Retro Movie Review of 1979 Classic -- BREAKING AWAY
Breaking Away is a 1979 American coming of age comedy-drama film produced and directed by Peter Yates and written by Steve Tesich. It follows a group of four male teenagers in Bloomington, Indiana, who have recently graduated from high school. The film stars Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern (in his film debut), Jackie Earle Haley, Barbara Barrie, Paul Dooley, and Robyn Douglass.
Breaking Away won the 1979 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Tesich, and received nominations in four other categories, including Best Picture. It also won the 1979 Golden Globe Award for Best Film (Comedy or Musical) and received nominations in three other Golden Globe categories. The film was ranked eighth on the List of America's 100 Most Inspiring Movies compiled by the American Film Institute (AFI) in 2006. In June 2008, the AFI also announced its 10 Top 10-the best ten films in ten classic American film genres. In that poll Breaking Away ranked as the eighth best film in the sports genre.
As the film's young lead, Christopher won the 1979 BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer and the 1979 Young Artist Award for Best Juvenile Actor, as well as getting a Golden Globe nomination as New Star of the Year.
Tesich was an alumnus of Indiana University Bloomington. The film was shot in and around Bloomington and on the university's campus.

Thank you for introducing me to this movie. I watched it with my grandma and feel tempted to watch it again very soon.

It's an inspirational film. One of the best sports movies ever because it's about the characters and not the thing, the event, the object.

Thanks for your review. My favorite movie as well. Just got the DVD out of my local library again (in the midst of a cycling-centric vacation), which prompted my search for others' commentary. In addition to winning the Oscar for best original screenplay, it was also nominated for four other Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Music. Re the latter, I've always been impressed by how well the classical music was so organically integrated into the mood and action of the film's scenes. Fantastic movie that holds up so well over the decades.

I woke up one Friday morning, and while getting ready to go to college turned on the television and heard Gene Shallit on NBC reviewing this film. I remember verbatim the following: “not only is breaking away the best movie of the year, it may be the best movie of any year!“. The years have passed, but I’m still not sure he was wrong.

It was nice to see the bitter dad come around towards the end of the movie. I can tell he was inspired by the Cutters’ passion.

I have not seen this movie YET, but I will. In 1979 I had a two year old, and I was going to nursing school. I had a husband working full time and going to college. We didn't get out much. My favorite movie from my childhood, that I did see in the Coleman theater, when I was six, was To Kill A Mockingbird.

In 1979 I was learning to ride a bike... no training wheels. I was also watching Star Trek and Batman and the Electric Company reruns on a black and white TV perched atop a color TV. I didn't actually see this film until probably 81 or 82 when it was on HBO nonstop. By then we had upgraded to a color tv (Curtis Mathis) and cable. Thanks Gordon Cooper for giving Larry (my stepfather) a great job. Those were good days.

This really is a forgotten classic. People forget they tried to turn it into a tv show. I think it lasted 1 or 2 seasons.

Favorite movie from my childhood will sound like cheating but the Godfather I & II are 1a and 1b. I loved them as a kid and I even read the book by Mario Puzo.

They are well made films and that can't be refused. I've never read the books, but I've seen the films a few times. I saw the second one before the first. Have you seen The Offer?

@quantumfoam and I saw that in the theater together. It was at the old CineMark at 68th and Memorial in Tulsa. I think it's gone now. Back then it was one of the few theaters in town with THX.

Patch Adams is a movie I've not thought about in a long time. I saw it in the theater and really liked it.
