Walt's deadly sin is absolutely Pride. He is still so embittered about Gretchen and Elliot becoming rich and successful off of his formulas, while he got a measly pittance out of it, that he just cannot stand other people getting credit for his work.

The worst part is, from what Vince has said, it was Walt who was responsible for all of that in the first place, he just shifts the blame to them as part of his victim complex.

"Since when do vegans eat fried chicken?" One of my favorite moments in the whole show. Depressed PTSD Hank is gone, Agent fucking Shrader is finally back. I think you're on the right track with "was Hank talking about Gale", ish. I don't think he was literally talking to Walt or suspected him at that point, but I do think we the audience are meant to consider how his words applied to Walt, and that Walt as the real Heisenberg felt like it was directed at him even though he knew it wasn't *actually* directed at him.

Podcast Notes: Shotgun Guests: Betsy Brandt (Marie), Dean Norris (Hank), Jonathan Banks (Mike), Director Michelle MacLaren, Writer Tom Schnauz 1. Bryan did some of the driving in the opening. Most of it was a stunt driver named Laurence Chávez who also does Bruce Willis’ stunt work. He was such a perfect double for Bryan that they could shoot him from any angle. 2. Jonathan did a ton of digging! He hurt his knee at one point. When he rubs down the alley, he was in pain from that injury 3. Time lapse crew is from LA & flies out. They had a new setup they wanted to launch on BrBa. Every move Jesse & Mike has to do, they had to act out for a full minute (“puck your underwear out of your butt!” = Aaron picking his butt for a minute 😂 4. Walt blows up about Gale bc he’s lost control, and he needs to be in control. He has gone hunting for Jesse, who was oblivious to what he’s gone through, he had to talk to his wife about whether he’s allowed to move back in, Walt Jr drank out of a Beneke mug, and here’s Gale being called a genius & getting credit for his own brilliance. 😫 5. Hank & Marie - more about feeling badly for both characters in this situation, and about how much they love each other 6. They had to learn how to drive forklifts. Well, Bryan didn’t really, because Walt was to be bad at it. 7. Building the superlab - they’d gotten help from someone in the DEA. You *could* technically cook meth in that lab. 8. Accident - Vince wanted to shoot a t-bone like he’s never seen one filmed before. The stunt guys wanted to film it practically! (on camera, not through cgi) 9. BrBa was originally going to be set in Riverside, CA. It ended up in Albuquerque due to tax incentives

Blind Wave and the Normies are more interested in having their content last infinitely than actually finishing shows. Some time far in the future, they want to end their youtube career before they "run out" of content. So they make everything take forever, so that there is always a good show they haven't gotten to.

At dinner together Hank told them they found Heisenberg (or Gale). Then Walter says the notes appeared to be just a copy but not from the real Heisenberg - enforcing the idea Heisenberg is still out there. I think if Hank was previously suspicious of Walter he'd now have to wonder why Walter is saying something to make Hank think Heisenberg may still be out there. Right? It's illogical for Walter to say that if he was actually Heisenberg. You would expect Walter to reinforce the idea of Heisenberg being dead.

Shotgun has multiple meanings in this episode: 1) obviously the reference to Jesse riding in the passenger seat with Mike driving around the state all day 2) even more obvious reference to the 'attacker' with a shotgun that Jesse stopped 3) Walt's absolute, character-defining refusal to play 2nd fiddle to any other person - he won't ride shotgun for his wife - he won't ride shotgun for Jesse - he won't ride shotgun for Gale - his ego won't ride shotgun for his/his family's safety & freedom

That was one of Walt's dumbest moves. Walt's biggest weakness is his ego. He can't stand not being the center of attention or not being as appreciated he feels he should be. First he feels disrespected by Gus, then Mike, then Titus, the Jesse and then seeing the Beneke mug reminded him of being disrespected by Skyler. You put that altogether and then add wine to the mix and well, you saw what happened. Hank was ready to put the Heisenberg case to bed but Walt couldn't stand to let someone else get credit for his meth on top of all the other disrespect he had received that day. So yeah, you definitely wanted to hit Walt there. As for the Jesse situation, Gus knows he needs to keep Jesse busy so he'll stop being reckless and get out of his depression. And if Jesse feels heroic and important then he'll be much more engaged in the work he's doing. Plus there's the added bonus of taking Jesse away from Walt pissing Walt off. 💰🍷🗣🐓

I am really enjoying watching the show along with you for the first time. I always watch the episode in the morning and then your reaction about lunchtime. I don't think Hank suspects Walt at this point, but clues are entering his brain. I have my own theory about how this will end, but I won't voice it here because I do not want to influence you at all. The writing on the show is brilliant, but I did have a little trouble believing that Skyler would react the way she did to Walt's phone message. I thought she would immediately call him out about still keeping secrets. But I guess Skyler desperately wanted things to get back to "normal." Her haircut is clearly designed to attract Walt. She is hoping that the car wash will wash away their troubles, but, obviously, it won't. I have no doubt that while Hank's comments about Gayle were not aimed at Walt, the comments clearly struck home with Walt. That, along with too much wine, made Walt say way too much. Skyler is not going to be pleased and the repercussions next episode should be interesting. As for Jesse, Gus realizes that Jesse doesn't care whether he lives or dies, which makes Jesse extremely dangerous in many ways. Gus could kill him, but Gus needs Jesse because Walt needs Jesse so Gus is trying to give Jesse a reason to live. He cannot motivate Jesse through fear because Jesse is so miserable that he has no fear.

