Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Penang definitely does a great breakfast!
Right smack bang in the middle of Georgetown is the famous Chowrasta Market. Whenever I return to Penang, this is a must visit. It's a wet market, food centre and general shopping all in a compact space.
You will NOT go hungry here as there are stalls and vendors with almost every conceivable food.
For today's breakfast, we visit one of our favourite little kopi tiam - coffee shop. Now, remember, a kopi tiam is usually made up on multiple vendors cooking a single dish each. So, do as we do and buy multiple dishes and share.
Be warned, this coffee shop is always full. You just have to be patient and wait for a table to become available. Also, they are only open for breakfast so be sure to visit here.
We ordered:
- Duck keow teow thng
- Wanton mee
- Char keow teow
- Curry mee
Kedai Kopi Soon Yuen
Jalan Kuala Kangsar, George Town,
Hours of operation : 6am - 12pm
You will thank me! You're welcome.

Based in Melbourne, Australia, I watch too much TV, eat and drink too much to be a productive member of society. I have an insatiable craving to taste, smell and enjoy everything life has in store for me.
I have been bitten by the wanderlust bug and find nothing more thrilling than packing my bag and jumping on a plane to any far flung destination.

Tim, you are a lucky man. A mum who would surrender a chunk of fried pork lard for her son!!! They don't come any better than that, do they? Oh, and thanks for deconstructing the dishes in the local dialects. Quite what the th'ng is in kway teow th'ng has eluded me until now.

I know right? Mum is an absolute angel for sacrificing a piece of the pork lard for me. Mother of year as far as I'm concerned! You are very welcome. My hokkien is terrible at the best of times but it's good enough when it comes to food! haha

Those pancakes were as thin as air...i imagine they had no calories. Guilt free. Beauty of Asia is that clothes are cheap so I can just keep updating my wardrobe as my waist line expands. HAHA

@@TimEatsandTravels you are so funny Tim. Your combination of peanuts and sugar is my favourite. I used to make peanut butter and sugar sandwiches.

Oh emm gee... Chulia! That's my childhood all revived again. I'll not eat that kon lo wearing white. Lol! I absolutely love love LOVE these Malaysian fish ball soups because they normally make their own balls. Amazing. The only reason why I have Penang CKT is the pork lard, they're everything. Dried sotong in curry noodles, now that I've got to try sounds new to me. Haha that's a lot of coffee powder. There's finally something you don't eat .. corn! Yeah that ban chiang kueh, I ate that a lot for brekkie too. Loved the video!

Yeah, it's a weird one which I also cannot get my head around. I don't like corn at the best of times let alone in a dessert/sweet snack.

Yum. I love Apom and must confess to eating quite a few (ok maybe more than a few) when we were there in January. The place we got ours from was run by one uncle all by himself and he was always so busy I felt like jumping in and giving him a helping hand. Thanks for the video, hope you are doing ok.
