The character development in Breaking Bad is just unreal. The change from beginning to end with almost all of them is so radical but it’s so gradual at the same time so that by the time you get to the end...I don’t even know how to phrase it, exactly. It doesn’t feel forced. For all the annoying THIS WAS WHEN HEISENBERG WAS BORN, there’s really no one moment. For as much as people want to say it was Jane or Gale or Brock or whatever. Though I will say. Now that I think about it, Jesse seems somewhat forced. Like in Season 4, suddenly he’s this smart guy. Save me the APPLIED HIMSELF. You know what I mean and if your honest with yourself you know that your justifications don’t live up to the standards for the catalyst in change the characters have.

Also, i haven't seen anyone mention it, but Walter showed his cards right away too. Hank didn't know before Walt came that he found the tracking device. Walt was actually the one who confronted Hank in the first place. He could've just played ignorant and slowly try to figure out Hank's plan. Instead Walt just confronts him the next morning. So in all fairness, both of them could've made better long term decisions. But then we wouldn't have gotten that amazing "Tread lightly" scene. 🚽👊

That's the thing about Breaking Bad. There's no music reaching a crescendo, there aren't too many fast paced action or stunt sequences (just a few), heck there isn't even much raised-tone dialogue. Podcast Notes: Blood Money Guests: writer Peter Gould, Bryan Cranston (he directed), exec producer Michelle MacLaren, co-exec producer Melissa Bernstein 1. Original idea for open - house was going to be totally gone, like “an empty tooth in the mouth of the neighborhood.” Then they had the idea for Walt to be getting the ricin 2. Starting on the pool-it had just been a place of happiness and family, full, at the end of 5x08. contrast! 3. The “Hello, Carol” wasn’t in the script. That was an addition by Bryan while filming. 4. Sometimes, to get started writing, they start by discussing the “bad” ideas of things they aren’t going to do...though occasionally the bad ideas, once fleshed out, become good 5. This whole season was shot in winter. The coldest was 5x11, it was 5°F 6. They tried writing an option where Hank went to Walt to tell him to get out of it & give him a pass, but it didn’t fit Hank’s character 7. They were worried there wasn’t going to be enough humor this season. The Star Trek scene helped...Peter wrote it and thought it was way too long, but Vince ended up adding to it 8. Hank has a ptsd blackout in the car, but can’t get checked out bc he needs to get home and think things out. Walt shows up bc he knows what’s going on and needs to try to stall Hank from getting too far 9. Jesse/Walt is tragic...Vince thinks Walt is being sincere and fatherly (despite lying), though Jesse is terrified and trying to figure out how to play it 10. Bryan wanted $ to be physically, visually between them 11. Characters are winding down & also the actors realize it’s concluding, so they’re feeling that through these episodes 12. Walt kneeling on the towel to vomit = echoes of Gus 13. Why does Walt go outside? Something is gnawing at him. Did he not close the garage door? Will there be a strange car in the street? He doesn’t know what the instinct is 14. Hank isn’t hitting Walt because he’s angry, it’s physical, emotional pain bursting from his heart. It’s betrayal of his love and trust 15. Dedication to Kevin Cordasco - a 16 year old they met through Make a Wish who had been given a difficult cancer prognosis...he was probably their biggest fan, into the story, the complexity of it all. Vince said he learned about his own show from him. Vince asked what he’d like to see from the show, and what he responded with had him actually add something that changed the show. He sadly passed before the series ended. Rest In Peace, Kevin ❤️

Watching your reaction to this series in recent weeks I've picked up on how they use the size of Walt in certain scenes to great effect. There was a scene from season 3 where Walt was pretty much a dead man and everyone towered over him. It even looked like small tumbleweeds were larger than him. In the last scene of this episode, you see Walt towering over Hank which has rarely been shown in previous episodes as Hank for the most part has always been filmed having larger physical stature than Walt. It's great you can still discover new things through multiple watches.
