He was an army leader who wanted to make his country great, spread the ideals of the French revolution, and off course, be very famous by doing that. He definitely had bad traits, and was quite egocentric, but I wouldn't say villainous intent was part of his character.

I think you’d love Master and Commander with Russell Crowe. Easily the most historical accurate naval movie set during the napoleonic wars. The ship they built for the movie was so accurate the San Diego Maritime Museum bought the ship

Commodus didn't actually kill his father in real life but his incompetence actually plunged Rome into a civil war and never really recovered after that, he was also assassinated while in a bathtub by his own personal trainer.

I agree with you. To a certain part the Emperor evolved that way from his childhood on. Marcus Aurelius was right, when he said, he failed as a father (probably due to not being home most of the time - but at war, and doing politics). Now, sure, not everything is the fathers fault. There also was evil in the emperor from the beginning. As far my estimations about psychopaths go, a psychopath can be molded quiet a bit, when the molding is from his early childhood on. In fact, i knew a quiet nice psychopath once (who happend to be a mathematician too). The thing is: he , by definition, was not able to feel with others. When his grandma died, everyone cried, and he was just saying ''what are you crying ? She was old - we knew she would die sooner or later'' ... He completely not understood, what this ''crying'' is all about .. he even did not understood, what he did wrong, when he said that. By the years though, he recognized, that he functions much better with people (or they with him), when he acts nice ; says the right words - and just dont go every time the path of ''his advantage'' ... I met him already, when he was on that right path. For him it was not an emotional path, but a rational path. More comparable with ''Spock'' . But still - he became likeable , because despite he was not able to ''feel'' with others, he understood the importance, of threating people nice. He understood that social behavior is benefitial and makes sense in general. Now, its very rare that psychopaths understand this by their own. Most of them need therapy. And its very rare, that they go in therapy , because they dont feel anything ''wrong'' with themself. Because: their life just works by manipulating others, or taking advantage of others, etc.. A lot of psychopaths actually are quiet pleased with themselfs. Its the people around them who suffer from that psychopath. That makes it almost impossible that a psychopath ever sees a need for a therapy. Thats also a reason, why the therapy should be begin in the early childhood of those people. And its recognizable for parents, when they have a psychopath child. But parents usually dont want to admit it, or just want to put more weight on the positive sides... like ''ok, he killed a bird.. but on the other hand, he cleans his room all by his own, and his grades in the school are good!'' - for instance. And if a parent ignores that - or even worse: enables it, by complimenting his child for his ''good strong sides'' , the child sees no reason to change - in fact: the child thinks: he is on the right path - and so psychopathic parts gets worse and worse. If that child also gets with the wrong friends together, the wrong circumstances, it can build a very dangerous criminal. But in the most cases it stays that kind of guy/woman, who we experience as bully - in school, and even in adult life , in the job, etc..

One of my all-time favorites. For a film that was released in 2000, the cinematography was phenomenal. A moving story of a man who lost it all, eventually gets his vengeance, and in the end his peace.

Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture! Before Russell Crowe was cast as Maximus, Hugh Jackman was considered but turned it down to play Wolverine in the live action X MEN movie. Originally Crowe was also considered for the role. Antonio Banderas Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise and Tom Sizemore were considered for the part. The opening Battle scene was filmed in Surrey England, The gladiator training school was filmed in Morrocco, and finally, the scenes involving Ancient Rome was filmed in Malta, which lasted 19 weeks of filming. Oliver Reed, Proximo, passed away from a heart attack during filming and the movie was dedicated in his memory Crowe sustained several injuries during filming and almost died as a direct result of them. During the fight with the Tigris Of Gaul, the tiger that attacks Maximus almost killed Crowe.

I found Joaquin Phoenix really changed after filming this in a positive way. The loss of his older brother River was obviously devastating and I remember for years Joaquin struggling personally. Then when Gladiator released and all the interviews were happening you could see such a strong bond between him and Russell Crowe who he kept calling his "brother". He was smiling too in a way I hadn't seen since River's death. I personally think Russell Crowe helped him get through a very rough chapter.

Marcus Aurelius is known today as a Stoic Philosopher Emperor. One of the five good emperors. Was well liked and respected by the people. He was not assassinated in real life and died of natural causes. One of my favorite historical figures of human history. Even by today's standards he would have been better then most leaders today. He had unlimited power and it never corrupted him.

Yes, he did resurrect the swords and sandals. I like the soundtrack of the shouting Germans that was used. It originally was the shouting of Zulus from the movie " Zulu ". It's like two war movies for the price of one. Scott always did consider his audiences as " dumb asses ". He attempted to prove that once again with his rendition of " Black Hawk Down ".

