They don't need much thrust - any serious engine would rip the ISS apart - but when it comes to the final descent, they do need to decelerate as quickly as possible to ensure it comes down in the right place. The bottom of the South Pacific is a big target, but the faster it's orbiting, the less precision they've got... the more it slows, the steeper the trajectory, and the more precise the impact point.

I wish SpaceX would make an alternative proposal. Rather than deorbit, modify a Starship to be a space tug, refuel it as necessary, and boost the ISS to a garage orbit outside of GEO. And perhaps put a few Optimus onboard for maintenance or continued scientific work. That would be so much better than burning it up, even if it was only for preserving history.

I don't think it was a bad decision, without the vertical tank farm, the early test campaign wouldn't have happened as soon as it did. Without the vertical tanks, the belly flop maneuver wouldn't have been tested. Every test and innovation brings results, just because they are removing the tanks now doesn't mean they had no value.

To continue to use the vertical tanks now would fall into the "sunk cost fallacy". They contributed value when they were needed, now to keep them functioning would be sunk cost. At the time the tanks were built, SpaceX couldn't get adequate tanks to support the test campaign, but now they finally have purpose built horizontal tank farms and the vertical tanks are obsolete.

why are they using rigid beams and not a set of rollers to prevent marring the side of the booster? if the had horizontal springs or hydraulics they could touch the side of the booster without worrying about screeching metal against it and keep the guide rails in line with the catch points.

In order to get enough fuel into space, the size of the Starship will have to be taller. There is a benefit to a longer rocket body in the harmonics of the vibrations. My first guess was the Starship is about 1/3 of the needed size. The problem with getting up into those wind channels is overcoming high wind issues. This may cause a limit for the max length of the rocket. Some think a changing to a 15 meter diameter, but that will come will more engines and a great complexity. The only limits SpaceX faces are imagination and basic physics.

Either Bennu is the most unusual asteroid in the solar system or water was present on light bodies making the asteroids comet-like in the early solar system. If those clays on Bennu came from an earthlike planet, how much of the planet would have water-modified minerals? Just the super-thin crust, right? The other 99% would have no clays, so this is either an unusual asteroid made from the crust of a planet, or we need a different explanation of where the water came from.

You guys remember one of the theories of how the Earth's Moon formed? Another planet that crashed into the Earth leaving a huge hunk in orbit, the Moon, and some of the the pieces crashing back onto the Earth and the new Moon, and the rest in an orbit that had it passing nearby the Earth's orbit? What if Benu is a piece of that collision? It would explain why it has chemical compounds that can be found in the sea bed.

My guess why only certain areas are getting the ablative underlayer and the nose DIDN'T, is because the nose is a high-flow (no restrictions) area and there is minimal heat buildup as a result. _(or minimum risk of tiles falling off)_ Whereas the belly is much wider, so slightly more restriction to plasma flow. Plus the flaps, introducing even more restrictive pathing.

Hmm, watching the catch tests, I'm not convinced that it's ready yet. There's too much bounce to it which could potentially be catastrophic. Then there's the nature of the catch itself. Will the booster and starship slide down the rail a short distance or will they try to precisely catch it just under the pin? If that bounce happens at the wrong time it could miss the pin. But then again there should be no bounce at all. Secondly, I haven't seen any evidence of a precise pinpoint landing accuracy. It would be in SpaceX's best interest to have a specific special test catching tower at a safer distance from the main facility. That way, if something does go wrong, damage will be minimal. And I don't want to hear wannabe space wetting themselves over it when their rockets are even more hazardous than SpaceX's rockets. Those astronauts on the starliner were very lucky this time. Better to have Crew Dragon bring them back and send starliner back uncrewed just to be safe.

I was thinking about how you said ship 32 might get scrapped, but they are testing it's mate booster 14. What if they successfully capture booster 12 on flight 5 (next one), and Elon feels bold enough to try to capture the starship 31 on flight 6, after catching booster 13 or ditching it in the ocean (because of it's lucky number). Then if they capture starship 31, they relaunch it on top of booster 14 to show re-usability. I know it sounds insane but so is Space X, which is why they are so cool...

