A little over 20 years ago, I saw David Gates in concert at an outdoor summer series in NYC. He appeared with just a violinist and I think he played piano and guitar. There may have been one more musician on stage but no drummer. He played all his hits. You could have heard a pin drop in the crowd as he played those delicate, gorgeous melodies. After he finished each one, he got a wild ovation. The songs were stunning and it was a beautiful, memorable night.

Really dig that you react to older songs , especially 70's-80's main stream music. The 70's had some really cool songs . Had two older sisters and got to listen to 70's music as a kid . You realize how good some of that music was till you get older....😎 Actually grew up as a metal head, but like to hear some of the older stuff.

Bread sings a song called “Everything I Own”, which the main singer/songwriter David Gates wrote as a tribute to his dead father. Can bring tears to your eyes! Also check out “If” and “Baby I’m A-Want You”, “Diary”. Also David Gates sang a song called “Goodbye Girl” in his solo career which was a big hit in its day.

Great selection India as it was their first charting single from 1970. David Gates had an uncanny knack of writing what is called 'soft rock' tunes however, I played them over and over and don't get tired of listening to them. Larry Knechtel, their keyboardist/bass player/guitarist from 1971 was a great inclusion. He was part of the 'Wrecking Crew', the unique session musician group that performed on many famous albums. I suggest you look them up. Unfortunately, only David Gates and Robb Royer are still alive yet their music still lives on....so thank you India.

Love your new channel intro! Bread - wow - this is a lovely song. In the 1970s Bread was EVERYWHERE. You could always hear one of their songs on the radio. If you want to buy a CD that's a great, easy to listen to album that you could put on shuffle "Best of Bread" - especially if you mixed it up with another band America, The Eagles - that would be nice. If you like "Make It with You" (US#1), then you're in luck! Bread has a number of other amazingly gentle ballads - mostly from the early 70s. Bread was a gifted live act, but in reality, they were basically the studio project of one guy. David Gates was the singer, guitarist, producer, and arranger so the studio versions are usually rich in detail. I would recommend studio versions over live versions as you continue your musical journey. His other major hits were: "It Don't Matter to Me" (US#10, 1970) "Baby I'm a Want You" (US#3, 1970 - yes, that's the title, lol) "If" (US#4, 1971) "Everything I Own" (US#5, 1972 - later covered in a Reggae style by Ken Boothe and by a solo Boy George after Culture Club broke up in the late 80s) Lost without Your Love" (US#9, 1977)" "The Guitar Man" (US#11, 1972) "Diary", "Sweet Surrender" and "Aubrey" all made it to US#15 on the Billboard Hot100. I also recommend checking out the 1963 Girl Group CLASSIC "Popsicles and Icicles" by The Murmaids. It was David Gates's biggest success before Bread, as a songwriter. If you like the 60s Girl Group sound, I can point you in the direction of other songs along those lines.

It is significant to put the meaning and the double entendre of this song in a bit of “context”. There were several songs about this time during what many people would refer to as the “free love“ era that were either overtly or insinuated temporary sex or love. This one puts it in a very sweet tone. The message is lets make love and see if something more happens. Many other songs from this time frame like Bob Seger: Ramblin Man, Allman Brothers: Ramblin man, Gordon Lightfoot: Carefree Highway, Glen Campbell: Gentle on My Mind, Sammy Johns: Chevy Van, and Really Love to See You Tonight by England Dan and John Ford Coley to name a few. By the early 80s this free love and drugs idea fell out of favor. So as a historical “snap shot” of those times this song fits in that genre and new understanding can be gained through that context. That and several of Breads songs are amazing and he has that really easy and “love sonnet” delivery. Different Drum by Linda Ronstadt or The Worst That Could Happen by Brooklyn Bridge are a couple more.

This soft rock classic is a little saucy. Written by lead singer David Gates, it finds him propositioning a girl with his dulcet tones: And if you're wondering what this song is leading to I want to make it with you It's pretty clear what he means by "make it," although it's certainly ambiguous enough to clear the censors. Released on their second album, this was the first hit for Bread, although David Gates had some previous success as a songwriter, including the #3 US "Popsicles And Icicles" in 1964 for the female trio The Murmaids. They followed it up by rereleasing a song from the previous year, "It Don't Matter To Me," which reached #10. Their most successful songs were more light favorites: "If" and "Baby I'm-A Want You." When group leader David Gates returned home to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where his mother was throwing a big reception party to celebrate the return of the young chart-conquering hero, the newspaper, television and radio press turned up, hoping to play up the whole "local boy does good" PR angle. In a widely circulated interview, Mrs. Gates proudly told the world just how pleased as punch she was with her son's recent success. She then also told them - in complete candor - that she just couldn't understand why he had to call his new hit record, "Naked With You." (Thanks to Kent at Forgotten Hits.) Other artists to record this song include Earth, Wind & Fire, Aretha Franklin and Teddy Pendergrass.

React to “YOU & I (Your The Only Woman)” by Ambrosia, such a great song full of blue eyed soul. Fun fact: Daryl Hall can’t stand the term “Blue Eyed Soul” because he feels soul music is universal and it shouldn’t matter if your white, black, Hispanic, etc. I totally agree.