‘Burning hate for a character’ is a reaction that is pretty universal for ‘Commodus’. It is should be viewed as a outstanding endorsement of the the job that the screenplay writers, Ridley Scott and of course, Joaquin Phoenix done with the character. His onscreen presence sees a spoilt narcissist psychopath that exudes a twisted and sick bent. You can feel it as a watcher and it is unnerving. His end is as pathetic as his life lived in fear. What a superb job they done on him👏🏻

One of the things I love about this movie is how it changes the people who are watching it. Centane watching the fight in the arena in North Africa: "Is this entertainment? This is so brutal!" Centane watching the fight in the Colosseum: "Woo!" Against our will, we end up being like the Romans.

@coolgareth101 - it is not much different now, especially in US, in some of the aspect of Roman Empire: 1. Marcus Aurelius was quite observant in his Meditations (recommended read), but plenty of other main philosophers before his time too, also regarding the fate of any empire 2. Nothing has change regarding Roman approach of "bread and circuses" - so as long as you keep people entertained (plenty on TV regarding that, especially sport - sort of like old games at the Coloseum), plus give them an "option" to have enough food (keep them feed), and give them a roof over their heads? Yeah, they are not gonna revolt, and rich will gets richer, and poor will gets poorer.

In defense to some of those reactors, they need to "prattle on" due to issues with copyright. They need to be commenting or they are just watching and will get that vid banned. There is a ratio of commenting and watching they need to maintain. There are of course reactors that take it beyond that and hard to watch.

"Was this all because he said 'No'?! " Commodus sees Maximus as a threat to his rule, either as a claimant to the throne or the leader of a rebellion (or both), so Maximus must die. His wife and child are killed as a message to others who might consider doing the same, as well as to ensure that they won't serve as a rallying point for a future rebellion.

For being self-taught, your English is amazingly good! It's def my native language, but I hear from many learning it that it is one of the hardest to learn. So, you're doing great from what I can tell! Just wanted to say that. Working on Japanese myself, and I get the feeling that's about as hard as English. lol And also, one of my favorite movies ever right here, and has been since I was 18 (37 now). I could watch this on repeat, and still shed a tear. So many awesome moments and themes. Never get tired of seeing people experience this one. When people request "Epic", this is always a recommendation from me. Edit: A lot of these moments you were confused or put--off by had deeper meanings to them. Like the pep-talk in the back room before the fight, the big guy was trying to inspire the scribe to fight for his life. He wasn't trying to brag about his ability at all. Otherwise, the scribe would just die without ever trying. And I know some of these horrible moments are hard to watch, but many of them happened, or moments like them. It's good to know what evil people behave like, so as to be aware of it. And also the reality of the time period. It also makes a story feel far more real, and immersive. I think when art represents these things well, it is more valuable than just pure entertainment. I find this film has a good balance of life lessons, morals, history, and entertainment. Not only lots to have fun watching here, but lots to learn from. Just thought I'd prep you for the second watch so you can catch these details (and I know you will). I must've seen this 50+ times myself by now. :p

19:20 - it's another old remedy for preventing wound infection. Macerated bread is a good growth medium for penicillin-producing mold - the mold will grow from airborne spores on its own, but the "salve" was also "seeded" by adding spider webs. Spider silk has no specific antiseptic function, but sticky spider threads work as natural "air filter"; there's lot of mold spores stuck to them.

Fun fact: When Lucius asks him about his horses, Maximus says their names are Argento and Scato. That's apparently referring to Silver and Trigger. Two famous horses from the Lone Ranger and Roy Rodgers. LOL (BTW, the sub-Reddit about Scato/Scatto/Scarto is CRAZY!!)

14:18 cuts especially deep because his father, instead of acknowledging his son’s virtues, insists that he’s still faulty. “Your faults as a son are my failure as a father.” Sounds like a compassionate statement but is actually cruel.

I'm glad you are quit. You absorb a scene and listen to the dialog. Far to many channels talk way too much. Usually over key parts of a film, and becoming lost on what is going on. We as viewers, imo, watch reactors because it's like watching a film with a familiar face, a friend who we get to see share all the emotions we had as first time viewers. The Commodus/Ceaser scene is fricken movie magic! It’s when the screenplay and editing meets PERFECTION. I feel like more people than we’d like to think needs to have that level of realness with their parents 😅… minus the un-aliving.

Absolute masterpiece of a film and just flawless, there really isn’t anything wrong with this film. It really is one of the greatest films ever made period. Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix performances were incredible and they both gave us imo two of the best movie hero and villains ever respectfully. I think my 3 favourite parts of the film is when Maximus reveals himself which gives me goosebumps, when he defeats and kills Commodus and when he finally walks towards and goes to his wife and son, I mean that scene just breaks me everytime and I’m a grown ass man, it’s just so well done and very emotional

It's a great way to show a character story. Some movies are rags to riches. Maximus already started on top, and basically approved for being an emperor! They started him out in the film as highly respected and a great, honorable general and the rest of the movie shows us why he got to that position.

