Does this mean I no longer have to be afraid to mention that I am not a fan of Sonny Rollins? Probably not. But truth is, most famous jazz soloists past and present leave me cold. Yet, I am a huge jazz fan. Dexter, Miles, Cannonball, Zoot, Bird, the young Joe Henderson, and yes, Brubeck and Desmond. I am thinking of lots more. I guess I should mention Branford.

Anybody can play jazz jazz is what you want it to become..its all about perseption if i want to become a pop jazz musician just learn pop songs on Saxaphone michael jackson earth wind n fire ..right then your a pop jazz musician...if you want to be a free jazz Saxaphone player just play anything you feel like and your free notes is off dont matter as long as it makes sence to you basically fk your audience 😅😅😅😅😅

"the snare drum hadn't been invented yet" Not true, the snare or at least it's predecessors go back to the 15ht century. I love Branford and his superior knowledge, but's he's wrong on this one.

Branford is well aware of the fact that the snare drum had been invented. As New Orleanian he was exposed to several examples of that via the second line tradition alone along with it's military parade history. His classical musical exposure is also more reason to support his awareness of this fact. He appears to be making his statement with consideration or assumption that it will be perceived by a listener of a certain musical conscientiousness and maturity as he is obviously making reference to the snare within the context of it's use in what would become known as the drumset. His later reference to Baby Dobbs gives further credence to this statement.

@paradidd is correct. The snare was invented AND was used as part of a drum set. Baby Dodds had a snare drum, and so did all the other drummers of that time. The snare drum has been a part of the drum set since the drum set’s inception. I have lots of reverence for Branford and his knowledge and wisdom, but he was wrong on this one.
