Recently, we’ve noticed an Owner Operator driving a 2014 Volvo has been spending significantly more on fuel compared to a driver in a 2021 Volvo.
Will Ronen take action and discuss with the driver his potential fuel savings if he decides to upgrade to a newer Volvo? Is it worth it for the driver to make the big jump?
In this video, Ronen breaks down the data analysis from both trucks/drivers and explains the vast savings the Owner Operator could have if he were to upgrade from the 2014 Volvo to the 2021 Volvo.
Let us know if you've learned something from this video and comment down below!

I would stick with the old truck and add an APU to it. I noticed that you did not mention the engine run time on both of the truck. I seen it to come out to be a difference of 140 hours on one truck compared to the other. I am sure having one truck running or idling for that much longer pays a huge amount on the average MPG for his truck.
@kevinbailey7106
@kevinbailey7106 2 жыл бұрын
There's a lot more involved in understanding mpg than just the age of the truck. Driving habits, idle time, type and weight of the load, weather conditions, geography and grade of fuel all play a role. Comparing numbers in a spreadsheet is an over simplification because two trucks will never have all of these factors equal. In my short 27 years of experience, driving habits and idling are the two biggest factors to consider and will make the largest impact. New equipment doesn't automatically grant higher fuel mileage, therefore the savings you mentioned would not be realized unless these other variables are addressed.

Bang on!! I was able to squeeze over 8mpg out of my 2014 389 petebilt with 46k rears 4.10 gears pulling 80,000lbs and do so more then once. Gong south into the states I consistently got over 7mpg by just going 60mph, driving habit is a large part of the picture! My parents run a 367 pete with 40k rear 3.73 and they consistently see 8mpg, sometimes more if they have a low light load.

This guy is just a numbers guy. This is also the same guy that says to buy a new truck over an old one (pre-emissions) in another video because since it's older, it will be more susceptible to problems. I currently drive a 2018 Kenworth that has had close to $30,000 in repairs just to the DPF system. Don't have that garbage on an old truck but I guess the guy sitting behind the desk wouldn't know how problematic this stuff is on new trucks.

First of all.....I truly appreciate your informative content! Very refreshing! Apples to apples..... Given that you have demonstrated in previous videos that only different driving habits in the same truck can produce similar results to your fuel mileage comparison in this video, I believe the analysis needs to dive a bit deeper.....to include a comparison in driving habits (speed, idle time, cruise, etc) as well. This would allow for a more accurate measure of the differences of "Old vs New". Having said that. ... tell him to buy a new one and I'll buy his old one for 35k!! Haha Keep up the great work you guys and gals!!

IMHO the choice really isn't about fuel mileage, it's between having a warranty and paying the repair costs. We don't know what condition the '14 is in (heck, he may have just recently rebuilt the engine in it), it may be pristine or it may be one bump away from falling apart. The owner of the '14 doesn't have any payments on the truck, a big plus for him. He also (likely) has no warranty left on the unit, so all repairs come out of his pocket, a big minus. With any vehicle these days, the average Joe can't fix them - doesn't matter if they're cars, pickups, or Class 8 trucks. When those dash lights come on, you're taking into a dealer to see WTF is wrong with it. The O/O's REAL choice is pay for lease with warranty, or pay for mechanics/techs. It's really that simple. I also don't think you set up a fair comparison. To be equal, you needed a '14 Volvo with the same engine, transmission, and rear end gear ratios as the '21, and they had to be operated over the same terrain with preferably the same driver (not practical I know). The trucks are spec'd differently and that will have an enormous effect on fuel consumption.

I agree. I do believe the 15's and 14's are less efficient (even before turbo compounding, so say in comparison to 2019's), but how much less efficient over the same course, with the same driver and equal-grade of truck, I don't know.

your data is very skewed. I've only been driving 3 yrs but pretty good with numbers, and you made a mistake by showing "all" the data in the 2nd comparision. I believe the gas mileage is about the same because the 2014 had 140 more hrs of engine run time which you did not show in the 1st comparision. And 140 hrs equals about 12 more days of driving or idle for 140 extra hrs, either way, that is a major difference in gas consumpation, which is why companies offer a bonus for the amount of fuel you save. Don't know the driving conditions but a APU would do wonders I suppose

I just parked a 20 year old truck and bought a 2022 model. It wasn’t the fuel economy that decided it for me. Fuel is just another operating cost like cost of borrowing, depreciation, maintenance and repairs. However, the fuel cost savings definitely play a role in justifying my new rather large payment. I’ll say this, that DD15 and DT12 transmission are a brilliant combination.

