Overall I learned that you need to freelance like youre finding a job to apply for. Sets the tone to being that professional artist

The most eye-opening for me is how you suggest NOT doing a price sheet. I had to think about it for a while, but when you mentioned slowly increasing your prices it made so much sense! Having a price sheet effectively sets them in stone - so you're stuck and it makes deciding way more stressful. But deciding with every new client / commission gives you so much more flexibility and lowers the stakes of giving a price quote. We're not McDonalds, we're artists! 😁

@@TheArtMentorYou're welcome! Definitely where to find clients and jobs. No one ever explains that and they just focus on building a website, a commissions page and all the other quite frankly, time consuming things I joined reddit and deviant art a little while ago and I'm posting and interacting to give myself more of a presence before I open commissions. I had a deviant art way back in the day from when I was 16 and the site, especially on mobile was pretty clunky. I love what they've done with it! I was nervous about reddit with its bad rep, but it's been great over there too! I'm excited to start commissions! I'm waiting till next year though. I'm currently building my art business from scratch again after a 3 year hiatus and I started a new job, so my time is more limited at the moment.

1:15 Unfortunately, many comic book publishing houses are shifting from portfolio reviews to social media follower numbers. They seem to have the misguided idea that a popular artist will automatically translate into sales when they're hired. Which is not true if you check the sales numbers in comics (with a few exceptions). I don't know if other industries are doing the same, but it's definitely happening in comics. But, yup. I agree with what you said. Be focused, be very specific, and be a specialist. It helps a lot in the long run.

I’ve heard that too, however, that’s unique to that industry and not the case for freelancing. The other perspective I can offer is that if you want to work in comics, couldn’t you do that yourself without the desire to work for a large publisher? Or also, you could get started working in a smaller studio as well, couldn’t you? But social media success is never guaranteed is it? 😅 and what a distraction it is from your artistry

@@TheArtMentorI’ve been working in comics for almost 20 years (mainly interior art). The agency I work with has noticed the same thing-publishers are shifting from portfolio reviews to focusing on social media. I’m not sure about other areas, but comics are definitely getting harder than before. And if we want to release a creator-owned project on Kickstarter without a publisher, well… having a following helps a lot. Unfortunately, it seems like this is the direction comics are heading, with no turning back. But, yeah! For freelancing, it can be done without a huge following.

Can I first ask what your focus is in wanting to grow a social media following?
@Chonkeeartist90012 ай бұрын
It's saddening that what you've said about a lot of art influencers on various social media platforms were true; they're not yielding everything to people and simply content on maintaining the status quo of keeping their audience (mostly young aspiring artists) in the dark and have them eat each other out to death by severely undercutting themselves to pitiful rates which creates this scarcity mentality you mention that they should just price themselves to disrespectful paltry of coin because that's what they deserve for being a social media "nobody". The idea is to keep them in line in order for these art influencers and social media's businesses to sustain themselves by keeping us beginners from realizing our full potential and just be a consumer. It's refreshing to learn though that we actually don't need any of that attention because people buy art for the quality you can output ( and the experience you can offer) and not about your social media status.

Yeah I've been hearing all of that bad advice for years, and it's so discouraging, isn't it? I actually just 😁watched a new video from another creator spouting the same nonsense and it got me going lol. But you CAN do it! Just don't be afraid to ask okay?

Sean, what do you have to say about people (artists and non-artists) that use the economy as an excuse for discouragement? I'm sick of always hearing "The economy/state of the country is garbage, so don't bother" as an excuse to not pursue art.
@TheArtMentor3 ай бұрын
Oh that's a doozy I addressed here in this video too lol. "the economy" is always an excuse and usually the influence of someone who's either not an artist or not a very successful one. There's always money, regardless of economies. It's a choice to be cheap for any reason, and it's a hard pill to swallow for some, isn't it?
