What happened to all the innovation that was announced probably a bit over a decade ago regarding improving fuel economy on semis? I remember hearing about things Cummins and other manufacturers were doing such as turbines, etc. and recall them claiming something like 12 mpg had been achieved. Walmart was supposed to be all over these innovations. Fast forward to now and I don't see anything from that. What happened? Did everybody drop the ball because fuel became somewhat cheap again for several years?
@jptransport88302 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. It's probably the law of diminishing returns. Sure they can get 12mpg but, it might take a half million dollar truck to get it.
@davidkeller3402 жыл бұрын
@@jptransport8830 I ran into a former Cummins employee and he said that significant strides had been achieved in fuel economy by converting to a hybrid drivetrain. The problem was the torque output was so high that components were breaking too much. Until they can solve durability issues, their new tech will not be commercialized.
@jptransport88302 жыл бұрын
@@davidkeller340 I guess it's like how a locomotive works. I'm a Freightliner fan but, I've been listening about Volvo trucks with turbo compounding, Ishift transmission and very high rear end ratio like 2.05 ratio. The first two gears in the transmission are very low so, startabilty isn't a problem. If you have a forward lift axle on the truck and trailer it would be tough to beat that set up.

That hyper mileage can be an art form. Get the speed up fir the hilling the coast down the other side, keeping off the boost as much as possible. My dad owned a number if roadtrains in Macks and KW CAT in Australia he was getting about 2km per litre around 4mpg, not that good but he does pull 3 trailers up to 120tonnes 260000lb
