That's the thing, we used to get these films, like THE ORDER and JUROR #2 all the time in the 90's. But that's 30 years ago. They don't really happen much at all anymore in the theatrical space, so when they do and are well made, they're a breath of fresh movie air to filmgoers. If only they were released and marketed properly (not that they know how to do that anymore).
@OldBluesChapterandVerse10 күн бұрын
I was getting on here to say exactly this. Christy makes a great point when she says that while it may have been done before, it's not done much at all these days -- which, as you point, makes it feel new. Or, for those of us of a certain age, like a throwback to an age of filmmaking we desperately miss.

Hi, believe it or not, when I was just out of college I lived in Denver in 1984. I took a job at a pizza place, call "Pizza Bug". On the night of June 18, 1984, I made a delivery, not far from the restaurant on Adams Street. When I was handing the pizza to the recipient, I heard gunshots to my right and ran to my car, going away in the opposite direction because my car look like a cop car. I drove around for about 10 minutes to recover and when I got back, the restaurant manager was shocked and relieved to find out that it wasn't me that was shot! Because the address was very close, two doors down from the apartment of Alan Berg. A story had come on the radio right as I walked in and I heard about it. It made national news. I didn't realize "The Order" was what the movie was about because The Order had been processed and found guilty then sent to jail for quite a while. It was too dangerous for me to keep working there and I quit two days later. So when I heard you both mention it I got the chills!

I saw The Order because it was based on a true story that I didn’t know about. I thought it was good. I agree with Christie’s points including about appearance of Hoult in this movie. Early Tom Cruise. I was happy to see Jude Law successfully pull off this role. He and Hugh Grant can be appreciated as fine actors rather than good looking rom com movie stars.

“Been there, done that” isn’t a flaw, almost all art is taking pieces of what’s been done before. This is the type of movie that those who mourn the slow death of cinema should celebrate for existing in this franchise/existing IP world. Oh, and this is not arthouse, if it is, cinema is in its death rattle phase.
@songandanceКүн бұрын
I agree with you. Anyone who listens to platforms like this (and I’m not condemning this kind of outlet) should take it with a grain of salt. The slow death of cinema, and theater for that matter, could be in the hands of critics. I’m one of those people who watch movies, knowing that it has an amount of “Hollywood-ness”, to inspire me to deep dive on the subject matter.

Talk Radio was one of Oliver Stone's last great films, and the stage play it was based on was inspired by this story. Some will compare Berg to Howard Stern. Talk Radio was certainly a hybrid of the two, but Berg was more of an intellect poking at the hornet's nest than Stern was. It's not surprising how accurate it reflects the psychosphere of podcasting these days.

I have to disagree with Alonso on this one - big time. I love this movie - probably within my top ten of 2024. This is in the spirit of great movies like Untouchable or Heat - the cops and robbers playing cat and mouse games. Does it have to be different/original or groundbreaking? I don’t think so. It’s just a solidly made movie/storytelling . It is a good reminder of good and evil and the many shades in between in this big US of A. And I’ve never hear Jude Law without his accent; it did not think he could do it - kind of like Hugh Grant. So, he really surprised me.

Nicholas Hoult is really having a bumper year with this movie, Nosferatu and Juror #2. It's about time he steps in leading man roles because he is really good and he has that attractive star quality that makes a movie star. Kind of reminds me of a young Tom Cruise except he is already in his mid thirties.

Since it’s based on a true story I cut it the slack for feeling like I watched it before. The characters were original to me in the sense that they were their own person. I thought the action and the atmosphere were good personally. I’d give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. I watched some videos about the real thing after the movie and the movie got a lot of things right

Alonzo ought to understand that his complaint about the movie feeling familiar is something that is inevitable as we age and should not be held against a well-mounted recounting of those familiar themes. There are a few generations behind us now who have not seen all those previous movies that may make the material feel also-ran to us. And given the reluctance of many among the younger generations to dig deep into the back catalog, they are not likely to ever discover those previous tellings of these issues. While the complaint is valid, it is not in my opinion a reason to denigrate a new re-telling.

Sorry Christy, I'm with Alonso on this one. The problem is that this is predictable. It's a cat and mouse game, and we know early on how it's going to end. The middle is filler. Plus the movie feels like a cop TV show.

@susanalfieri448711 күн бұрын
I thought BLACKKKLANSMAN was really, really good. The tension in that movie seriously ignited my anxiety, but I think that's what it was trying to do. Going undercover in a dangerous space is very dicey. Your safety--and, truly, your life--balances on a knife's edge. And if you're caught, you will die in a horrific way (likely full of suffering). So, yeah, high tension...
