Regarding the bear... Just for what it's worth, they planned *very little* out ahead of time. Vince has always been very forward about that. Rather, they constantly went back through older episodes and found elements to bring forward and payoff in their new scripts. Instead of planning everything out, Vince likes to develop stories organically and sequentially, and he thinks that when you get an idea for a scene and start writing to that moment, you lose authenticity. The writers' room intentionally wrote the characters into corners that were nearly impossible to resolve, at which point they would often spend days trying to figure out how the characters would realistically react and escape.

Yeah. The teddy bear foreshadows Gus's death only in hindsight. That is, they didn't have Gus's death in mind when creating the teddy bear in the first place. But when they decided on how to kill Gus, they saw the burned face of the bear and thought.. "be kindof cool to do something like that, wouldn't it?"

JMO, I have BB #2. True Detective Season 1 is the GOAT in my mind. Walt may be my 2nd favorite character, but after Rust Cohle for sure. It's a shame these two were airing at the same time. So many people missed out on TD due to BB or just not having HBO. If you haven't seen TD Season 1, do yourself the biggest favor in the world, watch it, and pay attention! So worth it.

Podcast Notes: Live Free or Die Guests: co-exec producer & writer Tom Schnauz; producer Diane Mercer 1. There was some possibility that amc wasn’t going to bring BB back for a fifth season. They felt like the end of four was a good conclusion if that happened (though they had definite ideas for season 5 & that wasn’t the actual end of their story) 2. The season being broken up into 2 eight episode mini-seasons allowed them the time they needed in production to ensure the quality was where they wanted it 3. The Denny’s scene - not product placement, they just liked Denny’s as a meeting point so used it again. That was the first scene shot as they did it before Bryan shaved. 4. The machine gun is the same model as Rambo’s 5. AMC exec Brian Bochrath (no idea on spelling) was an electrical engineer st a forklift factory or done thing & helped them with figuring out how to do the batteries 6. All the cops were real Albuquerque police, and that was a real police location 7. Super high security on this season’s footage...nothing is allowed to leave their editing studio, except by Vince, and even what he takes home has a giant watermark 8. That was wasp spray Mike sprayed at the cameras - it’s what burglars might in theory use because it sprays so far up into trees

The reason Breaking Bad has such perfect foreshadowing is because, when the writers are doing future episodes, they're looking back to see what symbols they've already made. They call it "backmining" because they have no idea what they're going to do next. Like with the machine gun, for example. Vince has said in numerous interviews he and his whole team have no idea where they're going with that.

Season 4 is probably the best in terms of pure acting performance from Bob Odenkirk, but a few of the episodes felt like filler. It also had some questionable character plot threads that slowed down the main story too much. That's the most I can say without spoiling anything. For me, the series become a 9 after season 3, but season 4 dropped it to an 8.5. Let's see if season 5 can raise it.

The show runner and writers did know that season 5 was the last one. They made an official announcement that season 5 would be the last season, which would have 16 episodes and be split into part 1 and part 2 which had the last 8 episodes. ALSO, it should be noted that when they were making season 4, they were not sure they would be picked up so they made that finale very conclusive. The wait between each season was a grueling year including between the first part of season 5 and the last part! Keep in mind that the long wait was due to meticulous writing and filming in ABQ.

Sorry if I'm not the first to mention this but remember at the beginning of the very first episode, Skyler made a "50" out of Walt's (veggie)bacon for his birthday breakfast. So, the beginning of this episode is exactly two years after the beginning of the show. Not sure how long it's been since the end of last season, though. At least long enough for Walt to grow some hair. 🥓🧲💻🚛