It's not just fuel maintenance is going the be cut in half . One driver is paying over 24k a yr in fuel alone . 60k in the bank after I buy the truck sign me up. The whole point in buying older to drive until the wheels fall out or you need a 10k to 35k engine rebuild . But many drivers are not saving money . My cousin just bought 2020 Volvo almost all 💵 why she she still monet saved afterwards and she been driving for less than 10 yrs .

No argument on that question, numbers don't lie. The older truck is going to require a lot more maintenance and repairs over the next four years verses a 2020 model. Take a 1000 mile trip for example, at 5.6 mpg he'd have to buy 178.57 gallons of fuel with his 2014. With a 2020 he would only need to purchase 119.05 gallons of diesel for the same trip. He'd save 59.5 gallons of gas. Based on GasBuddy for Indianapolis IN. The 2014 driver would have saved $193.38 using a 2020 truck for the same 1000 mile trip. That is a huge savings. Any idea the per mile savings based on $3.25 per gallon diesel? Try 19.34 cents U.S. per mile over his 2014 Volvo Truck. That savings Canadian is 24.17 cents per mile.

The fact that the truck is paid for vs. a payment I would keep my old truck, the savings on no payment outweighs the few hundred extra in gas a month. But I would have to factor in maintenance costs as a driving factor also…..a high mileage truck requires more maintenance so am I losing money there over a payment?

My solution for that with a new truck would be to cut your living expenses down as much as possible. As an O/O bank as much money as you can and pay the truck down quickly. I see O/O banking $200,000 a year, so put as much of that as you can safely afford towards the truck and get that sucker paid off and enjoy a couple years (hopefully) of no or really low payments and a warranty. Just my two cents.

Tell the driver what the situation is. However, go through the physical differences of the new vs old truck that are causing the fuel economy savings. Is it the new magical engine? Does the old truck have a small engine with a turbo while the new truck has a larger engine without a turbo? More efficient transmission? Or simply low rolling resistance tires? Do they have a big metal visor that scoops all the air where vanity/'coolness' saps $2,500/month from their checks? What lower cost options do they have for their old truck that can approach the mpg of the new truck? Say the root cause is the clunky tires they have on the old truck. In a year that driver will put replacement tires on the new truck and be in the same smaller checks that they have now plus the bigger payment -- that would be a bad scenario.

Upgrade to newer! Save money on fuel Much more comfortable, a huge plus! Chances are if he’s running that older truck he’s also doing a lot of idling for air conditioning and heating the bunk while stopped. Newer trucks tend to have options where you don’t need to idle the engine, putting extra wear and more fuel consumption. A newer truck in good shape will get less attention paid to it during roadside inspections as well. My opinion, much more beneficial to have a newer truck. Excellent video, thank you!

Well.. the 760 is defiantly gonna win seeing as both trucks being compared run emissions system. I would say that if both trucks are mostly driving flat lands that the heavy spec 515hp older truck would be considered "over-spec'ed" for basic van work, have that truck pull flatbed or tanker. Rear end ratios can also have an effect on fuel mileage. The 760 would be more appealing in regards to comfort, safety, fuel mileage updated D13 engine, and better aftertreatment system (assuming it doesn't break .. smh). Now is this was a 760 vs a pre-emissions (no DPF) Volvo with a D12 engine I'd say keep running that old truck, It will have a higher probability of keeping you on the road and out of the shop. And spec'ed right those D12's can get good fuel mileage and less problems.

Instead of paying extra on fuel your paying in vehicle payment. However I’m a company driver. Had recently been issued a 2021 freightliner. Only 54 miles on it when I got it. Cant hardly feel it when shifts. Great ride. I’ve had it in the shop twice though. Bad AC compressor. Had to run main engine to keep cab cool in southern cal and Arizona. I think a all come down to how much the drive wants to compromise, because a driver a lease payment has to keep that truck running in order to keep up with the payments regardless how much fuel you saving. The driver how a pay off truck the amount of fuel that the driver spends is going to depend on how hard the truck is running, at the very end is about the driver choice.

Question that still needs to be answered before he makes a choice is what is his insurance payment difference between old and new truck? If his insurance payment is the same, it is wiser to be in the new truck but that constant monthly truck payment rain or shine is something that 100% will add stress to his life.