I just watched this episode. Is it possible that Walter isn’t letting his ego get the best of him but he’s in fact trying to lead Hank to Gus and get him killed since he can’t get to him? Maybe this all happens before he’s replaced

Walt's pride is the only real villain that's consistent all the way throughout the show. if he hadn't told hank that heisenberg is still out there, he wouldn't have kept the search going. he never ever wants people to copy off of his work from the day he left gray matter all the way to the show's present. even when it's not the best outcome for him.

Hank was absolutely talking about Walter without even realizing it. It's some irony for the audience to enjoy and it shows us that ultimately, Walter cares more about his ego than anything else. If he had kept quiet, it's very possible that Hank would have accepted that Gale was Heisenberg and Walter could have had a way out, but he doesn't want out; he wants all the credit.

I think Gus's reasoning behind having Jesse with Mike was multi-layered. Perhaps it was in part to keep Jesse sober, so that Mike could keep an eye on him, and so that he could have a heroic experience. But also I think it was to take Walt down a peg by showing him that Jesse actually does have value, too and not just Walt. Plus, as Gus has stated many times, he has a major investment in his meth lab and he needs to keep control over everything!

I think Gus had it out for Walt once he found out more about Hank's DEA position and especially after Walt chose someone (Jesse) over Gus when he ran over two of his men. It looks like this is where Gus rehabilitates Jesse to take over for Walt so he can kill Walt.

Walt had there his classical hubris moment! And as always, where hubris is, nemesis, sooner or more soon yet, follows. And it seems the inner gears of his hugiant overproud ego are now starting to suspect Gus is going to pull some plan B (or plan J, maybe?) on him... So sad: when a tumor metastasizes like that, its end often is nigh...

It'd be really awesome if Walter actually planned on Hank doing what he did. Walt did look at the files and saw what was in there. If he had planned this, It would have been the ultimate way to take down Gus, I just don't see him snitching regardless of what happens.

My guess is that their reaction is entirely based on Hank saying "WW" was "Walter White" without a jokey tone and Walt's "You got me!" response a few episodes back when Hank was showing Gale's notebook to Walt.

Regarding Hank mentioning Walt's name as a potential Heisenberg: I think Hank definitely saw the pieces coming together. It does make sense, Walt is super smart, a former chemistry teacher. But there are a lot of other pieces that don't seem to fit -- and I think the biggest one, for Hank, is that Walt is his family. You're right, Hank feels like he is (was) really good at his job, so pride and denial in this case are causing him to shrug off Walt as a candidate, because if he is right about Walt, then that means he was seriously duped and he's actually terrible at his job.

I was that person yelling at the screen pissed off at Walt. Sometimes I think that he WANTS to get caught. We've seen him get the rush of power before but now he likes the rush of almost losing everything but at the very last minute it all works out for him and he gets high off of that. He just couldn't keep his mouth shut. Oh Walt. This might sound a little odd and I don't think this is intended by the writers, but person Walt has parallels with is Hitler. Both Walt and Hitler felt cheated and took loss personally (Hitler took the loss of WWI personally and Walt his lack of conventional masculinity and people recognizing his genius). They both felt cheated in life so they took matters into their own hands and did some terrible things (obviously Hitler is a lot worse than Walt, but same idea). Both of their tragic flaws (a bit of Shakespeare for ya) were their ego. Walt let Hank know about Heisenberg still being out there and Hitler attacked Russia in the winter because he thought he could win. I've thought about this a lot before and it's so facinating to me. All hail the king.

Put yourself in Hanks’ shoes.. of alllllll the people in Albuquerque (even if it’s not that big, it’s still a fairly decent sized city) you would suspect your brother in law? The brother in law who has proven time and time again over the years that he is beaten down, downtrodden and soft. Walt is, by all respects, a law-abiding, loving father and nerdy brother-in-law to hank. I don’t think even a speck of suspicion would even seep into hank’s mind, but that’s just me. Plus, like Jesse said in the first season, it is fairly unusual (but not unprecedented) that a 50 something year old man just breaks bad. Usually criminals, especially career criminals, follow a fairly predictable trajectory from adolescence onward. That is the profile. And even if a criminal chemist may fit a different profile, it’s still not really that common for a man to work honestly most of his life and then just risk it all as he’s entering the twilight of his life. If this was the case then hank would be actively investigating all of the chemistry teachers in ABQ, and all of the organic chemists, etc. The bottom line is that Walt doesn’t fit the profile, and what’s more he fits even less because hank intimately knows him- he’s family. So Steven stop overthinking it!!! Lol hank is good but not that good
