I think Brass is very thematic. The mechanics fit the heyday of industrialization in England. Cotton, shipyards, coal, iron were the main industries ... The thing is: I only realized how thematic it is after doing a lot of research about Scotland at that time for my own game design.
Theme Summary: "Set during the English Industrial Revolution, players seek to expand their industrial influence through producing and shipping cotton and building the infrastructure to support this rapidly expanding industry." I think it does well to communicate this theme through the game mechanics. Brass is my favourite game. It has many layers, multiple strategies, requires an overarching strategy, and rewards timely and opportunistic play.

I'll have the reviewer know I believe there is much theme to this game. In the canal era I wear a powdered wig, and in the rail phase a top hat. In both eras I smoke copious amounts of opium and wear no pants, or perhaps assless chaps if I get confused.

I disagree that the theme is irrelevant to the play of the game. Could it survive to a retheming? Probably so. Is the theme the main focal point? Probably not. But, I have a friend originating from the Lancashire who will always request the game, and while he likes the mechanics, that's not the main reason. Also, the video description mentions that Tom Vasel reviews Brass, this might need to be changed :).
