I was a film extra in Saving Private Ryan and worked in the Thame Park parts. It was the summer of 1997 and I was a university student on my summer break. It was quite an experience and surprisingly well paid. Thame Park was in a poor state as the owner was apparently in prison for financial misdemeanors and the big house had been ransacked of original features (like fireplaces etc). I was surprised how fat Tom Hanks looked and not like a typical WW2 soldier. He was a bit stand offish whereas the other actors were friendly and chatted to us plebs during the breaks. I even sat opposite Spielberg in the meal tent once - he said our gory make-up was starting to ruin his appetite! Ha ha.... One thing you don't appreciate when watching the film is how big the army of luvvies there were fussing over things but generally doing nothing of use and sponging off the film makers. They kept talking about the upcoming "rap party" and how marvellous it was going to be. I didn't get an invite 😅 I played a dead GI in the foreground when the team line up along the hedge line at the foot of the radar station - it's the only scene where I know I can spot me (there were lots of film extras btw): Dropped pin maps.app.goo.gl/B9nVqsA8MFPSnWcW8

Always a lot of luvvies in film crews hanging about the set. Their jobs are so specialised they have nothing to do most of the time, but when needed they might be forced to work for 12 hours straight throughout the night. Done a bit of film work myself, mainly as an extra (which was great fun) but also on the crew (not my cup of tea at all).

I Was a security officer at the Hatfield site, I was 18 at the time. Saw the whole french village set, one one side it looked like a bombed out 1940's town, on the other it was scaffolding and hardboard. some of the tanks used were just land rovers with a tank kit shell placed over the top of it. This was a money saving tactic. The River under the bridge was literally only 2 feet deep, also, at the time, The Dreamworks crew sent flyers out to all the residents letting them know that they would be hearing a lot of explosions and gunfire and not to panic or call the police, as they were filming. This kind of backfired because half the town turned up to see if they could see what was going on.
@SC-ew2fc Жыл бұрын
I lived in the area as a kid and remember seeing ww2 era planes fly over my house towards the set. Also remember driving to the Galleria and seeing the French town set on fire and full of smoke during their filming. Was very cool seeing the film when it came out and recognising the set

Great work lining up the shots at Ballinesker beach. I'm from near enough that area, and you've got to remember that those cliffs are constantly being eroded by the sea so they won't look exactly like they did 25 odd years ago, which doubly shows what a great job you did, fair play. He said he knew then this was for keeps, with no going back...... My dad sadly passed away in 1985, a victim of cancer.

Great video, at this time i worked for the local police in Hatfield and the British Aerospace site was part of our patrol area, we went in many times and got tours of the village and the props departments and were allowed to eat in their 24hr canteen too. On one day we watched a scene being practised and Spielberg turned round after and asked one of his assistants why are the cops here. It was eye opening on the magic of the movies, i will never forget the fake blown up horse it looked way too real

Great work as always. I actually was searching for the french town set location at Hatfield a couple of months back, and cross referenced an area with behind the scenes footage. You can line up a certain tree line area, and my finding was, that the exact area is available to visit. Its open fields with paths away from the old airfield buildings and new estate.
@GoingtotheMovies2 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is awesome! I was really curious to know what exactly was different as far as landscape. Hopefully, next time I'm in England I can stop by there. Is it true that the ditch is still there?
@aboutface79612 жыл бұрын
@@GoingtotheMovies Ahh, sorry you missed it and headed home. I don't know about the ditch as I haven't physically gone there 'yet (but will next time im over). if you go to timestamp 5:46 on kzbin.info/www/bejne/gl65aJuQr755hpI. you can match this tree line and field and back ground building in the far distance on 3d google maps, as it pans right. This long white building is: Frobisher Way, Hatfield AL10 9TR, UK. The set in my opinion was here: 51.7633955221441, -0.26147685100706414. so is quite accessible, as i believe that trail is a public hike trail. But nowhere have i seen anyone mark the exact spot. On the map you cant make out a ditch, but if you were there at the magic hour, the shadows would probably make it stand out. On a sidenote. its just a few miles from Stanley Kubrick's house 'Childwickbury'. which hold events and farmers markets sometimes. and where the director is laid to rest in the garden. Kubrick and Spielberg were friends, so possibly Stanley may have visited the set.

I do really wish you'd made it to Hatfield, though as I've often wondered what the area there looks like today. I know the Private Ryan set was bulldozed over and later used for Band of Brothers, and again bulldozed after that was done, but what's there now?

There areas in England called public footpaths or public bridleways sign posted with a wooden sign post which has an arrow pointing which direction to go in. Cleethorpes Beach in North East Lincolnshire (the only beach resort on the river Humber) was one location picked for saving private ryan but they instead chose Ireland. It is a track not a driveway. Bruce Crompton from Combat Dealers on Discovery Channel some of his vehicles appeared in saving private ryan including a Kettenkrad, some of his vehicles also appeared in other films including Fury also tanks from Bovington Tank Museum also appeared in Fury. Memphis Belle was filmed at the former RAF Binbrook in Lincolnshire in 1990, Sally B a B17 (based at RAF Duxford now part of The Imperial War Museum it has a number of hangers including the American air museum) played the Memphis Belle towards the end of the film.
