Portuguese is not a must to visit Brazil. On my first trip I had a language book and tape recordings that I read and listened to during the day and later on I would go out and try some of the phrases. For a trip of only two weeks or less it's probably not worth the trouble. But I stayed two months and studied my book and tape as I went along. I could speak at a tourist level (order food, etc.). In reality, I should have taken lessons while I was down there. I would have been twice as good after the two months. For my friends that are fluent, it took them two years of living down there to get to that point.

50% of Brazilians could be considered poor and they live in favela like areas. I would call it a middle income country (like Jamaica, Trinidad). Certainly not at the income level of the US or Canada. But wealthier than most African countries, Haiti, India.

Hi, dude ! I'm from Rio. Let me tell you something. Ipanema, Leblon are rich neighborhoods really. However, Rio das Pedras is a favela (a poor area) in Barra da Tijuca. It is not a media class area, for example, where live the most of Rio's population. Some favelas are like small cities where people can find many shops, bakery, hair salon, snack bars, drugstore, evangelic temple... with great prices for people who lives there and it is very good. By the way, you are talking a good Portuguese.

I have figured out where you visited. It's called Rio das Pedras. You are actually still in Rio. The city has a whopping population of over 5 million which makes it as large as L.A. Traffic must have been really slow because it should not have taken that long. My favela tour was to Rochinha which you passed by. It's a very famous favela. It's a much tougher hood but my guide had permission from the big guys to bring me there. It was scary but fun. There was a large outdoor funk party of 10k or so people when I was there. Another thing is that Pedras is not far from Tijuca which is a fav or mine. Tijuca has a nice beach vibe like Copa but with hardly any tourist. It's a middle to upper middle class area. I once got invited to a party there at 6 million dollar condominium with a huge rooftop pool and deck overlooking the beach. I was blown away! I would suggest that you visit Tijuca beach area as well as the Tijuca shopping mall. I think that you will be impressed ...

bro, thank you so much, as a social activist its wooooooonderful to see people not afraid of us, that always bothered me, even living in the us for 2 years, mexico couple months, and been to portugal and nortj africa in my work once a year or so, thank u sooo much bro... keep exploring.. i live in the south santa catarina, i live in the capital city florianopolis, which is an island,the magic island we call.. best surf.. best beach.. and there are many many favelas or quebradas we call it, but not necessarily in the hills in mini-cities.. we have those, but less than half only, most are in a straight street neihbourhood... in the beach they sell but completely peaceful, maybe 1 or 2 guys from the 15, 20, around the beaach, that has something hiding, maybe at home even.. and thats it.. thats the most common tho.. we do really have some hellholes even i dont go, hills or areas around the neighboorhoods in the bridges... and im someone born in quebrada you know.... its a fukin island.. fishermen here are a social group with almost political influence at the beach... its different, peaceful, good vibes, there is of course crimes and violence, but it is stricly controlled both by the crime and the police, this being the 6th biggest tour point in brazil, 1st in the south..

Not all favelas are dangerous. Even some Brazilians believe that myth. My girlie down there refused to visit or even stop in a favela. It's ironic but I ended up visiting the favela more times than she ever did. There are some favelas that a person can even visit on their own but a guide is recommended for sure. Favelas are very similar to our hoods in the U.S. People from their are used to it and tend to like it. Outsiders tend to be afraid. I would say the majority of Brazilians (like Americans) have a bad image of the favelas (hoods). Some favelas are actually former communities for escaped slaves back in the 1800s. These communities were known as "Quilombos" back then.

Favelas are nothing like hoods in the US. For one Americans live segregated. Brazilians in favelas live under the laws set by drug traffickers or militiaa that control them. I dont know one city in USA that has 2000 police killings of civilians per year like Rio.

So can the U.S. To be honest I visited both big cities and small towns in Brazil. To me the safety level was about the same as back in the U.S. .... Now grant you I have lived in Chicago, Philadelphia and elsewhere. I have hung out in gang infested areas in Texas and California as well as NYC Harlem, Brooklyn, Bronx. Wash DC, Bmore ... I had two friends move from Phila after living their 20 plus years to Atlanta. Both were killed in robbery attempts after being in ATL for only 2 years. ATL is safer than Philly right? Not for them...

Brother, you have to work on your Portuguese. I hear you speaking a lot of Spanish. After my Spanish got to the intermediate level, I started to study Portuguese. It can be difficult at first, but you'll get used to it. My Spanish is now at the B2 level and my Portuguese is at the B1 level. Brazilians will appreciate you even more. They take pride in their language and culture. Even when your Portuguese improves, it is natural to mistakenly mix up the languages sometimes. Great video! I love meeting people from all walks of life. I grew up in the projects in the Bronx so I would love to go into a favela one day. Some people think I'm crazy but just like the PJ's I'm sure that most of the people are good people, they are just poor as my family was. Be safe.