He can save whatever, but what you have to understand is he knows that truck is solid there is no reason for him to upgrade to a new one. Until his truck starts to give him problems there is no reason to upgrade. Fuel savings or not, if its just one truck a single owner op can not risk the down time. See Ronen, you have a fleet to maintain so you need the best numbers possible, but if its just 1 guy with his truck he has to do whatever he can to make sure his truck is running and his wheels are turning, fuel mileage isn't the biggest concern there you feel me brother

If getting into a shop is problematic and a new truck has you dealing with Dealerships only, there by limiting your options on getting back on the road? Fuel cost as well as maintenance plus wear and tear is directly related to mileage. If your milage goes down so does fuel cost. I had a 1980's (?) Volvo 7070 with a 650 HP Cat manual and I ran Reefer from Montreal to Salinas California. I got about 7 to 6 mpg (us). Upgrading seems like a gamble, the older truck is a sure thing if it is reliable. As a numbers guy or as someone managing a fleet you want the newest, but a O/O needs to assess his risk factors. A younger driver can recover from bad financial choices an older driver nearing the end of his career and looking at retirement cannot. I am thinking of driving again and have huge support so money would not be my thing. Big bad and chrome will be my home all I care about is high end truck stops, drop and hook in decent areas with little to no wait times. Nice hotel near by with room service and a pool. Call me when you have the right load. I did my time now I just want to drive around and have someone pick up the fuel and truck cost. If I make enough for a cup of coffee every month who cares. It's my hobby now after 30 years. And before the hates starts Im the guy that will let you take or give you the better load or even jump in front of me. I also back you truck in when you think it can't be done then refuse to take your money. Start the hate now...ps never got a ticket for anything clear record since day one. I am going to be ALL Show and little GO. I'll be easy to spot parked with all that chrome doing a reset at the Chicken Ranch in Nevada. Old School Son best life ever.

I would upgrade to a newer truck- the fuel savings and truck payment cancel each other out- The real benefit is a newer truck, with a manufacturers warranty, newer (possibly better)emissions components and after the truck is paid off, you now have more equity in a newer truck. Also less breakdowns/ downtime
@scav3155

The monthly payment on a new truck would not be canceled out by the fuel savings. You will most likely to get better fuel mileage from the new truck but not enough to completely offset the monthly payment.

Not sure if the terminology is different there, but I would caution against calling this a 'lease' payment as opposed to a 'finance' payment. A 'Lease' in the truck world can mean one of a few different things, but the most common usage is not 'ownership' and, thus, not 'financing.' Leasing is expensive in its own right as leasing a truck is a sort of luxury service (maintenance, fast replacements if a truck goes down, etc.) being provided to fleet owners. Financing a truck will cost a driver less over the long-term as long as they are mechanically adept enough to understand the truck, what it needs, and manage that aspect (for reliability and uptime) themselves. I agree with the premise; I've seen the same with the smaller fleets I've worked with. Nobody puts the perspective of a 1 MPG decrease in fuel usage into perspective better than the owner of one of the fleets I work with. I can't recall it well enough to re-write it here, but it was neat to hear him explain it.

Signing up for those higher payments really locks you into having to work more without the freedom of just parking the truck for a month, or two. But, the numbers add up so if he's consistently on the road it's a no brain'r he should upgrade be under warranty, and making more money ultimately on the front end and back end when he trades it in.

Hey Ronen, I know that this video is "just" about the mileage which is very important as it also suggests the driver is not idling excessively, braking hard and driving erratically but I think it should be be made clear that being an O/O is a business. Running a business is multifaceted and has many different sides which must be addressed to be successful. My questions to you would be :- Is the owner of the 2014 Volvo successful and if not why not ? If he is why change his business model, if not, is it sensible to "saddle" him with debt ?

I would show him those numbers and asking about that idling time first. Maybe a APU would help him to control his fuel consumption. But i would bring under his attention that the newer truck is still under warranty,and has less running damage or use then the old truck he has now. Plus the fact he can do now more his work relaxing without to be sitting with your butt closed because another tech-breakdown is sooner on the older truck then on the newer truck. And even the insurance maybe a bit more expensive on the newer truck, it is still comming out of that fuelsavings. The extra comfort is a aditional extra.

Maybe - I noticed that the 2014 Volvo seems to have higher engine hours during the same periods, and also hauling heavier weights - so my take is there are more differences in how these trucks are being used. Can the driver drive more efficently, can he reduce those engine run hours... There def will be reduced maint on the newer truck as well to factor in as well. So, sorry I don't have enough data to actually say for certain he could save, and in fact I think I already see one way he can save on his fuel costs and that would be for him to get his engine run hours down to match the other driver. I'm saying you need a more thurough then a simple analisys then to only base it on fuel used. So no, I wouldn't just do that off hand.

There shouldn't be that much of a fuel mileage difference between those 2 trucks. Both have aerodynamic cabs and assuming both have D13's with I-shift. Could be something wrong with the 2014, for example an air to air leak. A more fair test would be to compare 3 of your 2021 volvos with 3 of your 2014 Volvo's.
