This is near the top of the list of our most enjoyed hikes in New South Wales, Australia. Warrumbungle National Park is a beautiful place with a stunning volcanic landscape. Large rock formations tower over the forest below, left behind after millions of years of erosion of a shield volcano that was active across the area 13-18 million years ago. The Grand High Tops circuit is a 14.5km hiking trail through the national park with a steep ascent up towards the Grand High Tops providing stunning views the entire way and 360-degree views of the national park at the top. The trail is a mixture of brick walkway, stairs, and some loose rock and rock scrambling near the top.
We decided to complete the entire circuit hiking trail without ascending to the top of Bluff Mountain (a side trail). This would add only an additional 2km but 2 hours in duration due to the climb. Nonetheless, the views were spectacular along the main hiking trail. We saw a variety of birds such as Crimson rosellas, cockatoos, Blue fairy wrens, and many other small birds. We also spotted a male Eastern grey kangaroo and a Lace monitor (Goanna). Be sure to take 3 litres or more of water with you especially in hot weather and sturdy shoes are essential to prevent injury particularly along the top of the circuit trail.
Enjoy the footage!
