When I was in my early 20's, one of the women managers in her 40's came in wearing a nice dress. I said, "You look nice today." Nothing more. I definitely was not flirting. She then told me that if I ever commented on her looks again, she would report me to HR. I NEVER complimented another woman at work ever, even if they asked. I think it's an American thing, because I used to get compliments from my colleagues when I lived in France.

She said I never would have given a compliment to a man, and that people like me "were the problem". She made me feel bad and scared. We didn't work together, so I just avoided her after that and looked away when we passed in the hallway. I was a chip designer, so everyone dressed down, including her, except that day when I thought I was being nice. It was like saying "Hello" and getting punched in the face.

This has been happening to me all my life with men and women. I'm kind and give whoever I'm talking to my undivided attention. I ask them questions about themselves, tell jokes and be my fun loving self. Then next thing I know they are in their feelings THINKING I was flirting. I'm like 👀👀👀 100% NEGATIVE, it never happened. My hypothesis is most people don't get undivided attention in their personal lives, so when they get it, they jump out the window thinking it's more than it is. I’ve had several situations in the past while working for a large corporation where I was simply being polite, but was mistaken for flirting. After talking to women colleagues , something that became clear to me was the difference between sexual harassment and flirting was how much they like or was interested in the person. Lol for me i came up with a few simple rules: 1. NEVER shit where you eat- under no circumstances to i date or engage with women i work with or women who live in my community, or close connections to. The fact that a lot of men believe that if they say something and you smile back then they somehow "got you" is crazy to me.
