Fun Fact! 🙂 The pizza thrown on the roof was planned in the script and Bryan Cranston, who plays Walter, nailed it on the first take! Here's a quote from Bryan Cranston 🙂 "...they were prepared with special effects, a lightweight rubber pizza, there was a prop guy ready to pull a fake pizza up to the roof. We had all kinds of things ready to go. But I said, let me just try it. So, I’m coming out and I’m pissed and I fling the pizza and I didn’t even look at it. I fling the pizza and I get in the car and I drive away. And I did all that and I hear clapping as I’m driving back. I look up and there’s the pizza. They said if they had marked where would be the optimal place for the pizza to land, it would be where it landed. One of those freak accidents that’s like “Here it is, we did it! There it is!” And sure enough, they said “let’s do another take,” and it never happened again."

@@system0fadowner251 Season 3 was peak BCS. Near perfection. Season 4 was really good, but I think they dropped the ball with the (you-know-what) construction storyline, because it dragged on too long and wasn't very interesting. Nacho's story also went absolutely nowhere.

@@system0fadowner251 Oh, don't get me wrong, I love slow burns if the story is interesting enough (Madmen, House of Cards, etc). Even BB is a slow burn and contemplative, to the point where many impatient people complained that the pacing was "bad". I just personally feel that season 4 was slow to a fault. And the Huell plotline seemed like the writers were flexing their narrative creativity, at the expense of making total sense. Jimmy and Kim going through *all* that effort for one person they were only semi-close with didn't make much sense to me. It would probably help if they showed or explained that Jimmy was longtime friends with Huell or something.

Have you guys not seen how cartels dispose of their enemies? It usually not just a shot to the head. This is why the cartel asassin brothers carry the axe. They want revenge and it has to be messy. Walt is definitely in deeper than he can possibly understand. The Cartels have taken notice and are not happy that Tuco is dead.

It was agreed between Jesse's Aunt & his parents that Jesse would get half of what the house sold for, after she was gone. His parents reneged on that agreement, so Jesse/Saul made it happen. I think the reason the twins blew up the truck is because they saw that the talkative man understood who they were. If you rewatch you can see them look at him then look at eachother right after he looks away. Maybe they would've blown it up anyways, I don't know.

The colors, especially the colors the characters wear, are intentional & very linked to their mindset, and very connected to their character arcs. There is a KZbin vid about it, but it's full of spoilers, so don't watch it til the end of the series. It will blow your mind how much thought & effort went into matching the color palette to the different moods & characteristics of everyone.

Podcast notes: (Guests: writer Peter Gould, RJ Mitte [Walter Jr], Betsy Brandt [Marie]; Dean Norris [Hank]. co-hosts = Editor Kelly Dixon & showrunner Vince Gilligan) 1. Title means Horse with No Name, which is the song Walt sings at the beginning of the ep. It was originally going to be Southern Cross by CSNY, & they wrote tons of references to it into the ep, but then they couldn’t get the rights so they had to change tack. 2. The way they write is character-based. If they have a plan for where they want something to go down the line, but as they’re writing the plan doesn’t make sense for the characters, they’ll throw that plan out as they won’t force characters to do things just to set things up for themselves. They want moment to moment for characters to behave in ways that are true to themselves. ❤️ 3. The actor (Jay Taylor) who plays the officer is a fire chief in Texas 4. The lady who owned the house that they used for Jesse’s house sold it, so they couldn’t shoot there anymore from the start of s2, which is why they wrote it being sold. This season, the house has been redone by the new owners, who built an addition & remodeled, so it looks different. 5. The axe the Cousins use is made by the same company that made the one Jack carries around in the Shining bc they wanted one that looked like/was a reference to that 6. They were all worried about how to get the pizza to come out of the box, land on the roof, & stay there. They had talked about CGI, or having someone on the roof to place it & then get edited out, or piecing shots together. But then Bryan nailed it on the first take! And never got it again after that, so what we see is the first take.

