Wow ... glad I came across this!! .. I was an extra in this film and so proud to say so! I spent 8 weeks on set with many other extras playing soldiers and getting paid for it. £220.00 Irish pounds was our weekly wage, we were paid of the Reserve Defence Forces, Navy section which were recruited to be extras in the film. That hill at 25:40 in your reel we marched up and down there 4 times each day, the first few weeks were at the top of the hill practicing as a group to march in formation to get that wide angle shot of thousands of English troops facing down the hill. In reality that we were only about 400 in total but were later told that a special camera was used during filming to double the amount so it looked like a huge force facing the Scots. At the bottom of this hill is where the we also played the Scots facing the English force with shilterns, so in fact in the movie we were facing our selves! The speech shot took a while to shoots as the horse that Mel Gibson was on didn't cooperate on a few occasions and so had to be reshot over n over! When the horses came towards was a scary sight, we practiced for days getting this right, as we stood in lines as the horses ran at full speed towards us in between the lines of Scots to make it look like we were being trampled. The scene where some English soldiers were knocked off their horses was coordinated by Mick Rodgers, Gibson's stunt double and of Terminator fame, fake foam horses were use and some on electric tracks with stunt men on top, amazing skills. A select few were picked to be Irish also in the last battle where we faced Long Shanks troops, extra extras were brought in for this scene and they can be easily spotted in the film as they wore the brighter colors. I was lucky to be the very first person shown in the panned clip of the Irish soldiers before the battle started!! Again we attacked ourselves as this scene was split and done similar to the first battle. Finally about a dozen of us were picked to be assassins' to kill Wallace when he was knocked off his horse by de Bruce, we spent 3 days in total filming that part, running back n forth until the producers were happy with what they got. I'm the guy right of screen with no helmet in black chainmail outfit! To say we were part of this film is something that no one can take away from the group that travelled to be film stars in the 90's to see first hand how the long process of making a film and the amount of effort that goes into it before you see it on a cinema screen is amazing, memories that will live on :) My compliments for all the hard work that you done to show the many locations from the film xxxx

When Long Shanks walks down the stairs to talk with his captains and to declare "Prima Nocte", there are two guards either side of the stairs. The guy on the left is my friend Johnny from Bray. When the scouting team were looking for additional extras, they went through some of the villages and my mate was sitting having a beer and put his hand up!

I was in the movie when I was a teenager.I was a member of the FCA in Ireland it’s similar to the army cadets. The studio needed about 2000 people to film the battle scenes We were filming for about a month in the Curragh Camp in Kildare.

That's super cool!. Something to remember for the rest of you life!.. I watched the movie at least a dozen times, I couldn't imagine how many more if I was actually in it haha. Even though it may not be historically accurate, it is my heritage and I get a weird nostalgic sense of "home" when I watch the movie... even though I've never been there. My great grandmother was born there. Loved listening to her accent 😂 always put a smile on my face.

Just watching your video on Braveheart and you mentioned that where you were were walking 25.32 minutes in, that the extras would have been Infront and behind you, I was one of those extras for a few weeks, when we came to wardrobe in the mornings you were told what costume to put on, sometimes you were a scot and sometimes you were english, When Mel Gibson gave his speach and the scots were cheering him, a lot of us were shouting "where is the bar" lol, If you see the movie you'll know...., I still have my set pass and a few pictures from a camera, a lot of guys were caught with cameras and had them confiscated, I was also an extra in Saving Private Ryan, many of those extras were military also, great times

I was in brave heart as a member of athe reserve defence forces. Spent two weeks on set as an extra in the battle of Falkirk and battle of sterling. We stayed at the curragh camp. Food was terrible but what am experience. Mel Gibson was a gent but meeting Patrick McGoohan was my highlight. Thanks for the video because I couldn't have found both those locations if I tried. Must go back and visit soon.

What food did you get? Lol
@colinclarke3730 Жыл бұрын
@@Sid_Scot as it was the defence forces feeding us it was terrible. Generally whatever they could get into one pot. We didn't have the top class catering the rest of the cast and crew got. We couldn't say anything because we were active soldiers at the time so we'd protest by collecting our food and proceeding to the nearest bin and dumping it straight in. I don't recall it getting us anywhere though.

I met Mel Gibson when he was filming Hamlet at Dunnottar castle Aberdeenshire. They had a huge replica built for the actors scenes, and as you walked behind it was actually made of plaster and held with scaffold. Mel Gibson came over to chat during a break for a coffee and cigarette. We talked about the history of the castle and he said it was never captured, that's when I told him William Wallace captured it on his way to liberate Aberdeen from the English. Five years later he directed and starred in Braveheart.

The shots are all lined up so well. I appreciate the amount of effort it took. great job. Btw the reason why so many old buildings have no roof in Ireland is because when tax for land was calculated, it was calculated based on number of buildings. So if a building had no roof, it wasn't considered in the tax calculations for the land. Also a few things about Castles in Ireland. Many of them are owned by the state and maintained by the OPW (Office of Public works). These are who you want to contact if you wish to gain access to a castle that is surrounded by private land. Often they will give you the caretakers contact number and many are happy to accommodate if you ask nicely. A local caretaker here gave me the keys to a local castle to explore the insides properly. But it certainly is an issue having no right of access for the public. The state owns the castle and I think 10 feet radius around the castles. But we need to find a solution for a right of access and we just don't unfortunately. I think Scotland has a right to roam law, Ireland doesn't.

It’s Mel’s stunt double, Mic Rodgers, who was also the Second Unit Director & Stunt Coordinator on the picture. The helicopter dropped him off & was circling around to film when some poor German hiker came up the path, saw Mic and thought he saw a Scottish ghost. Mic had the guy hide back down the path so they could get the shot. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
