The SCARLET MACAWS in Costa Rica are certainly making a successful comeback. We hear them flying over our house in the jungle with their raucous calls more than we see them. As a bird breeder, rescuer and rehabilitator I can throughly say those macaws were very healthy, the chop, ie food they gave them is very healthy. Bird owners or people thinking about getting birds make sure you do your research and know what food is healthy. For example fruits veggies and small amounts of seeds. A full seed diet is unhealthy and will shorten your birds lifespan if you do a straight seed diet their whole lives

I have a Milla gold macaw he screams he is loud I get why most people probably don’t have a Macaw as a pet. macaws are also very messy and they’re probably a little bit dangerous to when I was a baby my macaw bit my face but I am ok now and I hope the scarlet macaws can thrive again in the wild for many years to come.

I am an Avian/exotics Veterinarian and something important I didn't hear them say was... Macaws have a closed Trachea, unlike humans who have an open Trachea. This means the cartilage rings in their trachea are all encompassing, not just mostly like in humans. This means that it is impossible to strangle a Macaw, unless a large amount of pressure is put on the trachea, enough to crush it. This is why farmers pick up chickens by either the neck or feet. In a bird, handling them around their neck for restraint is necessary. Birds have air sacs instead of lungs, when pressure is applied to their chest they are unable to expand those air sacs and will suffocate quite quickly. Hold their neck while supporting the base of their beak with your index finger and thumb, hold one wing into your chest and your wrist and forearm of the arm supporting their neck and beak to prevent them from flapping their outer facing wing. Then use your other hand to hold their ankles in place. Watch for beak and talons!

I have a lovebird and we try to outstubborn each other when he tries to bite me. It's not often, but I don't flinch away. Lovebirds have bigger beaks than budgie, but I can't say anything about bite force. I don't remember being bitten by one ever. Anyway, once he found out that it doesn't work, he doesn't really bite me anymore. I also use a spray bottle if he feels especially petty and doesn't listen to verbal commands. (I don't spray it, but holding it is warning enough)

@Wattle I did mention that I don't spray it. It just behaves when I hold it. It doesn't even fear it and regularly uses it as a perch next to my laptop. It's filled with water and I use it to clean the poop

Oooo boy, as someone who owns an eclectus, I can confirm that parrot beaks can be *very* painful! Also, good thing you didn’t get bitten be that specific one, as the females are often a more aggressive! Almost every bite I’ve received from my parrots were from the females, and no matter how small the bird, they were always *bad* bites.

I believe any species of parrot, whether it is a budgie or cockatiel or else, must not been caught by the humans to sell them and keep them at homes. They must have rights to live in their natural ecosystem freely, and fly independently.

Many of the birds that people have as pets were born in captivity and would not survive in the wild, as a blue and gold macaw owner I can tell you clumsy 20 year old wouldn't but she's free to fly and loves every minute of her life!
