Very creative! Perfect winter inticment for vegan sausages indeed.

Hello Jana. Yes, I am in the UK and make bread sauce every year. I usually use a red onion, studded with cloves, salt, ground black pepper, nutmeg and home made breadcrumbs (half wholemeal flour and half white). I use oat milk, which I like. I have not tried with the vegan cream or butter, but I will do so this year, as it looks so smooth and indulgent. Just right for Christmas! PS - I love your Christmas kitchen. It is so bright and beautiful - just like you! xx

That is a very interesting way to get gravy. I think I'd want to whisk it smooth. BTW, I use full fat oat milk for our Southern gravies. Thick and creamy.

Thank you for sharing what you use! I love gravy and have been trying to put together as many different types of recipes as possible and this helps :)

I don’t think you can whisk it smooth. The lumps are the bread crumbs. Just “process” them smaller.

This is a new one for me too, but it makes total sense. I often add bread to thicken velouté as well as potage soup. Love the method you showed using two plates as a press!

Bread sauce is my favourite and in the olden days as a meat eater it was a very important part of the Christmas meal and the sandwiches next day. Bread sauce , stuffing and apple sauce ( NOT American cranberry sauce ) and of course it was turkey or goose . Since being vegan the only part I don’t miss is the meat. I make all the other stuff just like before. BUT Chef 👩🍳 your breadcrumbs are too big, you need a bread crumb not a bread chunk my dear ! Process the bread more and it will make the sauce even more delicious. Thanks for great programmes with educational and helpful content. You are a gift to the vegan community. Have a great Christmas. From an agéd UK vegan. 🙏

Bread sauce is so traditional in my English household. We often have it with our Sunday roast. Serving this alongside creamed spinach works well 😉 I always strain the onion and peppercorns from the milk then reintroduce just the onion back in, sliced thinly, before I add in the breadcrumbs. I had never considered adding nutritional yeast, it doesn't appeal to me as I've only cooked it the same way for 45 years.

Wow, that looks good. Never heard of it but anxious to try it !! Do you flip the onions over in the cooking process and when you said you had it over Vegan sausage, was the sausage a homemade sausage? I'm not sure if you ever heard of Bob Evans brand pork sausage, but boy do I miss eating that. I wish I knew of a Vegan version of that sausage. Do you know of one? Thanks again lovely Lady !!

I have had bread sauce once, many years ago before I even became a vegetarian, with a roast beef dish. I thought it was weird. But my tastes have changed a lot since becoming a vegan, so I'm willing to give this a shot to accompany seitan roast : ) ThanksForPosting!

Hi Jana! So pleased you've introduced this sauce to your viewers. I make this every year, but with a lot less cloves, I tear my bread rather than breadcrumbs, and prefer those delicious soaked bits of bread, which you beat down with a wooden spoon, as this is the traditional way in our family. If anyone wants the recipe I based ours on, to adapt if you want please shout I'll take a photo and share 😊 enjoy for all those new to breadsauce! Yum!!! Xx

As a Briton I associated it so strongly with roast chicken that I have not eaten it or made it for nearly forty years when I became vegetarian I don't really remember the taste of it so perhaps it is time to try your vegan version.

My grandmother came from London, England, I live in New England (USA) - never heard of bread sauce - love the way you enjoy the food you make and love in the pot - you are absolutely precious!! Merry Christmas!!! PS Started to make this, the nutmeg in the directions is missing, no problemo (yep, that is all the Spanish I know), got to watch your beautiful face to see where it went in, and am going to put the nutritional yeast in at the end cause I read somewhere that cooking it kills the Vitamin B - so if it comes out badly, so blaming myself!!! OMG just started to boil and went to put the cover on - the aroma is to die for!!! Definitely not waiting for this batch to sit overnight!!!!! Yep, that was way, way to much info - apologies

😂 The “wee lumps” are what makes it “bread sauce” instead of gravy (made with flour instead). But, recipes are for inspiration, and Chef Jana definitely inspires us!

Most American Grandmas would cringe at this. Silky gravy = a good cook. I get why it's lumpy, but........ And I'm with you on the coconut milk, and coconut oil too! I only use it for a curry or thai dish. Just over so much coconut!
@jetlagsenior84913 жыл бұрын
Nooo! don't remove onion! Remove cloves then blend into the milk, then add a lot more bread crumbs. Bread sauce in our house is a very thick consistency, more like mash potato not a gravy. Love it!
