of directing, or any sort of interview.

I first learned of Branford when he played on Sting’s album in the 80’s. I’d follow along with his sax part the entire song no matter which track. I was an instant fan. I’m also from Richmond, Va. His father used to teach music at our college in town, Virginia 10:13 Commonwealth University.

At 8 minutes in, he makes a great point -- that you should listen to as many styles as you possibly can, even things far from "your interests." And I've seen him live it. Too long to explain here, but I was working for Branford over a few years and during this time, he was the band leader for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. And one night, the Tonight Show's musical guest was country superstar Garth Brooks. And I noticed that while Garth Brooks was singing, every member of the band, other than Branford, was doing their own thing. They weren't being disrespectful, they were quiet, but they weren't focused. Branford, on the other hand, was focused like a laser. I saw it in his eyes. I asked him about it later, he made the same point. He is ALWAYS absorbing everything he can learn, even when you might expect he wouldn't.

Loved the short, obscure piece you played at the beginning, Branford. How many folk would know that it was the Kissing Bug', popular in the war? I recall hearing it, decades ago, on the radio,, with Duke Ellington and the vocal by that talented singer Joya Sherrill! That must've been the original wartime recording, I'd hazard!

I’m here because Rashawn Ross (trumpet player for Dave Matthews Band) said that the late Leroi Moore (sax player for DMB) drew rock influence from Branford on Sting’s “...Nothing Like the Sun” record. Branford is a true gift.

Very, very funny that incident in France when Branford kept telling that French couple that "he was a battery" instead of saying "he wanted a battery" in correct French. Sometimes life lessons are really a school of hard knocks. Undoubtedly one of the most brilliant saxophonist of modern day jazz.

Branford is just not a likeable guy. I buy his music. I'm a fan. But hearing him offer up a story about the mix up in the french convenient store seems insincere. That's can't be in his top 100 interesting stories. He just doesn't really want to do more than music for people. He just wants to make great music and not be a "celebrity".
