Brazil landslides and massive flooding kills dozens | BBC News

Dozens of people have died after heavy rain triggered flooding and landslides in Brazil’s southernmost state.
According to officials, 55 people are confirmed to have died, with another 74 missing in Rio Grande do Sul.
Nearly 25,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes since the storms began last Saturday, and at least half a million people have been left without power and clean water.
More than half of the 497 cities in the state have been affected by the storms, with roads and bridges destroyed in several areas.

@danilom3166 DeSantis needs to be helping to get insurance companies to stop extorting the homeowners. I don't even live near a body of water. We built our house in 1997 one foot above the road. We spent $16,000 on dirt. The only bright spot is that it's on 2 acres in an upscale wooded lot community and is worth three times what I paid for it. My husband passed in 2004 at age 42 from leukemia. I paid the house off with most of the life insurance. With having to pay for pool cleaners, tree cutters, and yard maintenance, it is expensive for me to keep. I have been living with my boyfriend of 13 years since December 2015. It's worth $800,000, and home buyers are always texting and calling me and have the desire to purchase the home. I am very attached to this house but he will never live there. It was my marital home, and he bought one in 2016 for us. In September of 2022, he bought a 55-foot Benetaux sailboat that we travel in with our 2 American Eskimo dogs and our cat. We have too much stuff. 2 houses, 2 trucks, 1 SUV , a pool that needs constant money put into repairs, and 2 sailboats. He has been trying to sell the 27-foot sailboat that he learned to sail on during COVID19. We want a simpler life with money in the bank to finance our excursions and retirement. Needless to say that all these things are well insured.The capital gains tax would kill me if I sell it. I'm 58 and retired. He owns his own construction company and just takes the jobs that he wants and fits into our travel plans. You can only make $200,000 on your house when you sell it. The rest is heavily taxed. The value keeps going up, but so do the headaches. I have many health conditions, and I can't maintain like I used to. He wants me to sell it and put the money away.

If you analyze previous years consecutively, we had massive rain disasters in Brazil, but these floods in Rio Grande do Sul are historic, there are no precedents. It's an entire state hit by tragedy. I'm here in Porto Alegre, capital of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The area of the dilluvium is comparable to the area of the whole Great Britain. Most of this area was completely destroyed by the massive rains (800mm in 48 hours) and floods. Most of the local population (the State has 11 million inhabs.) has lost everything and now faces the problems of having no potable water or food to survive. Escaped from Porto Alegre (Brazil) while the floods were at their peak, and it was still raining as I drove near the ocean. Had to carefully plan out a route back to my city that basically had me making an 'U' all across the state. I had to call gas stations as I planned my route to make sure there was any gasoline at all when I got there... Because there was simply not enough supply of anything getting out of the harbor and into the countryside due to the floods. Still isn't, to say the truth, a lot of bridges collapsed. A terrible situation, and I know a lot of people who lost everything they worked for all their lives. I had to travel two entire days and sleep in my car to get back home, but I had a home to go back to. I was one of the lucky ones.

Well, they keep cutting down the rainforest. Trees soak up their own weight in water when there is a storm, and in hot weather, the heat squeezes the water out providing water for wildlife and agriculture when there is no rainfall. Trees are nature's natural dam and are much more efficient than man made dams. So much flooding is man made - man keeps cutting down the trees!

Rio Grande do Sul is literally on the opposite side of the country to the rainforest and has its main ecosystem as the pampas grasslands. Nothing to do with deforestation.