With the ablative coating and dumped HS ring, reuse isn't in the cards anytime soon. Until those steps away from reuse are reversed, it's essentially disposable. They may try to refly the first caught booster after extensive rework, though. Then we'll see where it's at.

A small clarification. You said that the Chang'e capsule landed in "Mongolia" - note that this refers to Inner Mongolia (i.e. part of China), not to the country of the same name. It's like saying "Mexico" when you actually mean the US state of New Mexico.

Y'know, with a little ambition, NASA etc could order a TransHab style module, inflate it, slice one end off, and slide the whole ISS inside to protect it, reattach the cap, then park it somewhere safe, like Geostationary Orbit. Heck, an object that size, covered in Starship tiles, would slow down pretty fast, bring the ISS back to Earth like a Ship in a bottle.

The cross-sectional shape of Starship is circular. At angles of attack used during reentry... the plasma flow will follow a more elliptical path - like a streamlined strut on an old bi-plane. With an elliptical path, there will NOT be a large bow shock and the boundary layer will be tight against the skin... resulting in considerable surface heating. No amount of tech-no tomfoolery is going to change that flow field. Change the Starship to look like a Space Shuttle without wings and vertical tail... sharply round the side edges, taping the sides to a round top... and move the control flaps up from the flattish reentry bottom to mid height along the sides - away from the side edge flow separation field. Something like the Convair T-18 Orbiter concept (sans the folding wings) ...BUT with the 4 control flaps.

Maybe the Catch Pins will not be adequate enough being too small a device and having to be too precise !!! Maybe a more efficient alternative would be to have a Slanted Catch Lip around the whole circumference of the Starship Booster ??? This way the Tower Arms can catch the Starship Booster much more safely and also the Slanted Catch Lip would also serve as an extra Grid Fin (knowing that there is a plan to reduce the number of Grid Fins from 4 to 3 for future Starship Boosters so that means there will be no extra weight involved) to slow the speed of the Starship Booster on re-entry back through the atmosphere !!! Also incorporated into the outer surface of the Slanted Catch Lip could be a series of Vortex Generators or Golf Ball Dimples in order to reduce the friction Drag on the Ascent through the atmosphere !!!

Thinking out loud could Endura Coating's Composite Diamond Coatings (CDC) Specifications Series 1100 formula be changed to be slightly improved to result in a higher temperature resistant diamond coating adhesion resilience, then coat Starship's many stainless steel heat prone surfaces like Flaps, and the non tiled Outer Space Facing on reentry unshielded fuselage side so that on re-entry heat could be wicked away by diamond coating from under the new two layer heat shield tiles, and the heat would leak into the plasma stream exiting as heat lost, and away from the stainless steel surfaces adding additional surface cooling. Possibly even stabilizing Starship even more on reentry by means of improved more stable, laminar plasma fluid flow dynamics when Starship is entering Earth's upper atmosphere in a less turbulent stream, which may decrease both flap, and fuselage unwanted abrasion. The benefit of the diamond coating is the removal of destructive heat from StarShip’s many plasma heating transitioning points, even wicking heat from tiled surfaces to non tiled surfaces to be dissipated away in the trailing plasma stream. Are there any thermal engineers out there who wish to comment on a three layered heat shield system comprised of diamond coated stainless steel surfaces, layer one heat shield, layer two heat shield. Re Bennu; re the Titius-Bode Law, re the early speculation that the asteroid belt used to be a planet: I had an early young-age enthusiasm for that vision. It then mostly died when I heard that total asteroidal mass was only a tiny fraction of a planetary mass. It then revived quite a bit when I read that the uneven momentum transfer possible in asteroidal collisions could eject one of the pieces out of the solar system. ... And now... this. If the water compatibility of Bennu-material data is confirmed, wouldn't that be a huge boost to the theory of the planetary origin of asteroids (or, at least of most of the non-Trojan ones)? If the water data are verified, let us again prioritize Vesta for investigation. Is it part of a planetary core, one more accessible than is Ceres?

@WAI note that in the June 28 media teleconference, they answered a question and said "we saw draining out was on the umbilical side not on the space suit side ". So not a spacesuit leak. They also said that this was not an unusual problem with those type quick connect disconnect liquid line valves. But, it sill might be a 40 year old part, or maybe not, if it is just a flex line that is easily replaceable, so might not be that old.
