Papiamento started as a portuguese creole but then it was "castillianized"

Slaves from brazil came here and mixed with the afrikaners and spanish, dutch and english people and so they created papiamento plus it was influenced alot by outsiders the past 150 years

The comparison should have been done with Spanish too, because it looks far more like it.

I wouldn't say so. There are many words of clear Spanish influence. But the influence of Portuguese is so striking in a lot of features of it. Like using "bo" to say "you" (from Portuguese "você"). The way many words end in "u" (which is exactly how end of word "o" is pronounced in Portuguese). The same thing with words ending in "i" (which are written with "e" in Portuguese but still pronounced like "i"). And, of course, a lot of vocabulary derives clearly from Portuguese. And then there are many words which just happen to be too similar in Portuguese and Spanish, so there's no way to say from which language it came

As a Papiamento speaker, I think Spanish would be the closer comparison esp if you do the Aruban dialect. It may have base developed from Portuguese creole but it’s been influenced by Spanish a LOT too so
@otaviogama603

I think it's closer to Portuguese, if you go to Guinea-Bissau or Cape Verde. It was influenced by the Spanish because of its proximity to Venezuela and Colombia

Maybe that is because you are bilingual in spanish and papiamento. It's like a catalan speaker person, catalan is closer to french but they are bilingual in spanish so everyone thinks it is more related to spanish.

I think that it would be more interesting to compare it with other creole languages like Cabo Verde's creole. I have a friend from Aruba and she teach me some papiamento. I speak spanish and portuguese as native languages and the structure and a lot of vocabulary comes clearly from portuguese, it was so easy to learn it. For example the word "na" ("in" in english), "ainda" (yet) or "laga" (leave) same in portuguese, in spanish is "en", "aún" and "dejar". Also I have read a book (Jean Aitchison: Language Change ¿Progress or Decay? ) about linguistics and seems like every creole language was developed from an ancient African creole language based on portuguese ( Portugal was the first colonial empire) so other european empires also adopted that "pidgin" or creole language in their colonizations.

Andy runs the video of Papiamento with Spanish, you put it on Spanish playlists, they don't mix with Portuguese, they are not the same languages and they are not from the same subfamily. The Papiamento video with Brazilian Portuguese expands, carries out the suggestions of other linguists here your videos will be more technical and beautiful, then sis includes in this beautiful video the Angolan and Mozambican Portuguese, the Macanese Timorese Portuguese, the pure Uruguayan Portuguese dialect and the Macanese Portuguese. Do not listen to the layman or the envious, liars and bullies, they just want to harm and stifle the beauty of your channel, listen to people who are experts in the dear language that your work will help millions of people in the most scientific and social sense imaginable. Darling, stay with God and prosper the work of your hands 🧤 kisses on ❤️💋🌹🤗🍻
