I'm a Sarawakian living in Pullman, WA, USA. I am trying my best to cook Sarawakian dishes, and my neighbor like them a lot. But trust me, whenever I cook Malaysian dishes, someone will ask me what I am cooking today. LOL! They say it smells nice, and they like the flavors a lot! I ended up teaching them how to make roti canai as well.

I’m from Kuching, Sarawak, thank you for featuring this video and it seems that Sarawak Laksa has obviously blown your minds. For the best Laksa in Sarawak, it varies from person to person as some may like it more creamy/thick, some like it spicier/diluted, and there are those who likes it in between. The best you can get is in Kuching, Sarawak and honestly there are many types of dishes other than laksa Sarawak when you visit Kuching in the future. Such as the dayak dishes, ayam pansuh, umai, tempoyak. Chinese ones too such as Sarawak kolomee, kuey chap, lei cha etc. We are also famous for midin (fiddlefern) here. Personally I prefer it in between and a little to the creamier side(meaning more santan). I like the ones from “mom’s laksa” @ jalan haji taha(original branch). There are other places too but it’s hard to mention them all as they are usually stalls around kopitiams in kuching. Extracted this info: “ the local legend is that a Chinese Teochew immigrant from Guangzhou named Goh Lik Teck first began peddling his noodle dish along Kuching’s Carpenter Street in 1945. The dish was only made up of six (6) ingredients, which is how it got its name - the Hokkien term for six is "lak" and "sa" is slang for vermicelli.” Besides those, you can get quick fixes at home by purchasing the lee fah instant sarawak laksa. They are the blue and red packaging with 4 packs in them. Those come close and are better than most of the mediocre ones here.

@@madkhaliqfarhan, the story of how laksa Sarawak came to being was published some years ago. It was made by an uncle for school kids. In my culture, we always refer to our young ones as our "little gods". That is the reason why it is never a meal that traditionally featured pork. The meat and prawns can easily be replaced with julienne cucumber and fried squared soy bead curds for the vegetarian version. This dish was "created" so that everyone can enjoy it - Muslims, non-Muslims, vegetarian & non-vegetarian alike.

Raw bean sprouts/ taugeh is sweet and crunchy...try without cooking it..just pour the curry over it Leftover galangal/ lengkuas and lemongrass / serai can be frozen till later use. It will be soft after thawed and easier to blend

When we are back in Kuching, it is all he eats for breakfast and for my kiddo's, it is hands down red kolo mee. Well done on making Sarawak laksa from scratch. Usually if you make the paste, let it rest for a day or longer ( you can freeze the remaining paste) and it will blow your mind even further 😂 I'm so happy to see you all enjoy my favourite laksa 💗💗💗

Laksa Sarawak is indeed an amazing underrated Malaysian dish. It should stand on the same level with Rendang (or maybe after Rendang 😅). And you guys making it from scratch, that's so incredible. Hats off!! Anyway, just a tip for presentation, it's better if you pour the soup first before you do the decoration. The garnish will look fresher on photo. And oh ya Rachel, you acctually can shred the chicken using hand mixer (am I saying it right? The machine use to mix the cake batter. Lols!) Time and energy saving. Haha. Great video as always. Love from Perak ❤

As a Sarawakian, I would like thank both Kumaar and Rachel for doing this "breakfast of the gods" - Sarawak laksa video. Yes, indeed it is more than a breakfast of/for the gods. Almost all Sarawakians love this food, from the very old to the young. Literally, the minute we are weaned from our mothers' milk we start eating Sarawak laksa - exaggeration of course 🤣🤣. Jokes aside, for me, the best Sarawak laksa place in the world is, of course, in Kuching, Sarawak. And, in Kuching, the best place to get it is at Da' Apple kopitiam, Jalan Chan Chin Ann, Kuching, Sarawak, which is next to the Sarawak Plaza complex. U can get the Sarawak laksa paste online on the “A” site in the States (mentioned the full name earlier and my comment got deleted). Less the fuss. Buy the Haji Manan brand, tho I prefer Burung Bayan but it’s not available on A. Add lightly smashed ginger, galangal n lemongrass while boiling the paste. Some dashes of evaporated milk together with the santan to make it creamier. Top it with coriander leaves while serving. Don’t forget sambal belacan and calamansi for extra kick. Just blend toasted belacan with lotsa red chillies (deseeded) for the sambal. Those will bring ur laksa Sarawak game to a whole new level.

I remembered trying it in Kuching the first time and it was delicious! It does have the mix between Chinese curry + Penang prawn mee broth but I think the ratio to make the sambal is different compared to the usual Chinese curry (in Ipoh) and the prawn mee broth. Overall, Malaysian food is full of colours! And oh yes, I think the Chinese curry (in Ipoh) doesn't have the belacan straight in to the curry. That could be the biggest difference me thinks. All in all, kudos and great job to Rachel for doing 99% of the cooking (other than the omelet) and Logesh's "bowl-ing" is 5 stars yummy. I was thinking that you guys have been too "kiam siap" (stingy - in Hokkien) on the broth haha... but Logesh made good by topping up some broth just enough to soak all the food in. (Kai kai doesn't fancy bee hoon? haha)

If you ever come back to KL, try the laksa at SALTed, the best laksa for me personally in KL. they also serve other Sarawak delicacies such as Mee Kolok, Mee belacan, etc. But back home in Kuching, my mak's laksa is the best.... hahahaha. But if you do go to Kuching, to be honest, any stalls or restaurant cooks the best and authentic laksa. But there's a chained restaurant named Mom's Laksa you can go to.

