Loved this , very interesting to hear about her life and experiences. I met Liv in 2004 at a theater on Cape Cod and had a nice talk with her. Watched Scenes from a Marriage recently, the first time since I first saw it in 1974 and was even more blown away by her great performance. Also, loved her in the wonderful films, 'The Emigrants" and "The New Land" with the late great Max Von Sydow. Saw 'Cries and Whispers" back in the early 1970s as well. Fabulous actress and humanitarian!

Absolutely love Bergman’s troupe of actors, Liv Ulman, Harriet Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, Max Von Sydow, Bibi Andersson, Gunnar Björnstrand, the list goes on! Bergman really knew talent when he saw it.

Woody Allen said that he worked with only 2 actors who blew him away. Max Von Sydow and Geraldine Page.

Thanks for the upload. I shall take my appreciation of Ingmar Bergman's work - and the artists who collaborated with him - to my grave. It was in part an affirmation of what I thought and did not / could not say but most of all it kept my mind ALIVE! This short videoclip [re-] ignited the embers I carry with me into the twilight of my life. Thanks again!

Thanks. Hopefully you'll take a moment to watch our Breaking Down Bergman series too. A few episodes are dedicated to diving into the Bergman archive in Stockholm. - David

That's amazing you got to interview her. I would have been sweating bullets! Were you nervous, David?

I wasn't nervous, but it was probably because the journey to Montreal was intense. I didn't think I'd make it. Here's the story: Breaking Down Bergman - Liv Ullmann and the Epic Trip to Montreal

Liv Ullman is a fricking genius. I thought her performance in Face To Face was her best. So complex and disturbing. 1976 gave us a lot of great female performances, and I can see how Dunaway won, but Liv was just as exceptional.

She has this very unique combination of confidence, intelligence, humility and shyness. I was very taken by her in the brief time we spent together. - David

Did she ever talk about her acting collaborations with Max von Sydow? Both she and he were Bergman's most used actors, they worked together a lot and I've never heard her talk directly about him. Nor have I ever heard of why Sydow stopped collaborating with Bergman or Ullmann.

Unfortunately we only had a small amount of time with Liv -- and I literally ran into that interview in a panic. Did you see the video about my turbulent journey to Montreal that day? Yikes! - David

Brian: Here's a good 2018 quote from Liv on Von Sydow, specifically about the '60s trilogy they did with Bergman (Hour of the Wolf/Shame/The Passion of Anna): ""Max von Sydow was wonderful, and we made many movies together. Ingmar when he directs never says, 'This is what you feel, and take a pause there,' and whatever. Ingmar gave us the lines and hoped we understood and we would create something from there. Max and I could discuss a little more. 'If I say it this way, what would you feel?' and we would talk about our feelings. We were very much alike, and he was so good. He wasn't like an 'actor,' you know, 'It's all about me and then it's you.' It was us together. "So when we came on the set and we had a scene, it was wonderful. 'I'm going to meet this man again, and we have these lines, and we're going to do it together.' Because you are acting on your feelings, and if I *was* this woman, what would I feel now? If this man who is like that suddenly is turning his back on you and is crude to you and doesn't care and doesn't listen to you -- at the moment the camera went, he was like that -- it's shattering. It's shattering. I don't even have to think about how I'm going to act. This wonderful man whom I just was embracing and having fun with, he is like this for me, and it just awoke feelings within me."

Yesss, you took words from my mouth. I guess it has to do with that nord germanic "race" she comes from, although, ofcourse, I deeply believe that it's wrong to make general value of people by the biological type they belong to, as they were piggs or horces. So, that's just about her physical look and atraction.
