I do this "deconstruction" process with old journals and jewelry that no longer feel like "keepers." The journals are a bit of a controversy because my family claims they might want to read them later, but for me, they're not at all meant to be read by others, and destroying them is a kind of renewal ritual or a letting go of the past ritual. With the jewelry pieces, if I'm tired of it, it no longer speaks to me, whatever, it makes good sense to re-imagine the components into something that suits who I am NOW. So I can 100% understand and get behind doing this with miniature projects as well. It's actually a great idea. Nothing can take away what you learned doing the project and the enjoyment you derived from it while making it. But if it no longer sparks joy, repurposing it is a great way to part with what doesn't work while opening the door to something new. I really enjoyed this video!

Sometimes letting go and deconstruction shows how much you have grown from all the different past projects. We have been told from a young age, get rid of the old to let in the new. Sometimes it's a really hard pill to swallow but it's definitely worth it in the end. Awesome video Ara ❤

I really needed to hear that about the journal part. Two years ago I threw away most of my old journals and really needed that, but I heard from most people around me that it would have been better if I kept them. And sometimes I think that too, but looking at the larger picture it was exactly what I had to do back then, for freeing myself and in order to move forward.
@BentleyHouseMinis
@BentleyHouseMinis 9 күн бұрын
I love hearing this! Yes, it can apply in so many ways. Freeing yourself from keeping anything that you feel like you are ready to move on from is great. And if they can be reused to make something new, that's even better!

Firstly, when I’m asked where I display my projects, I always say that it’s not the display, it’s the process that is so fun. I routinely steal from old room boxes that I have already enjoyed for a while , completely without regrets. I just don’t have the space.

A literal spring cleaning video. I definitely get where you're coming from, wanting to reuse projects that maybe didn't grow too dearly to your heart. But nevertheless, it seems so hard to "let go". As soon as you mentioned maybe wanting to do something with the two spiders together, I instantly thought of a scene where the two spiders have a little afternoon get-together "stitch + snitch", knitting or crocheting away on their spiderwebs! I think that would be so fun.

I like to sew. Last year I did a huge clean of my sewing space including letting go of several unfinished projects. As a crafter, I think the "I'll get to it some day" mindset is really hard to over come. But it's okay to... Just not.... ❤❤❤ And that's surprisingly nice to your mental state because you no longer have this project looming over you.

This video is THE SIGN that dismantling an unfinished project that I’m not happy with is the right choice. My dismantling will, however, require a hammer! 🤣 I haven’t touched the project in so many years, my skills & interests have grown, so even if I did want to pursue the same subject matter, I would do it a different way, more skilled, & polished. But it’s so hard destroying something that took so much time. Ok, more that I dread how hard it’s going to be to take apart!

Just a suggestion. With the backdrop wall you made, what if you put baseboard molding but don't put it against the wall. Leave just enough space so your changing wall paper slides in the slot. It would keep the paper from floating forward and give a more finished appearance.

I really like how you reduced that very large display to just the one stove and kept that. THAT is how you do it. I went from a 3br house I inherited on old family land with multiple large barns stuffed with 125+ years of family things, to a 300sf cabin and a 20' shipping container storage. I don't regret any of it because I did a lot of reducing large things to the smallest iteration, like you did, then sat with it for a while, then got rid of more. It works really well.

Try heating with a heat tool or use a hair dryer to soften the paint and glue, you may be able to remove the pieces easier. For future projects I would use the tacky wax / museum wax to tack items down but are removeable later.

The stove you are keeping would look cool with a vinyl floor. My grandma had one in her kitchen, that was so worn, you could see the tar paper underneath. She must have that over forty years by the time I was born in 51. I would add a chihuahua basking by the warm stove. A very worn wood floor would be fun.

Love what you've done in this video❣️❣️ I had the reverse problem where I had multiple individual items that didn't have a "room" or scene to go into?? With the association I belong to celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, all members were gifted a corner structure - literally 2 walls and a base - to be decorated as one wished. I bought a few more of these and so far I have done a steampunk scene, a crazy Alice in Wonderland tea party table and am now working on a log cabin scene using my pot-belly stove made from coffee pods as my central piece!! These corners have really inspired me and I'm having such fun with these smaller sized 1:12th projects!! 😃🤩

I loved seeing the process to pull things apart. It helped me appreciate how well made things can be. I also really appreciate you modelling the freedom from being forced to keep something one way just because you put time and effort into it. I didn't know I needed to see that. May I suggest adding a base board to your photo backdrop? Leave it unattached from the wall and you'll be able to slide whichever paper works best between the baseboard and the wall, giving a clean line that evokes a finished room.

