“Blow Me Away” was the first of Ben’s songs I ever learned on guitar (it brought the band to my attention, but not from Halo, oddly enough), and I still play it from time to time. It’s such a high octane song, it’s a blast to play. Just the right mix of frenetic riffs, Ben’s ever-present staccato fret and palm muting, and soaring power chords. If you don’t play, learn. Trust me, with a good teacher to help you with the basics and a willingness to practice regularly no matter how crappy you THINK you sound, it’s absolutely worth it. The moment you realize you’re actually playing a song or riff right, and you can FEEL the music coming from your fingers, it’s like pure uncut serotonin flooding your brain. It’s addictive, and you’ll realize you’ve never TRULY experienced music until you’ve played it. There’s nothing like it. And it gets so much easier as you go that you’ll find yourself seeking out harder songs to learn even more. And a little secret: you ALWAYS sound like ass (expect it and be comfortable with it) when you’re first learning or writing a new song, but there comes a point where suddenly it just clicks and you’ve GOT IT, and then you’re just having a blast. The harder it was to learn or write, the sweeter than moment is, and it always arrives if you keep practicing. There’s something weird about how our brains work that’s putting everything together in the back of our minds even when you’re not practicing, it just makes that moment happen at some unpredictable moment when you’re giving it another try. It’s bloody actual magic. It’s like your muse just ambushes you and says, “You’ve got this, savor it.” Also, realize when to take a break. You’ll have points where a tricky riff keeps beating you. When you find yourself getting WORSE at it, set it aside and move onto something else, or take a breather from practice. Your mind has hit saturation, and it needs time to process what your fingers were trying to do. Additionally, whatever part you think will be the hardest will be the easiest, and the part you thought was easy will be hard. Dunno why, them’s just the rules. Songs will surprise you, but that’s part of the fun. Finally, some songs will just come to you like you always knew how to play them (Volbeat “Heaven nor Hell” and Three Days Grace “Never Too Late” were like that for me, for instance). Those are rare gems that’ll make you feel like a god. Revel in them.