Most Sarawakians have their own personal favorite laksa place in Kuching or other places within Sarawak (some not even on the popular list), because of one secret ingredient, memories since childhood that goes along with the bowl. But do come and try, there is the Malay style and the Chinese style, both as good.

Malaysia is a land of laksas. There are so many kinds with each state having its own signature laksa. Love all of them but ofc Im partial to Terengganu laksa 😃 of which there are 2 kinds namely Laksa Kuah Putih and Laksa Kuah Merah. Come on over to sample them. That was a nice touch with Anthony Bourdain introducing Laksa Sarawak.Love the man.May he RIP and may he be free off whatever demons he was fighting. Wonderful job with Laksa Sarawak guys.

There is one sarawak laksa that i love its at bangsar. Its a kopitiam in Kedai makanan nam chun. Her stall is aunty christina's sarawak laksa since 1960 and also came out in newspapers. I'm not sure whether it's still open cz i am working overseas and haven't been since before pandemic. Hope this helps. 😊

For me the best would be in kuching, and i'm from miri sarawak. Infact every town in sarawak have their very best version. When it comes to laksa sarawak it's really hard to tell them apart. I won't be recommending any particular shop, but the rule of thumb is where the locals go that is where the action is.😄 I have to agree with you, you won't get the best laksa sarawak in other states in malaysia. It is purely only in sarawak.

Personally for me i like laksa sarawak from King Laksa Restaurant in Kuching or Samarahan in Sarawak. My house near Samarahan. But in KL, i guess you can go to Dapur Sarawak, Dayang Sarawak Corner or maybe Kedey Kamek. Spend some time in Kuching you can try mee kolok, mee sapi, mee belacan, mee jawa with satey in it, three layered tea, kek lapis and many more. Besides Penang and Kelantan, Sarawak also famous with their food.

It's impressive that you prepared the laksa paste from scratch. I'm a Sarawakian, I know not many Sarawakians know or willing to make the paste themselves due to the amount of work involved in preparing it; many (including myself) would just settle with premade paste bought from supermarket. It's not that I can tell the difference anyway 😁 BTW I may be bias due to being a Sarawakian but I personally think laksa Sarawak's "kuah" has the richest taste of all Malaysian laksa I've tasted so far.

You are right. It is not easy to prepare the paste and it certainly is time consuming. Hats off to Rachel and Logesh for doing it. Maybe someone frkm Sarawak can send them the ready made paste. It has nothing to do with bias that you think the broth is really tasty and yummy because IT IS. Period.

I commend you both for trying to make Laksa Sarawak from scratch... certainly not the easiest thing to do. That is why many Sarawakians prefer to buy the paste instead. I think you can also get them online. I think the Bayan Bird Brand is the pioneer of the packet paste. By the way... you can't be generous with the coconut milk because laksa Sarawak may use coconut milk in it but not in generous amount or else it will overpower the whole taste. Same with chillies. I read somewhere that the late Anthony Bourdain wanted to bring laksa Sarawak to the US back then but not sure if he managed to do that before he passed on... As for the best laksa in Sarawak... Anthony Bourdain had his at Choon Hui Cafe. Another good one is at Chong Choon (Poh Lam stall) Cafe. Both are in Kuching. Mom's Laksa Kopitiam is another one where you can get a good one (halal). We've tried other places and they are just as nice. I had one in 2004 at Serapi Corner (halal)... they did their both a bit thicker and spicier. That's basically the differences that you will get.

yes, havent tried laksa sarawak myself in my 29years of life.. thing is it's hard to find people selling it in semenanjung.. but recipe itself looks a lot similar to the nyonya curry laksa. wonder whats the difference.

The paste is different. Bihun is used instead of mee. Other ingredients are taugeh, prawn, limau kasturu, belacan .... It does not taste like nyonya curry laksa. Like Kumar said, you have to try it to know it tastes definitely better than curry laksa. If it tastes like curry, it is not authentic Sarawak laksa. In the past, the Sarawak laksa sold in West Malaysia tasted more like curry laksa to me. Now it is getting better.

do you know beside Laksa Sarawak there also Laksa Borneo.you guys can get it at James Brooke Bistro & Cafe located at Kuching Waterfront..of course there array of local signature such as Mee Kolo, Mee Belacan, Mee Brunei and many more. Suggested best location for Laksa Sarawak is Yuyu Cafe in Satok. Of course there a local brand known as Mom Laksa and they have few outlets. Few restaurants in Kl also serve Sarawak dish such as Dapo Sarawak, Kedey Kamek at TTDI.

Now that you look like you’re in Malaysia. Come to Kuching, Sarawak. Anthony Bourdain’s favourite is at Choon Hui Cafe on Ban Hock Road. My personal favourite though is Alfred’s laksa at Sung Heng Cafe near Wisma Mahmud. Everyone’s favourite Sarawak laksa is not cooked at home, because the favourites are all at stalls whose recipes as Anthony Bourdain said contains the wisdom of the ages. It’s each stall’s best kept secret.
