www.amazon.com/...
My favorite scene of episode 1, `Box Cutter', from season 4 of Breaking Bad. With all of the attention the Gus Fring box cutter scene is getting--unforgettable as it is--I fear this sequence is being overlooked.
Here the actors are pitch-perfect. Their eyes say more than words. Ultimately this scene brings us what we all crave: more insight into Walt and Jesse's ever-changing relationship--the core of the series.
Everyone knows how great Cranston is, but let's show some more Aaron Paul love. Watch; he's amazing in this scene.
// SPOILERS AHEAD //
Walt and Jesse convene in a local Denny's after Jesse executes Gale, and the two of them witness Gus brutally dispatch Victor in retaliation. Despite his shattered emotional state, Jesse ironically shows the most clarity, while Walt struggles to grasp the implications.
// END SPOILERS //
I do not own the copyright to this material, and no infringement is intended. You can view the entire episode for a limited time on amctv.com and I encourage you to do so.

You know, now that I watch this years later, this is probably the only time Jesse Pinkman as a character has full control of the scene over Walter White. Walter is constantly worrying and trying to get Jesse to be on edge as he is, but Jesse gets the picture and truly believes Gustavo will not find chemists like them. A lot of times when Jesse tries to put on confidence he just acts stupid cocky and is immediately put back down, usually by Walter, but here, he's unmoving. It really feels good that in this one moment Jesse is the calm one practically telling Walter "Shut up and eat your food, I know where we stand with our boss." I think this has become my new favorite of underrated scenes in Breaking Bad.

I wish I knew what it would be like if Jesse sided with Gus and Mike instead of Walt. Jesse proved himself against the cartel, cooking just well enough to beat them, and he is a hell of a lot easier to deal with than Walter and his insatiable ego Of course the series would stop with Walters death, no more danger and drama because the only person causing most of the issues is dead, but a Gus run crime world, with Jesse as his head cook, would be interesting to see for one day

I love all the subtle signs of stress Aaron puts into his performance here. The way he keeps looking out the window as Walter talks, his legs shaking at random, the tired look of resignation on his face, it perfectly encapsulates the look of someone who just murdered a man and watched another die right in front of him in the span of less than 24 hours. Sitting at a Denny's and eating breakfast is the closest thing he's had to a normal activity in all that time, and he's just *tired* of Walt dredging it all up while he's eating. So, he just shuts down Walt's conversation (who is normally the one leading their conversations in the first place) just so he can have a moment to himself before the next inevitable tragedy. Perfect scene.

What I got from this scene was that Walt is focused on discussing a follow-up plan, while Jesse is laid-back and desensitized. It’s almost like Jesse is in shock and isn’t really grasping the seriousness of the situation. This can also be demonstrated by their new clothes. Notice that Walt still has the sticker on his shirt, whereas Jesse has taken the time to remove it. Also, Jesse has ordered a big plate of pancakes and orange juice, while Walt has ordered nothing but a cup of coffee (caffeine to keep his mind straight). It proves their separate positions and mindsets in this scenario.
@Emerardo
@Emerardo 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree, I think Jesse was thinking more rationally then Walt. Its true Jesse wasn't as serious as Walt, but he does grasp the situation. He said himself that Gus's way of thinking is "if I cant kill you, youll wish you were dead." Jesse is right, if Gus wanted to kill them he would have already. But Gus did need them, so he didnt. But I do agree, their mindsets are completely different. It does seem Jesse is desensitized, I mean hes eating pancakes after watching two people die in front of him not too long ago.
@Thraxraganharapollyus
@Thraxraganharapollyus 4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps Jesse is desensitized, perhaps he had already resigned himself to what is essentially a guarantee that he'd likely watch people die in that particular business, whereas Walter White had not(evidenced by his reaction to a rather messy inconvenience). Overcoming tragedy/inconvenience early on, following up with thinking about the future and your place in it? He's in the right line of work, he's learning more about what it takes all the time and he's got the right mindset to boot! I've never watched the show, just clips. Perhaps you know something I don't about his *deep and tragic backstory* , but I think I've read his stance in this situation pretty well. Comment below if you think I've got it wrong and why, gimme your two cents, etc.!

@dwnl3493 3 жыл бұрын
@@Emerardo I agree with you. However, in the broader spectrum of things, Jesse is more experienced in the drug world than Walter. As soon as Gus let them live, Jesse knew the score. Walter is over thinking the situation and over simplifying things by thinking Gus would kill them first chance he got. Jesse was much more attuned to the situation and was able to set Walt straight. This ties into something Jesse told him earlier in the series: 'You might know how to make meth, but you know jack about slinging dope'. This show has many instances where Jesse actually demonstrates a level of intelligence that surprises Walter, coming up with things that never crossed his mind (magnets, for example).
@Dracinard
@Dracinard 3 жыл бұрын

This is one of those scenes where Jessie understands the game better than Walt ever really will be capable of. In a way, Walt's background makes him too square for what he's involved himself in. Jessie, by virtue of having been a junkie, a dealer and just someone who had the unfortunate path of interacting with some truly terrible people, understands the essence of where they actually stand.

It's crazy how chemically dissimilar Walt and Jesse are, yet 2 halves of the same whole. Walt with his brilliance and distrust, immediately paranoid changes into a stable calculative plan via revenge, meanwhile Jesse, who is simpler and impressionable believes that by killing Gale and complying with Gus's demands has built them immunity but the guilt of what they had to do grows; this ironically leads to him being more trusted and reliable; they are both right about their disposition and saying opposite things. They aren't opposites but their morals are perpendicular. It's like Walt becomes worse and worse minus his attachment to his family(s) meanwhile Jesse only needs to get worse through necessity, yes he's ultimately deciding to put himself in bad situations but it's clear that he's reluctant and in a small way becoming better with his distaste towards where this lifestyle is leading him. I wonder if he'll name his son Walt.
