I was once told by a fireman, during a house fire next door, that if you see smoke coming from a building, even in wisps, there's already a serious fire inside. Don't ignore it. The people across the garden saw it and woke me up. If they hadn't, I certainly wouldn't be here to write this.

The old rule in boatyards was it would be burnt to the ground every generation (20 years). I was working in a yard in Belgium and lived next door to be awoken in the middle of the night by exploding gas cylinders as the next yard down burnt to cinder, that one was thinners-soaked rags chucked in a metal bin (traditional wood build historic ship). Modern yacht construction is much more difficult as there are far more fire sources, I've worked for a fair few years in superyacht yards (I do the propulsion and technical service engineering) and part of the job involved fire safety in my part. We were building up to five yachts in one building and it's impossible to do complete fire supression for all of it. For the individual vessels it's really difficult as the ships own supression system isn't there and activity in the various parts of the vessel varies drastically, not every compartment has workers in it all the time and even if a fire was detected evacuation is the first priority, we were about 500m from the local fire station and 1km from the fire service of a large chemical works but until ALL the staff were acccounted for they would restrict themselves to ensuring exits were clear and smoke supression. We had a CO2 flood-down system for inside each vessel for at night but during working hours it was required to be disabled. The materials, construction and design isn't conducive to fire protection in a ship under construction, the building industry have the same problem that all the systems aren't up and running during build. And for the lithium fire fans; we loaded two and a half tons of lead-acids in one day for the 24v night system, they were hooked up and smoke poured out of a control panel in the generator room. Just a pity that a premium battery manufactury could actually build one with the polarity reversed (and that's the third one I've seen in my career).

The boatyard I worked in burned down from the same cause: oil rags. There was so much heat and flame from all the construction materials that the entire 100,000 sq. foot building was reduced to ashes. Firemen just poured water on surrounding buildings to keep them from burning too. Boatyards are fires just waiting to happen!

@@Bigrignohio makes sense. I know quality is definitely a concern. Arson, however, is unacceptable. I don't care that people are fortunate enough to have yachts, so when people think its a 'good' thing to burn them to stick it to the wealthy, its just sad and frustrating. Edit: people also laugh and make fun of the owners because they are rich or 'super millionaires'. I wonder if they would laugh if their car, that was something expensive, got burned to the ground. Having worked so long to have my car, I would be devistated if someone burnt it. I am middle class and had to save up for years to buy (well the prevous car which got written off, then used the payout for a large deposit on what I havel now), and still have monthly payments. Their are plenty of yacht owners who buy on finance and save up just like some of us. Its really sad that people find the destruction of people's property funny, just because they are 'rich'.

@@letmejustsay not knowing - i can not say, however i have been involved in a few extensive refurbs & additions to very valuable commercial & private buildings. Contracts always cover insurance stipulations for all parties at various agreed stages of the project. There is not neccessarily just one way of doing things, but it is always discussed and agreed on before ink meets paper. Assuming that the client was making staged payments at he very least the vessel would have cover representing the total of money paid towards its purchase ant that cover would be bought by the purchasor unless agreed otherwise. Would the purchasor also buy insurance for loss of use & would the shipyard have insurance to cover any late delivery penalties? I dont know - but insurance litigators will be earning big fees before this is settled, we can bank on that ! It is also likely to be a big enough policy or set of policies that risk will have been spread via specialist reinsurance contracts & treaties….and these participants will also be in contact with their legal advisors already. The cause of the fire will be VERY important of course, and that will possibly be disputed - if disputing it potentialy reduces any loss a specific risk carriers faces.

Maybe Esysman can do a followup on the other fires that have happened at Lurssen last July and in 2018. Building these yachts takes lots of welding, cutting and other things that can potentially catch fire. I'm not surprised that fires happen, but I am surprised that they are not better contained when it occurs. It will be interesting to see if the results of the investigation are ever made public. Probably won't be because it's a private company.

In my experience it’s a combo of factors. The last 2 USN warships lost to fire during shipyard periods, the fires started during the day. They spread rapidly, they start in places that aren’t manned, and VERY quickly it consumes large spaces. Without more info, it’s very possible the fire started in a more remote spot, and a smaller yard may not have a robust fire response team on-site, so if not responded within 10min or so, the fire can be uncontrollable.

Fire suppression systems are a good investment. These fires are preventable and the potential to reduce damage is a plus with suppression systems. I just dont get it! Millions and Millions of dollars but no suppression systems.

We don't know what the cause was, we don't know if the building was on fire and took the yacht with it. Also the fire suppression on the yacht would not have been working as the yacht is still being built.

One of those electical fires based on battery banks? The sort of batteries used in electric cars? I would not be suprised. Too money people love the idea of electric this and that and the batteries ae highly flammable--nearly impossible to extinguish.

Wow, I feel bad for the head of Lursen having to make that call to the owner. Sad to see such a tragedy, relieved to hear that there was only one injury from this fire.

In the 80-90' large fires with Super yachts were extremely rare. These days it is becoming a little too often..... The use of less trained personnel is the problem or even arson?

I have been inside that building on an organized tour. Theres no room to swing a cat. Shit everywhere an accident waiting to happen. The building is too small for the ships built in there.

Wonder if Lurssen will go bust? lose a facility like this, ruins future orders, then refunds, staff still have to be paid, not to mention existing orders.

@@mikemoxley9477 ahhhhh, give @darrenedmonds1163 a break. Yes, he misspelled waste with waiste. But in the video the guy couldn't even say the right name of the canal: North-Baltic-Sea-Canal...... that even misstranslated the German name of the canal: Nord-Ostsee-Kanal. Either he should have said North-Eastsea-Canal wich would have been the word by word translation, or he should have used the international name for the canal: Kiel-Canal. But then to be fair he got an relativly good pronouciation of the town where the shipyard is: "Schacht-Audorf" isn't the easiest word for an English speaker. (There is probably just this one which is worse for any English speaking person: "Geesthacht" which is a town just east of Hamburg at the river Elbe)