This movie is one of my top ten. Let's give it up to Crowe and the other main character actors they did such a great job. But, i have to give a special acknowledgment to Joaquin Phoenix. I've never hated a character so much in all my.... you know. Just a great actor and playing this character, with such depth, must have taken a piece of his soul. ❤❤❤ Thanks for watching, Kam. When the DVD for this movie came out, I watched it at least once a week. Not just for the story but for Hans Zimmer's tremendous effort with the soundtrack. Performances made us feel exactly how we should for these characters. Marcus and Commodus were real. They ruled jointly for years. Commodus was a large man. His true father is rumored to have been a gladiator, and he did have a love of the "games." Eventually, as wasn't uncommon, he was dispatched by his guards. This version of the story is much better than THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, 1964. The 64 model did have a great cast, but just not this impact.

Aye, Commodus was poisoned by his mistress Marcia, who was on a list she found of people he intended to execute. However, he vomited up the poison & his wrestling partner Narcissus was despatched to strangle him in his bath as he recovered. No return to a republic as suggested in the movie though, instead the anarchy of the Year of the Five Emperors ensued.

3:02 ....."How the people even made props like that"..... Latex and make up..... I used to work in theatre, doing the make up, and did similar stuff..... never a severed head, but scars, aging, de-aging, once I've even made the make up for a face rip off with a Terminator make up underneath... It was cheap, but looked so damm good.......

The reason she kissed Commodus' hand after slapping him was to protect her son. She slapped him before kissing his hand because once acknowledging his rule, the slap would have been treason. It was the only way she could freely express her outrage without endangering her son's life.

There is no such thing as ugly crying. Crying opens up a person's inside. And if that inside is beautiful, how can the crying be ugly? 😊 Love that movie, loved your reaction. And I've never seen that extended edition or directors cut or whatever, but there were some scenes I definitely didn't know from the good old DVD I have of this movie. And it's kinda funny that Spanish and Norwegian are the two languages I learn on duolingo at the moment. One because my favourite band is from Mexico and I want to at least have a general idea of what's going on in their social media posts and the other because Norway is just jawdroppingly beautiful and I want to visit as often as I can (afford it...) Just so you can understand why the scene where they first see the colosseum, was so revolutionary at that point in time. It was actually the first time people who saw the film, saw the collosseum as it stood back in the day. Thanks to CGI becoming also revolutionary then too. Was a big deal to many! Besides being a fantastic movie.

Correct. Had to buy the DVD to see these extra scenes. But the movie experience will always be superior to watching it at home. With the caveat that some people have really great home theaters, of course. But that's certainly not a majority.

Great movie. This movie has one of my favorite quotes "I don't pretend to be a man of the people but I do try to be a man for the people" by Gracchus. You know the actor who play Gracchus played Claudius the emperor that is mention in the movie in a great mini series I, Claudius. Other great Russell Crowe movies you should see is A Beautiful Mind, L.A. Confidential ,The Next Three Days. Other great period movies are Rob Roi 1995 with Liam Nissan and The Count of Monte Cristo 2002

Great film, a modern epic imo. Excellent casting, cinematography, & what a score! [If you want more period films might I recommend “Ben Hur” (1959 version), “Spartacus”, “Cleopatra”, “The Kingdom of Heaven”, “Troy”, “The Last of the Mohicans”, & “The Count of Monte Cristo” (2002).]. Hope you will entertain this list, I think you would enjoy them immensely. And btw, no apologies for your English, it is better than most people I know.

I love how Gaius prediction comes true. That execution scene with Quintus turned his friend into an enemy. Then when he called for help and a sword, Quintus took his opportunity. I also love the detail of, the emperor was just killed in the arena, but the praetorians, and everyone just leave his body in the sand while they honor Maximus with a procession. Such a great detail to show just how many enemies he made for himself.

If you want to see an incredible performance by British actor Oliver Reed. Who played Proximo in this movie. Some 30 years or roughly that before this. Check out the movie Ten Little Indians. It's a suspense thriller. Which stars a few other big name actors of the day. The movie came out around 1973 or so. Again it's a suspenseful who done it. Just superb acting all around. Especially of course by Oliver Reed. Take care and be well.

This is hands down Joaquin Phoenix's best performance. The acting from everyone is phenomenal though. Also, fun fact: During the scene where Maximas says "Are you not entertained?" if you look at the edge of the screen part of the camera crew is left in frame. It's a notorious film production blunder in cinema.