Michael Bond Just search for Breaking Bad wherever you listen to podcasts. It was Kelly Dixon’s idea originally for them to put out a podcast after each episode where they talked with different folks involved in making that one. They released it the day after each episode aired, starting with S2E1. She and Vince cohost. They do one for Better Call Saul, too, but with different co-hosts. Caballo Sin Nombre translates to 'A Horse with No Name' which is not only the song Walt sings in the cold open, but operates as the overall theme for the episode. Walt has no idea of the "horse's name" he's riding (aka the criminal underworld) and how expansive and connected the people are who he's come across. He's blind to the impending danger that surrounds him, (quite literally at the end). The teddy bear's eye sort of represents the universe being aware of Walt's actions (Guilt). Also Jesse, who has accepted himself as the 'bad guy', can be seen as a horse with no name as well after partnering up with Saul to buy the house anonymously. The show always has great subtext like this.

I never payed attention to the names of the episodes before. "Caballo sin nombre" means "Horse with no name", that's the song from the band "America" Walt is singing in the car and later in the shower. The song is about the feeling of being in the dry, hot desert in New Mexico. So I guess nothing in this show is random.

Just so you know, Vince Gilligan has said that colors are important to the mood and emotions of each character. Like how Steven noticed that Skylar is always wearing that shade of Blue. Hank is always in orange, Marie is Purple and Walt is that Beige/Yellow sort of color.

It's not so much Walt can't help being "Heisenberg" as he likes the way it feels and he's allowing his newfound aggression and confidence into all aspects of his life, rather than exercising restraint. He also seems to misunderstand what he get away with, since he's acting out in times where it's better to stay silent. Also, I'm not sure if you guys ever connected the dots bc I didn't hear either of you mention it, but the name Heisenberg comes from Heisenberg's law in chemistry.

Yeah, I think it might be able to be even viewed simpler than that as it's simply as though Walt's cancer diagnosis has naturally made him question his life and existence after twenty-five years of always doing the right thing with little to no reward, in particular financially, like he questions, "What's the point of always doing the right thing anymore"? and Hank eggs him on to gain an interest in meth by revealing how much money drug dealers make breaking the law while he has 2 jobs and comparatively makes nothing in return.... So he naturally questions morality, right vs wrong, and his own existence within those philosophies and finally decides "Screw it, I'm sick of doing the right thing; I'm going to take some chances for once in my life and do what I really want to do and say what I really feel like saying as opposed to always appeasing everyone and biting my tongue" and takes Hank's advice to "get some excitement in his life", and the cancer diagnosis and emotional turmoil of that blindsiding health problem are basically driving him off the deep end because he just doesn't care anymore bc his life sucks. The show is really a good study of how an unfortunate health diagnosis potentially could realistically change someone's views and behavior.

This early season 3 is a big continuation of the dark humor from season 1...Walt's just this milquetoast teacher dealing with his domestic normal life troubles trying to win his family back, while apparently there's this much bigger world out there going on around him that he doesn't know about. His unassuming demeanor while these evil twins with an axe roll up in front of his house, along with the opening sequence when he gets pulled over and then pepper sprayed is downright funny and dark humor. Walt's a character. Walt's societal domestication has conditioned him to be an everyday teacher once he is removed from his meth cooking, which he hasn't done in over a month now. There's a lot going on symbolically that is really humorous like this concept that this nerdy older dad is cooking meth that has involved him with people like these twins, who are obviously bad guys out to kill him.

Some of the dialogue is on Seinfeld-level of funny at times. 4 and 5 get more serious consistently, but personally I still think they have plenty of funny lines and dialogue in them, too. I now watch Breaking Bad most of the time with this dazed smile on my face the whole time because the whole thing is just so entertainingly funny when you know what's going on. The first time I watched it I had the same smile a lot (I remember the first time was when I saw Saul's office, which was great satire) and laughed often, but now I just laugh through the whole thing (except for the really dark parts)….Walt reminds me of my grandfather in many ways- his thought process, mannerisms, and dialogue, and the way he works around the house and stuff. He could be a real person- that's how I know. My grandfather also had lung cancer, but he was in his 70s and smoked all his life.

“Those boys from Juarez” means the cartels. There is a huge cartel presence in Juarez. The show creators throw these little details in and don’t spell everything out because they didn’t want to fall into the trap most shows do of assuming the audience is dumb and needs everything explained through exposition.
