“Can a food addict healthily have joy in eating and around their food? Absolutely. When you are in recovery and start to think of food in a healthy frame, you realize that we are using it in ways where it is not the right tool for the job.” - Dr. Susan Pierce Thompson
Today we are excited to welcome Susan Peirce Thompson, Ph.D., back to the show again. For those who need a refresher, Susan is an expert in the psychology of eating and has shared so much with us about the science behind food addiction and addiction. Susan is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester, the President of the Institute for Sustainable Weight Loss, and the CEO of Bright Line Eating Solutions.
On top of that, Susan is a successful published author. We learned about her first book, Bright Line Eating: The Science of Living Happy, Thin and Free, on episode 10, but now Susan is back at it again with her newest book, ReZoom. In this episode, we discuss different sections of her book, what it means to be addicted to food, the difference between eating disorders and food addiction, why food addiction is the most brutal addiction to break, and more.
✅ What we discussed:
What it means to be addicted to food
What happens when you develop leptin resistance
Eating disorders vs. food addiction
Why food addiction is the hardest to break
How to stick with a food plan once you have one in place
Why keeping your food whole, simple, and real food is so important
What a “habit stack” is
Can a food addict ever find joy around eating and food again?
Susan’s new book, ReZoom

The fact that I have obsessed about food all my life, I just chalked it up to the fact I am a good cook and people enjoy my cooking. The moments I was thinking about food was about so much more than that. My life revolved around what to eat, what to cook, and I had trouble keeping my mind focused on other things. The example about a shower was what was super smart. I don't think about it before and after for that so I need to pre-plan meals the day before and allow my brain to enjoy thinking on other things ❤️🎉🎊

I just learned that I’m a food addict and suddenly things are making so much sense to me. Things I haven’t been able to explain my whole life. I started to list my past patterns with food so I can know myself better and prevent relapse. This woman is a life saver.

While I , personally, do not struggle with food addiction, I have some close friends who do. This conversation helped me to further understand and be more empathetic towards these dear people in my life . After listening to all of the smart strategies offered, I am thinking that we could all benefit from incorporating them into our lives to develop a healthier lifestyle! Thanks again for a wonderful interview. 😊

I am addicted to food. I’m about 40 lbs overweight currently but it’s harder on me as I have RA with multiple food sensitivities. So not only is it bad for my weight it’s also keeping my inflammation high. The crazy thing is, I’ll have a bad weekend of eating. So for the next week I’ll eat only the food that is clean and healthy. I can have an occasional sweet or bread but overall eat well. I feel like a different person! My brain fog is gone, joint pain gone and energy high. So why can’t I continue?? I wish I knew!! It’s almost like my brain is telling me to celebrate feeling good with eating something I love. 😩
