Man, you missed out when these games were out in the Arcade decades ago. Full set with the whole cockpit and double joysticks like you're in the mech. The first time I saw this game as a kid made me go ," O____O Holy shit. Is this a Gundam game?? Whatever it is, I HAVE to play this" LOL

Try using the Japanese name of the title of Operation Moongate when searching on Wikipedia, it gives the full details of how VRs were developed and why you had to go to the moon or even what Z-Gradt was. Whole franchise has a LOT of lore to dig through. For instance: Tangram (Main reason why the 2nd game happened) was developed by the creator of Fei-Yen to act as a last ditch resort against Daimon (Main antagonist of MARZ: Aggregate collective of precursor race's thoughts)
