I'm a bankruptcy paralegal and can't find a client to save my life. This isn't as easy as some make it out to be.

It isn't easy at all. Owning, running, and marketing a business never is. It's a labor of love lol. Having said that, MY PREDICTION is that holy cow ..... those attorneys are going to come knocking once the courthouses re-open and life goes back to somewhat normal. I have a feeling that certain areas of law are going to explode in the coming months - like family law, bankruptcy, FDCPA, TCPA, nursing home neglect, and so many more. Hang in there!

I'd like to start a side business doing some sort of Paralegal work, being I can't do it full time right now because I'm currently in the military and my military position is the furthest thing from legal work. Though I have a full associate's degree in Paralegal studies and with it, I want to gain more experience in the Paralegal field while I'm in the military that way once I get out I'll be able to try to use my experience to aim for something more full time.

I have a question ... As a paralegal, I know we can work on a freelance basis with attorneys & firms but can we work with individual clients? I've been doing this type of work now for many years and often get referred by my clients to other people who are seeking assistance but I always turn them down because I am under the assumption that paralegals MUST work under an attorney's guidance. What are your thoughts? As a freelance paralegal, can I take on individual clients from the general public?

It depends on your state, but most Paralegals are required to work under the strict supervision of an attorney. Simply, you are not licensed to practice law. There are some states that license Paralegals to assist consumers with legal issues such as uncontested divorces, evictions, debt, etc. If you're in one of those states, you can look into it. James Hernandez: I just retired after working in a court system for 30 years, so I obviously have full knowledge of some areas of the law. My state has standard forms for many civil filings, and my understanding is that I (acting as a paralegal) can assist pro se filants in completing standard forms, but I cannot go any further than that, which would constitute giving legal advice. Specifically, I would not be able to help anyone draft any petitions or pleadings that are not standard forms.

I want to know how to create packages as a Paralegal. ATM I only offer “Discovery Packages” for everything that falls under Disc. However everything else I charge an hourly rate and I want to do as a retainer or package but don’t know what to include in another package.

Other packages you could consider are Settlement Packages (for creating Settlement Demands and tracking lien negotiations), or you could offer Mediation Packages wherein you provide formatting assistance for the mediation statement, assist in providing any presentation materials such as a PowerPoint, and even assist during the Mediation.
