@TheArtMentor2 ай бұрын
That's awesome! Have you found you have some advantages to younger artists?
@ThomasCurrie10242 ай бұрын
@@TheArtMentor Um, I don't really have advantages or disadvantages. I do think I'm quicker to understand the more complex artistic know-hows, tips, and tricks, and maybe I'm a little quicker at learning how to draw, but nothing especially advantageous. If anything, the fact that I'm starting so late means I'm going to have to work a thousand times harder to get to where I wanna be within a reasonable time frame. I have full confidence I can do it, but it'll be a few years at least until I'm able to draw anything I want, including my characters.

Thanks, I actually needed that since I'm hitting that threshold next year and I'm constantly punishing myself for not managing to earn myself a success when I was those 5-6 years younger, rotting away in a job that I hate, barely managing to get from salary to salary in a lower tier country in middle of EU, and pursuing a degree in, well, art, which felt like a waste of time since I still haven't seen proper fruits of all that hard work. I really hope that I will manage to get out of this mindset and actually get it all together, thanks again 🙏

One of my personal struggles is just not being able to stay on target. Always dropping projects for other projects, either because I learned that I don't like it or I feel like it has no chance of success.
@TheArtMentorАй бұрын
Have you considered that both of those concerns stem from your fear and lack of commitment to them? It's easier to drop and start something else, so what would happen if you just stuck it out instead of getting distracted? I bet you'd impress yourself!

I really like your take on things, and I totally agree. I think the messaging on self care needs a lot of work, and i dont personally know how to change it to best express the concept. As you say, a lot of it gets misunderstood as just self-coddling or used as an excuse to not push onself, which is definitely not helpful. The self care that has been incredibly helpful for me, has been to set my alarm for 6:30am or 8am depending on my schedule, head right out to the gym or a walk, and then work at a coffee shop right after. I would hardly call that coddling, but I have also been a lot choosier about what contracts I take, and invitations I accept, and focusing on making absolute sure that I get enough sleep, and saying no to things that my inner compass says are bad. I figure that I cannot produce good quality art or other services if I am not well slept, healthy, and emotionally centred. This has increased the quality and volume of my work, but I cant think of a way to explain it to another that doesnt open it up to being used as an excuse for laziness. I have definitely run into clients of mine who I tried to make allowances for accessibility, and they then didn't follow through on anything.

That's an awesome TRUE self-care routine! I hope everyone watching this also reads your habits and considers how they can be a rockstar like you! Thanks so much for watching and I'm thrilled to hear you got this out of this video!

Happy birthday Sean. Surprise! I turned 38 today. I'm kind of having trouble mustering the "Fuck you" energy to really dig my heels into my art. I've been programmed to believe the words "You can't" for so long, that it's held me back since I turned 24 years old. 14 years. I struggled from 24 to 31 before I finally started to draw consistently. Then after I moved, I listened to another six years of my uncle, my grandmother, and my uncle's family shooting me down. Even my current boss has jumped on the bandwagon.