26:00 I'm going through that with a project I've been slowly working on. It's a life sized Dragonair, a blue snake pokemon, that is 14 feet long. I have the main body fabric and the sheen and color were perfect (cause I dyed the fabric). However, it has gotten so damaged just in the making. I got super glue on one area, the sewing pins are pulling threads and it's very obvious, it doesn't stretch at all, the original pattern I made for the head was not working and made giant holes I was trying to patch. Overall, not working. I finally caved and new fabric samples are on their way. I'll likely need to dye it again which thankfully I used one of the rit dye color combos so I can see how much more fabric dye I need. I have a feeling that by the end, the fabric wouldn't be able to hold up against the weight of itself. A lot of the infrastructure is there so it'll be easier to catch up, but it still sucks

I can vividly remember you making both of these projects. Loved the Bake-off one, and you re-purposing the base as a photo-booth is perfect. Do love how you and I think differently though; I would have taken my small hand sander to sand down those dough splashes. Plus the messy stove is my fave, clean stoves just scream for some dirty-upping. As I never had much space to keep any project, anything not made specifically for another would be dismantled and repurposed in other projects. Maybe now that I have the room I'll start keeping projects. At least some. :}

Great video!❣️ I work in 1/6 scale. Storage space is always an issue for me. I end up making separate walls and floors that I have to put together in a light box to create a room scene. I guess you could say that all of mine are deconstructed. I think it's a really great idea to repurpose things that don't bring you joy. I did that once with a sofa.

"My two LITTLE spiders." You folks from Texas are a caution! I despise my projects when I'm done with them. I've completed literally dozens of projects and no longer have a single one. Didn't even take a picture of most of them. I'm sure its a sign of a huge flaw in my character! LOL! Fun video, Thanks!

Terribly nosey question I know, but what do you do with them? I have a couple of quilter friends who dislike looking at their finished projects so much they won't even give them to people they know.

You must be a true "enjoy the journey" artist then lol!! I understand that a little bit when it comes to my videos. I have a hard time rewatching some of them, especially the really old ones. I see all the ways I would do it different now😄

@@cmcoy5982 I worked mostly for commission for many years so there was always a customer. I have 7 grand kids. I've got a few projects in museums, and one displayed at a bank. I used to have a small shop in the back of a local hobby shop where I taught classes so I gave away anything that caught somebodies eye. I always had display areas but that was always for students mostly.

This was amazing. I like the techniques and care you use to remove elements of a project. I'm actually excited to start de-constructing one of my projects that no longer gives me joy. I need to get a new huge project assembled to a point where I can set it up on its stand before I'll have enough room to deconstruct the other one which is almost as big. Project tetris! LOL Thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope this has helped others as much as it's helped me!

I feel you on the project tetris lol!! I am so glad you are feeling ready to move and and reuse pieces that you enjoyed making at the time. Keeping the studio a fun, creative and inspiring place can often mean removing projects that just don't fit us anymore!! I am excited to see your work on the new upcoming house!!

You are so much fun to watch. I'm planning on redoing my miniature living room. It was done over 2 years ago and at that time I wasn't really planning on continuing the miniature route, so it's not to scale. All my other rooms are to scale so the living room looks odd on my Kallax unit where all my rooms are displayed.

One of my first projects was a spooky garden I did fore some month long challenge. I put it into an ols scrawlr-box and some things were 3D and others painted on thick paper and glued in. But it needed way too much space, so I bought a shadow-box/frame to put everything in. As I had been working with woodglue mostly it was quite a challenge to take it apart 😅. In the end everything fit into the frame and it’s way easier to display. 😊

I love that!! Shadow boxes are another great direction to go because they can hang on the wall and take up less space!

I'm a phase now where I am stuck mulling-over moving forward with my current project or starting a new one to wash it off because the current no longer sits well, at least on my point of view. Its just not it for me everytime I look at it for a week or two now then I saw this. I guess I need to face it, review and decide to go for it or take the best parts for a different project. This video is timely and I appreciate it, Ara. 😊

I am so glad this video helped you think through a dilemma with your own project! It can be so hard to make that decision, especially after so much time has already gone into it. However that time was not wasted as you most likely learned so much during that time, and that knowledge is valuable!

I’m getting a whole dollhouse that needs to be given love, but it has a complicated back story, and it’s Victorian-cute. Not my fav. So I’m going to repurpose everything I can and turn it into a house or horrors. With my current house, I questioned keeping everything I knew I wouldn’t use, but now I know there’s a future project that will use it all up.

My latest project has been inspired by mythology, and when I was thinking about what you could do with the spider project now, I thought it would be really interesting for it to perhaps be the residence of a Harpy. The fact that they are described as having ugly old women's faces could make a point about her having a vanity table. And using real feathers would give the realism to fit in with the background. An alternative could be something like Medusa, especially with the Danger warning. I'm excited to see what you do with the project 😊

I was just talking with someone recently about doing a Medusa project and that just sounds so fun! I would have to read more about harpy's as I don't know much about them. I guess medusa would have to be stone though lol!
