The Star Trek conversation isn't there just to have a goofy comic scene; it's thematically linked to the episode. The talk about a transporter creates a duplicate of you and how there's 147 Kirks is basically talking about how every time Walter lies, he's in effect creating a new version of himself, and so at this point he's just an artifical copy of a copy of a human being. Also, I think Badger talking about his script and stopping right when Chekov screams is a sort of meta reference to the writing concept of "Chekhov's Gun."

I like your review of this show overall, however, I do think you guys come off a bit sanctimonious when it comes to Walt. We tend to look at morality through the lens of black and white. And what this show does, better than any show I've seen, is highlight that the world can be more grey than anything. And the deciding factor into someone going either way is circumstance. Now, in the last video you wanted to know why people were still Team Walt. Granted, I have the benefit of seeing the show in its entirety, so I know how it ends. I know Walt's complete story arc. From my point of view, you have a man who's underachieved his whole life. And facing death with a cancer diagnosis, he's looking back at it wondering what he's leaving behind. In terms of both legacy and inheritance. I honestly believe his initial intentions were pure in regards to taking care of his family. Everyone talks about what they will and won't do until they're faced with adversity. Just trying to fight the cancer would've bankrupted the family. So I get him wanting to make a fast buck cooking meth. Now, he did get an out when Gretchen and Elliott offered to pay. But even then, a part of me understands not feeling like a charity case. None of this justifies selling drugs, but it does make me less righteously indignant about it. I'm not as dogmatic in my judgment towards him. Especially when you consider that everyone on that show started off horribly. Marie would be serving time in jail for stealing if Hank weren't her husband and was constantly bailing her out. Jessie killed people. He even went to a meeting for recovering addicts to sell drugs to the people there. But he had a good heart though right? Lol. Skylar was mad at Walt for selling drugs as if she wasn't fucking her boss who she knew was cooking the books at his company. We talk about morality as if it's black or white. And many times it can be. But it's those grey areas that require more nuance than just "he's bad and he's good". Now Walt did inevitably turn into a monster. But he didn't completely lose his soul. Once again, you haven't finished the series so.... I'll just say this, growing up in the environments I've grown up in, I've seen good people go bad. I grew up on Detroit's east side, I've seen the choices people make. It's hard being an angel when you're dealing with hell. I have friends who sold drugs, not because they wanted to, but because you don't see any other options to feed yourself or your family, you get desperate and resort to what's available. Walt got involved in a corrupt world that he was I'll equipped for at first. It was by sheer luck and quick wit that he was able to survive all that he did. Eventually that will corrupt you. You just saw that he was willing to leave the world behind, it's just that at that same moment Hank figured out who he was. I'm not saying that Walt didn't deserve consequences, or that he deserves a pass. I'm just saying his story is a bit more nuanced than just "bad guy cooks meth". He was a good guy who got desperate in the face of death, resorted to extreme measures to take care of his family, and while in that world the corruption brought out the worst in him. And seeing that he never fulfilled any of potential before, he relished the opportunity to be great at something. Even if it was a drug empire. But, eventually, he regained his soul to some degree. To me, it's an interesting case study more so than a cautionary tale. I'm team Walt not because I align with all of his decisions, but because I can relate to the character. I can understand the "why" while not agreeing with the "what". He's one of the most interesting characters in television history because he goes through this metamorphosis over the course of 5 seasons. And in the end, to me, he redeemed himself.
@cindycrewsbeach724 ай бұрын
You lost them in the first sentence. Sorry, their minds are made up.
@AfrikanCaesar4 ай бұрын
@cindycrewsbeach72 probably. But I used to look at the world the same way. I said I would never do certain things only to flirt with and entertain those things when I found myself in a situation. I used to think people who committed suicide were simply selfish. It wasn't until I hit a low point going through a divorce and losing my mother in the same year where I finally understood that you can find yourself so low and depressed that you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. It made me more empathetic to other people's circumstances as opposed to being judgmental. I get their disdain for Walt and his actions. But it does come off slightly sanctimonious. Especially when you juxtapose their assessment of Walt with their assessment of everyone else on the show. It doesn't seem as pious. But if we're looking at the issue if morality in such stark black and white, then no one on the show gets a pass.

When Walt said "I'm a dying man who runs a car wash, my right hand to God that is all that I am." He was technically telling the truth because at that point he was out of the meth making business. So he wasn't lying to Hank at that moment. Also Walter is correct if his Cancer is back, what would be the point of going after him if he will be dead in a few months? That's why Walter got into the Meth making business in the first place, knowing he was on his way out was the reason he did it. I once spent time in defensive driving and there was an old woman who was there for opening up her car all the way on a freeway when there wasn't anyone on it. A police officer stopped her and she wasn't one bit sorry. The instructor asked why she did it. She said "it was beautiful, I would have regretted not doing it." Everyone in the class laughed because she was of advanced age. But really if they threaten her with jail time what would be the point? She was really old.

He doesn't believe he still cares about him but he still does. It's so nice seeing the parallels of Fring using his chicken restaurant as a cover for his operations like Walt uses the car wash for his cover- Walt talking to Lydia at the register- trying to play it off like he doesn't know who she is reminds me so much of how Gus would be when Walt would visit him at Los Pollos. They even pay homage to the crystal ship and the episode Mandala when Walt tried to convince Gus to work with them with Lydia's line: "Get the ship back on course- we'll make it worth your while". Walt places a neatly folded towel under his knees in front of the toilet just how Gus would. The show also points in this direction when Mike tells Walt: "Just because you shot Jesse James, don't make you Jesse James". Jesse James was a famous train robber. Two episodes later we find out Walt and Jesse's train heist plan is successful. Mike was wrong about Walt, people like to give Mike too much credit because he's a more appealing character to most even though he's a criminal too. Walt had to take out Gus for his and his family's safety. What- was Walt supposed to just roll over? There were no pitchforks out when Walt had to kill Krazy-8...

This is all consequences of Walt’s choices. His need to feel alive has caused so much destruction around him

Yes you will notice Walt copies something from everyone he killed even if he didn't witness it happen

The producers talk about it like it was one season with an extended break... But it was seen by most as two 8 episode seasons.

Kailyn, your last comment I'm sure was authentically what you were/are feeling. I think what you haven't said is that there is no forgiveness for Walt until he is willing to stop lying, tell the truth, ask forgiveness and face the consequences by willingly give himself up to the law for the crimes he's committed. Even then I have no idea how he would repair the damage he's done to his family and everyone he's harmed. This series raises many questions about morality. One question I wrestle with is whether I support capital punishment. In cases where a murder is not premeditated, IE. a crime in the heat of passion, I am inclined to not want capital punishment. However, in the case of premeditated murder, in cases of serial murder or cases where suffering was intentionally inflicted leading to death I support that form of punishment. Walt is one of these.

It may be strange, but I never felt sorry for Hank in this scene. In my opinion, he was always quite hypocritical, always treated Walt arrogantly and condescendingly, as if he were a loser, and then Walt suddenly turned out to be two heads taller than him, and at the end of the dialogue, fear is clearly visible in Henk’s eyes - fear of Pandora’s Box, which accidentally opened. Here there is such a game with the viewer's perception - Mike, for example, is perceived exclusively as a positive character, although he is the same, if not worse, killer as Walt.
