@@itssaxv2455 According to a friend of mine who's a huge Audrey Hepburn fan, Hepburn wanted to become a professional ballet dancer but was rejected because the directors of the ballet companies believed her body (especially her skeleton) was not capable of handling the intense physical demands of the vocation due to the deprivations of her early childhood. Hepburn is widely viewed as a fashion icon and one of the most beautiful and elegant women of the 20th Century...but ironically, she did not see herself as beautiful and supposedly hated to shop for clothes because she did not like the way her body looked and had trouble finding clothes which she thought fit her properly and which she felt comfortable wearing. It just goes to show that even someone as glamorous and gorgeous as Audrey Hepburn was can still have insecurities.

So I’m not sure what the original amount was but less 18 means minus. So if, for example, you start off with $20, then less $18, you now only have $2 because 20-18 is 2. Does that make sense? 😊

"Less eighteen dollars" doesn't mean that she only had eighteen dollars left. She spent eighteen dollars in order to have her dress fixed...evidently because her male companion Mr. Fitzsimmons was a little too aggressively amorous with the result that it tore. She would have had thirty-two of the original fifty dollars after that. Especially back then, fifty dollars would have been rather a lot of money for a man to give a woman just for the "powder room" (and especially if he also paid for dinner and drinks) -- there is a very oblique implication here that Mr. Fitzsimmons most likely attempted to take the cost out in trade (so to speak) and that this is why Holly refers to him as a "rat." In all fairness, however, Holly is a "gold digger" -- the film industry evidently softened the character somewhat from the original Truman Capote story so that it would get past the censors. Capote emphasized that Holly is not a prostitute -- he described her as being like an American version of a geisha -- but there's no question that she's "on the make" and using men for money.

I don't think it's meant to be either one in this particular instance although Sally Tomato is a gangster who trafficks in drugs. At this point, Holly is still quite naive (even though she pretends to be otherwise, which is part of what makes her character, like Sally Bowles in "Cabaret", a little desperate and tragic). What Holly doesn't realize is that Sally Tomato is secretly using the "weather report" in order to send information and instructions to his associates...which is why she ends up getting arrested.
