Despite being outnumbered and facing formidable opponents, she stands her ground, using her massive size and formidable horn to protect her offspring. Meanwhile, the young rhino calf, although smaller and less experienced, shows remarkable determination as it charges towards the lions, ready to defend itself alongside its mother. This display of courage from both mother and calf highlights the resilience and strength inherent in these magnificent creatures. Such encounters remind us of the harsh realities of the animal kingdom, where survival often depends on the ability to fend off threats from predators. It’s a testament to the bond between mother and offspring and the instinctual drive to protect and ensure the survival of the next generation. Such an absolute privilege to have witnessed this once in a lifetime sighting, and phenomenal capture 😮 Truly spectacular an experience that will surely live a lifetime 🙏 Congrats Guys 🎉

My friend, I wish you could’ve done the write up for our description of this video. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and apt description of the events which unfolded. As you mentioned, we were really blessed to be able to experience something as dramatic as this was and certainly as you mentioned, nature at its most brutal. Thank you so much for taking time to watch the entire video and your comments are certainly appreciated. I agree with you fully, I also believe that we let nature takes it course and that we don’t intervene unless the animal has been impacted through human element. However, due to the critically endangered status of Rhino’s, interventions in cases like this do occur and these decisions are made by the scientific team. The intervention took place two days after this incident so the lions weren’t impacted at all. Upon darting the mother, on assessment it was realized that she was actually carrying an infection from birthing the calf which is why her response to the lions looked extremely lethargic. Sorry for that. Essentially a harem of zebras came up and over the rise and the lionesses turned their attention to them instead. This gave the Rhino and her calf just enough time to get away from the lions. The intervention took place two days after this incident. They hid themselves in a drainage line in quite a rocky terrain so took a while to track them down. Essentially the mother was treated for her infection from birthing the calf which caused her lethargic response to the lions and the calf was treated with anti biotics as well as had his wounds disinfected.

Looks like it was a training lesson for the young cubs. Adult lion was not to active in the take down, maybe being cautious also. The Mother Rhino was calm and was saving her energy for when it was really needed. Lucky the assistance was there to protect the Baby Rhino, usually that is not the case. Most rangers do not like to intervene because they are in the wild and usually anything goes. Mother rhino was not to quick to defend the baby. Some animals are close to extinction, maybe that was the reason rangers assisted. Baby Rhino lived to see another day....let us all wish a long life for Momma and baby.

You are spot on in your observation regarding the mother of the sub adult females (I use the term sub adult loosely as they were around 2 at the time) and their 4 year old male older brother. However, what saved this rhino was a series of fortunate events where a harem of zebra came over a rise and distracted the lions for long enough for the mother rhino and her calf to move out of the area. Certainly, the decision was made by the scientific team to intervene due to the endangered status of rhino’s due to Rhino poaching. It was during this intervention that it was realized the mother was carrying an infection from birthing the calf which is why her response was so lethargic. Really appreciate your comment and input. 100%. It was certainly an intriguing sighting. Regardless of the health of the mother, in reality, if the lions have the desire and the persistence, they could’ve worn her out in good or bad health. What’s amazing about this Pride is that it’s certainly a learnt and specialized behavior. We’ve seen it a number of times where the sub adults (they have almost reached adulthood in this video) have taunted and teased full grown rhino’s with zero chance of success whilst that male (who’s quite young himself) and his mother watches on. It’s a behavior which has started to pay off in circumstances like the above where mothers are isolated with new born calves. Fortunately in this case, a harem of zebra came from over the rise and the mother lioness turned her attention towards them instead. Had these lioness’s been fully grown I have no doubt that this calf wouldn’t have made it that day. It’s the lack of experience of the young lionesses and the unwillingness of the mother to potentially injure herself that most likely caused them to divert there attention. This allowed the Rhino’s enough time to move off. Ultimately though, the mother being sick certainly had a huge impact on this particular case.

I noticed how the male lion just sat back and watched.....if the lions had caught/killed the calf he'd have rushed in and eaten it himself....

As is his right. He’s the one that keeps those females alive or hyenas would just be wiping out female lions left and right. When the males are away, hyenas will follow the pride of female lions and steal every prey they kill.

what happened to the rhino mother?
@brenoborgesborges23473 ай бұрын

The scientific team and vet did intervene and assess and give appropriate care and meds to both the Mom and Calf. It was found on assessment during the intervention that the mother was carrying an infection from birthing the calf and this was treated as well.

If you are going to intervene, wouldn't it make more sense to raise the calf till it's large enough to defend itself, then release?
@KrugerGoneWild9 ай бұрын
I see your point and it would certainly guarantee it’s survival to adult hood but there has to be a line and it’s one thing intervening as custodians of these endangered animals after the fact, it’s another to completely remove a calf from its mother and therefore completely affecting the natural order. Ultimately, the intervention was about giving an endangered animal the best chance of surviving in a normal natural habitat rather than to guarantee its survival if that makes sense. I think if there numbers had to drop below a certain number, where it was certainly life or death for the species, something drastic like what you’ve posed would then certainly be required. How that number is decided though is another thing completely. One could say, it’s better to do sooner rather than later. On that note what do you think about private owners being able to breed, dehorn and sell these horns in to the market? It would certainly drastically drop the price and also increase the Rhino population.
@KrugerGoneWild9 ай бұрын
Agreed, there are cases where lions have predated on larger herbivores like the ones you’ve mentioned but it’s a rare phenomenon rather than a daily occurrence as you say. These animals are highly opportunistic and they certainly saw an opportunity. In saying that however, this Pride are certainly adapting their behavior as I have witnessed them playing and toying with Rhino’s a few times. Most of which are more out of curiosity but it is interesting to see that they are starting to find a niche and in circumstances like the above, success.

@KrugerGoneWild9 ай бұрын
To be fair, there is no obligation to assist regarding any natural inter species interactions. However, the decision was made due to their endangered status. It also took a while to track these Rhino’s as they moved in to a dense drainage line in a very challenging terrain. The fact that both of these Rhino’s survived thanks to human intervention is a massive win amongst many losses which this species sadly incurs due to Rhino poaching.

a pessoa que estava filmando desde o início deveriam ter alertado os guardar para intervir pois as espécies são raras
