That early 1990s "girls that just rolled out of bed and threw on something dirty from the hamper" look.

Some are Oregonians, so they were generally raised by second wave hippy feminist moms and were very free with their bopping. But I agree: they look so fetchingly sincere and playful today, don't they? I bet they didn't even make gas money on any of these gigs, but they changed lives. Now, it's time for the fourth Feminist Wave to give us another Riot GRRRL wave to give womens bodies back to women.

I'm pretty sure Bikini Kill and Bratmobile would say: "Don't feel sorry you weren't alive back then to hear us play. Just start your own band, you could do it way better then us." Make the music you want to hear, you can do it!

As an 1980's teenage Punk i felt that by 1990 the old Punk scene was over. The only thing that kept Punk Rock going in the 1990's was the RIOT GRRRL scene. They are the true saviours not the stupid orange county "jock punk" scene. Mecca Normal, Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, 7 Year Bitch, Team Dresch, Slant 6, Sleater-Kinney, etc....
@baratheda7773 ай бұрын
Riot Grrrl! Such a cool scene and so important. It was important to anyone not hetero and male. I love Kathleen H, Tobi and Allyson talk about that now. Kathleen has especially made it clear that she wanted anyone that used to be afraid to go to the front, should feel safe, including a brown, shy, homosexual boy

I had a friend in high school who was nuts for this, and any girl band from the 'Riot Girl' movement. So I thought I'd check it out .I'm not trying to be an asshole here, and I'm not gonna pick apart the bands skills or style, but if this EXACT SAME SOUND was being produced by boys.... Well suficit to say that you would never have heard of them. This is a blatant double standard. But hey, good for them for exploiting it.Especially With the hundreds of Independent Rock bands around N. America trying their hardest to make it somewhere, and these three dont even live in the same city.
@futureofwhat6 жыл бұрын
That's the point. When young boys show an interest in playing a musical instrument, most parents encourage them right away. When young men enter a music store to buy their first guitar, they aren't laughed at and intimidated to the point where they question themselves 100%. It's very hard for anyone to get "good" at music without the opportunities to do so. THAT'S the real double standard. AND YET, playing in a band is fun. The riot grrl movement was about reclaiming the RIGHT to be on a stage and pour your heart out and express yourself without necessarily having the musical chops of a brother or neighbor boy. Being "bad" is part of the subversion. It's punk rock.
@bangtwang38356 жыл бұрын
I've been a guitarist in some form of 'Punk' or other for about 20 years. My gay mom was a classical guitarist and teacher...so I became a Punk Rocker. I am a decent player, I have definitely invested more time into developing my own style than I did getting better at someone else's. The # 1 advice I always give my students, and myself, and my friends , and now you, is: DONT EVER REVEL IN BEING BAD !! Always try your best, always put your best foot forward, and ALWAYS be in the mindframe that what you are doing is the coolest! Trust me, your brain will implode if you try to go around thinking that your cool cuz you suck [ which I fully understand !] , but you still put your best foot forward. IT. WONT. WORK. Instead, REFUSE to be compared !!! I know that this is easier said than done, but you are YOU , and you do your shit [ painting, acting drawing, writing etc....] YOUR WAY !! It could be said that Cristian Slater is a Jack Nicholson knock off, or that the 'Pistols were just doing a tribute to the Ramones, or that Howard Dovoto was a hack for taking 'Shot by both sides' and using it as the hit song for Magazine when he left the Buzzcocks. But all those people refused to be part of a comparison equation and held their ground by saying, " this is ME, and this is how IIII do it !" I hope that this helps you along your path in life. Se@N.
