Even if through donations, they would only have been able to use a fraction of what Walt really had, which still meant a mediocre life. Skylar was the main problem aside from Walt’s ego.

Well, kinda the WHOLE POINT of the series is that Walt always felt he was destined to achieve some type of “greatness” but was never able to actually grasp it. Now, whether that was ENTIRELY because of his own shortcomings or because he got screwed over, it’s hard to say EXACTLY. But the point is: his EGO was grievously WOUNDED by the Gray Matter situation years before and he “carried a chip on his shoulder” for all the years FOLLOWING THAT, feeling that he was OWED something.
