THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING THIS! I've been a 1975 fan since the beginning, and I fell in love with TS when folklore came out. Not that I did not respect her as an artist already, but it was definitely more my genre. I believe MH had a huge impact in her music. She was already great, but she sealed it for me with that album.

@@justmejenny7986 Yes. Peter is about Matty. Turns out the 2 have written songs for/about each other for years. In The 1975's "Falling For You" (about Taylor) Matty speaks to falling for a girl that's asking him to grow to her height. In "Peter," Taylor Swift says: "You said you were gonna grow-up & come find me." I think the height referenced in both of their songs is fame related. Matty couldn't deal with the heights of her fame. After a decade, he thought he could, then the "Why's she with him" headlines hit along with the open letters from her fans demanding they break-up... he hadn't grown enough to take the pressures from that kind of fame. Listen to "Falling For You" by the 1975. Then, listen to "Peter".

Why has no one talked about the “front porch light” reference to Matty Healy!! She said that Cardigan was for him when she mouthed “I love you.” It sounds like she’s being considering him again for years?! This album has kinda blown my overall perception of Taylor and her commitment to Joe. I feel kinda conflicted as a 15+ year stan, but I’m sure it’ll grow on me. I just don’t know I can regularly listen to Matty Healy songs… which are all rooted in some level of blind delusion.

Someone mentioned something about flings being more impactful than long term relationships, and I really never realized it until she wrote this album. I’ve been married for 5 years now to a wonderful man. Our relationship is built off really incredible communication and love, and it feels so comfortable and safe. As much as I love him, the songs I would have to write about him would probably bore a lot of people because they’d be too sweet. I’ve also had a lot of flings before him, and to this day I still think about them and cringe. Much more interesting things to say about those uncomfortable relationships. The passion is always there in the beginning, and you always want to make them work, but the red flags are impossible to ignore. Lots of highs and lows and absolutely no stability. I think the lack of Joe in this album shows how much she valued there relationship. He also seems to be an incredibly private person, and she’s probably trying to respect that. I’m not 100% sure though. She also could just not be ready to dissect 6 years of a relationship in one album. Joe’s songs could possibly be a slow trickle through many albums to come?

@@ExDizzle6 I think the "Track 5" on this was almost "enough" for her. Every lyric in that song is so meaningful and impactful. It seems that she almost killed herself to save the relationship ("You say I abandoned the ship but I was going down with it.."). And "how much sad did you think I had?" If you listen to "Chats & Reacts" reaction to this... They talk about her just being like "byeeee boy" and Matty Healy's connection almost being more meaningful, at this point. She was already at the point of fantasizing about him in Guilty as Sin? & Joe was "dreaming" about someone else, too. I think Taylor had mentally checked out years before they actually ended. There's some lyric about the ending being relatively anti-climactic. I think it's because it was a slow death. The album is taking wayyyy longer for me to process than other albums. I haven't even started analyzing the second one haha! Also, I've been married for a long time, too, so I get it.

@@gggttt207 Well she said "this one's for you" about Matty Healy for Cardigan, so I was listening to the album with that song in mind. She says "I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired & you'd be standing in my front porch light. I knew you'd come back to me" in Cardigan. Then, in Fresh Out the Slammer, she talks about her getting out of her long-term "prison" and her first call being to Matty. She says: "All those nights you kept me going Swirled you into all of my poems Now we're at the starting line, I did my time Now pretty baby, I'm running To the house, we still wait up and that porch light gleams To the one who says I'm the girl of his American dreams." It seems she was writing about Matty quite a lot in her folklore/evermore era... which is kinda crazy!

I feel like she explains the relationship timeline with Matty really clearly in Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus… they were super connected when they met at age 24/25, but he had a drug problem and she couldn’t handle it, so she dated other people and he watched from afar but she couldn’t shake the feeling she abandoned him. I think she did love Joe in a different way and tried to make it work, but he was clearly depressed and it seems somewhat controlling since she’s talked about feeling like she was locked in the house in that relationship. And he would never commit. Matty got off heroin in 2018. I’m guessing they started talking again as friends somewhere before folklore (since it seems a LOT of it is about him) and it took her a while to trust him enough and finally let go of the dream of what she had with Joe. Having been in a long term relationship that it took me a long time to let go of, even though (and partly because!! I literally was afraid he would die if I left) my partner had serious issues… I get it. I don’t think it’s fair to judge her from the outside
